TWTD understands that former loanee Reece Brown could join Town’s legion of summer Bosman signings following his recent release by Manchester United.

Other clubs, including League Two Bristol Rovers, are believed to have offered terms to the centre-half, who is the younger brother of former England international Wes, but the 6ft 2in tall Mancunian looks set to opt for a return to Portman Road when his Red Devils contract is up at the end of the month.

The 21-year-old joined the Blues on loan in February and subsequently made one sub appearance for the first team, in addition to featuring regularly for the U21s.

England U20 international Brown previously had spells on loan at Bradford, Doncaster, Oldham and Coventry, and has also played as a holding midfielder and at full-back.

Adding strength in depth at the back would appear to be one of Mick McCarthy's priorities ahead of the start of the season with the squad short of cover at centre-half and at right-back since the departure of loanees Brown, Patrick Kisnorbo and Richard Stearman at the end of the last campaign.

Meanwhile, former Town defender Pim Balkestein has joined VVV-Venlo back in his native Holland on a three-year deal having been released by AFC Wimbledon at the end of the season.

However, he has the right footballing background/education, last season will have been in effect a three month job interview and he is versatile across defence and midfield where we could do with reinforcement. I am concerned that none of our own youngsters seem ready to move up a step. I don't think that Mr McCarthy will be signing him as back-up; if he signs him then it will be because he thinks he can compete for a regular place in the team.

MathieandMarshall added 12:09 - Jun 14 BlueNote, Lee Martin is hardly a terrible player! the issue is the fee we paid for him and the fact he was a high earner (and didn't quite justify it) If we'd snapped him up from United on a free (as we are with Brown) and on low wages I don't think anyone would have complained about the return we got from him.

BlueNote added 00:34 - Jun 15 I never said Martin was terrible, but he was sh1te. Scored 6 and sent off 3. The man who bought him realised his mistake and put him on the transfer list, but Jewell prolonged our suffering. He's League One (div 3) at best. One of the worst Town players ever.

theobald1985 added 19:05 - Jun 15 martin was never played in his correct position yet still first choice for mick throughout are revival. treated appalingly by keane but did very well at charlton and has been good under mcarthy where he was limited in freedom going forward and always puts a shift in. mcarthy obviosly rated him or he would not have offered a deal at all! are u suggesting mcarthy does not know what he is doing? im glad he is running the club and not u bluenote. to suggest one of the worst players ever exposes you as one of those ever negative fans players really could do without
