Chopra: I Don't Have to Leave
Monday, 6th May 2013 10:49

Striker Michael Chopra says it’ll be down to him whether he leaves Town this summer, having been told that the Blues will listen to offers for him along with team-mate Jay Emmanuel-Thomas.

Chopra tweeted: “Just coz I'm on the transfer list does not mean I have to leave. I have one year left on my contract it’s down to the player if he wants to go or not.”

The 29-year-old, who joined the Blues from Cardiff for £1 million in the summer of 2011, was the subject of loan offers from Hull City and other clubs in January but manager Mick McCarthy was unwilling to allow him to move on at that time.

Ex-Arsenal man Emmanuel-Thomas, 22, also has a year left on his Town contract.

As in the other post I think MM has earned the right to makes these calls and build his own team.

It makes sense to cash in if we can with a year left to go. They have had long enough to have made an impact and neither of them have done quite enough to earn a first team place so I can understand, no room for passengers anymore.

Both players have plenty of ability but don't fit in Mick's vision.

..... an important 'crossroads' few months ahead for Mr Chopra - only he can decide which turning he now takes in terms of his career.

I thought Chopra was the 20 goal a season striker who would get us in the play offs i didn't realise he would come with so much baggage but Clegg should have. I can't see him going anywhere , what with his wages, his money problems and his recent goal tally who would want him.
QPR maybe.

.... there's people who will be interested in him because of his name and past success (not recent!) - in the hope that some can be rekindled - baggage though, as we all know, can be expensive ......

This is no surprise from a player with no principles. Every time he has played the effort has been far short of what was expected. We'll never sell him, who would want that? Everyone feels the same on this forum, and I feel very angry that he has no intention of doing anything other than sit on his arse and take the money. What MM needs to do is give him the worst possible position at PR, so bad that he'll want to go. Piece of S*"t.

Why can't under performers get fired? If I performed as half assed in my job as Chopra does, I would have been shown the door a long time ago. He now gets to sit on the bench for 18K a week and do bugger all. How is that right? They harp on about Financial Fair Play Regulations and yet money is wasted on a striker who can't score. Sounds like the dammed government. That 18K a week could be used to pick up some hungry up and comer who knows where the goal is.

And I swear, every time I read one of his Twitter posts I lose an IQ point.

Chopra also had a session in California training camp last summer ?? which must have cost a few quid??? so he could be fit and sharp for the new season,, that worked out well HEY ??????

At the start of the season all our goals were going to come via Chops & JET and neither has delivered. I agree JET seems a nice guy and with the right help will make a decent player but Chopra is just out for himself, remember it took an on loan striker to turn things around for us. MM has proved himself as being able to get the best from our players we must trust him to start building his own team now and root out the dead wood.

I was excited when we signed Chops as he is a proven goalscorer however the fire in his belly appears to have been extinguished. It wouldn't surprise me if ITFC ended up paying him off as with greedy Bullard as I can't see any team taking this massive gamble (no pun intended).
His target for the season was 30 goals , I think it could take him 5 seasons to get there. His body language appears wrong when he comes on from the bench , it's a pity it didn't work out for him and the club... close the door on the way out

Chopra could be the answer to one of our problems.
Now that Cleggy has gone who will paint the turnstiles ?
Step up MC !

At long last the "proven goal scorer at this level" brigade have finally gone quiet. Show me one stat to back up that bit of nonsense. Chopra won't be attracting anything other than Div 1 clubs and I predict we'll end up paying up his contract.

The club has a lot to help you with all your troubles off pitch. Maybe you should be more gracious and do whats best for the club.

He apparently said on twitter when a fan goaded him that he wasnt even in the squad on Saturday "still got paid".

I was one of the idiots who said he is a quality player and I'm man enough to admit I got it wrong, sometimes you realise some of these footballers really are complete cocks!

Get rid, sooner the better, he's finished in football and will be one of those losers proping up a bookies for the rest of this life.

Like JET, another player that has had ample opportunity to get his head down and prove his worth but the his performances have been underwhelming and his goal return is nowhere near good enough for a player of his stature.

You have to wonder how many teams will be after his signature given his dire scoring record, poor attitude and off-field problems. Reserves it is then.

Let's be honest here, he was past his best when we signed him, he had a reasonable 11/12 season I believe scoring 10 or 12 Championship goals but his off the field problems as well as the on field one's this season has been his downfall, not a shadow of the player he was when he was in the Premiership. Only one slight aspect going in his favour which is debatable and that is the service into him this season hasn't been that great.
Correct decision.

Chopra has just been honest enough (or stupid enough) to say what most players in his situation think. Let's not be hypocritical: how many of us would walk away from a pot of money for doing very little? JET has said the right things but he is probably on high wages himself, knows that it will be difficult to find a club willing to take a chance on him, and is probably also preparing for a season warming the bench.

Let's be honest, we all know both of them probably have the talent to do well in the Championship but both are coming into their third year and have been a total disappointment. I think it's unlikely to happen for them at Portman road so let them go. They're probably on decent money. Let them go and waste another club's money. Chopra could have been a star but for his problems, and JET possibly still could be, but my money's on them both disappearing into oblivion. They lack the necessary mental approach. ITFC need to spend the money on actual rather than potential.

Chopra has been dreadful this season. Can anyone remember his target of scoring 20 goals this season!
Let him tweet whatever he wants. Lets get shot of him. What does he offer itfc?
I'm so glad MM has made this decision. As a professional player he is a disgrace.

north_stand77 added 22:53 - May 6
What a fool. He obviously has no sense of decency. To tweet such a comment must be a kick in the teeth for the club and fans who have largely supported him.

If he's happy to collect his pay for another year without earning it, I think the club should hold off paying him his wages until his loan is paid off.
Very disappointing attitude

nobbyclark added 22:56 - May 6
Did ITFC bail him out for 250k for his debts?

Just freeze his wages until the debt has been paid off.

He is a total prick. End of story.

Perhaps we should just see the chopra/JET situation as a commercial decision when faced with FFP and Football starting to get its act together. This is a potential opportunity to raise some money on two players who still have a year left and have things to offer but also to reduce our wage bill. I think us having to sell will be come a regular feature of the finances going forward especially as ME only ever appears to loan the club money (which ends up getting added to the vast total debt).

However, the only difficulty here is that unless one of the bigger clubs either with parachute payments or going up into the premiership wants them and stumps up then they are still likely to be here well into next season that is of course unless we decide to pay up their contracts. Perhaps a season long loan for both with us possibly paying some of their wages will end up being the best scenario.

Chops is obviously not the brightest of sparks, putting his off the field baggage to one side (which came with him from Cardiff) as a footballer he is still one of the best finishers around at this level. Last year he was played up top on his own most of the time which was a difficult ask for somebody his height and who isn't a target man. I am not sure I would ever criticise him for lack of effort, some frustrations clearly there to see when things not going quite right for him or getting the right service which has been woefully lacking.

Chops is a sad story, it is now time for this club to start signing players with the right character - with that thought in mind and moving on to others at the club, whilst people should be innocent until proven guilty any player in my view who is proven guilty of a criminal charge brings the name of the club into disrepute and should have their contracts immediately cancelled. Not sure many will agree with me on this especially if we paid a lot for such a player and they show great talent?
