Chambers: Now's the Time to Back the Gaffer
Friday, 12th Apr 2013 06:00

Town defender Luke Chambers has called for club owner Marcus Evans to back Mick McCarthy in readiness for an anticipated promotion push next season.

Chambers, 27, wants nothing more than for Ipswich to retain their Championship status over the current campaign’s remaining five games and then to put the Premier League firmly in their sights next time around.

Certainly, if Town can stay up and start the new season the way they have fared since McCarthy took charge back in November the future could be very bright indeed.

Chambers said: “Since the gaffer has come in we don’t fear anyone. If the league started then we’d be something like fourth in the table. It’s a very, very big positive for us to get ourselves over that finishing line this season and look forward to next season.

“If the owner is going to back the gaffer now is the right time because the proof’s in the pudding with our results. From my experience there are not many better than Mick McCarthy and he’s been fantastic for every single player since the day he arrived.

“With the run we have been on since he took over there is plenty of cause for optimism next season. If we can keep the majority of the squad we have now, and add one or two, I don’t see why things will be any different next season to how they’ve been recently.”

Like so many of his team-mates Chambers, signed last summer by Paul Jewell after the expiry of his Nottingham Forest contract, has revelled under the management of McCarthy.

The defender added: “He’s definitely up there with the best I have worked under. Everyone the gaffer has brought in, even those who were not playing before he arrived, they have all performed.

“Whoever he has signed on loan he has come in and performed. We’ve been fortunate that everyone, for some reason, has turned their personal performances around and week in, week out, they are performing as sevens or eights out of ten.”

MickMac and T.C have certainly got the boys on a roll, and long may it continue. Also, Luke Chambers has to be one of P.J's better ideas.

Be careful Luke for at the moment you my son are the weakest link in the Town defence

If we had someone who found the back of the net ie a DJ Campbell type person think we would have been looking at play offs.

Just hope we sign some of these loan players so we don't need a summer re build just a few new faces to give us that push

Kesgrave your prob right about him being the weak link but that just goes to show just how well everyone else is doing

I think mcgoldrick and Taylor could be a good front pairing for wordsworths creativity.

I certainly like what ive seen of LC since his arrival. #Chambersfistpump along with other little things give me the impression he is committed, and when he does interviews i think that comes across there too.

Also Bedsitfc id completely forgotten weve got Taylor to come back. Maybe he can be the answer to our goal scoring rate? What i saw of him before his injury certainly suggested he has the ability!

Top man is Chambo and liked him and his attitude from the frist time I saw him in a Town shirt at Colchester. He had a wobbly start but has got better and better as the season has wore on. Forest fans told us we were welcome to him well thanks Forest because we do welcome him.

Think we should do everything in our power to sign Stearman, he's been integral to our good form and he can play centre back so hes two for the price of one.
I'd like to see us get a number 1 goalkeeper, two wingers and a good striker and then we'll mean business.

If Stearman stays it would be nice to see Hewitt tried out on the wing in place of Edwards. Didn't see him play in his last game just listened on the radio, but once he got going & found his feet, it sounded like every pass or cross he made found it's target, which in turn seemed to lift the tempo of his team mates, a refreshing change I guess to working with wide men who have a poor end product!
With Hyam now being encouraged to go forward he will start adding goals to his defensive qualitys & hopefully Wordsworth will prove good enough to fill the other central midfield slot adding a few more goals to the team. On the left, if still at liberty, could Taylor fill that void? he has the quality to worry defenses & again add a few goals to the pot, I don't think his history suggests his goals tally is enough to be one of the main strikers, who should be looking to bag twenty a season in a successful Championship side.
If Mcgoldrick & Nouble don't quite make the grade on their own ( none of the other strikers at the club will, however much you wish it!), then all that's needed to spend money on is two twenty goals a season men up front.
Ps Thats not Dj if you take away his penalty's he's not a twenty a season man.
Is there anyone in the lower divisions banging in 30 or more , who struggling to cope with the step up might only manage 20!!!!!!

I've said it quite a few times - our strikers aren't the main reason why we struggle scoring; it's the service they get- Scotland popping goals away wasn't necessarily because he got better at Barnsley but because the type if service he gets is stronger. As much as I have a hard time around Chopra I feel SOME of the reasons he has a wayward goal tally is down to service again. McGoldrick did well because most goals were scrapped out and moving the ball into position himself- Gould we get some set peice and good crossing wingers, keep Stearman or someone as good as him; we've a fantastic team and season ahead of us next year

To be fair to Scotland he wasn't given any service here because he wasn't in the team this season, so wasn't given a chance to score any and at Barnsley his predatory instincts rather than the service got him results there. Although the service to the strikers here has been less than you would hope for, none of the remaining strikers has shown those predatory qualities to create something out of nothing or to put away a half chance, which a good striker will do even in a struggling side. ie; young Jordon at Blackburn.

Its the service why we don't score goals and width and pace with crosses coming into box. lots of goals are scored from crosses but we don't have the players to do this.

Cant agree Kesgrave, i think Chambers and Smith have been the rock on which the solid performances have been built on.
These two have the potential to be our centre back partners for some time to come.
