|An enviable position to be in|
at 08:21 16 May 2021
I have often thought , the only way of turning itfc around would be to replace the entire squad.
Two things always prevented from this from being feasible , one was having the funds to afford it and the other was having a manager we could trust to undertake it.
Here we are in may 2021 and both of those conditions have slotted quite comfortably into place within weeks of each other , followed inexorably by another league one failure .
Now seems the time to throw down the title deeds and sweep our blue sleeves across the monopoly board .
Putting virtually every Town player up for transfer may seem drastic, but if we really are to start again. There is a case to be made for an entirely fresh start .
Some of the names being flagged up as possible arrivals already on social media will be pure conjecture. While there may be suitors for more than one of our "failures" , Dozzell and Jackson, just 2 examples.
We do have an distinct advantage this time ( as opposed to Hurst's major rejig) , in that Cook has done this sort of garage sale in the past and has emerged with successful teams.
I suspect from those rumoured to date , the championship players linked, may well be nearer the mark we are aiming at , than lower league punts.
One thing is for sure, the jigsaw needs to fit with no missing pieces.

So what can we look forward to in the next 3 months ?
A period many Town fans have been anticipating with some relish , particularly since our play off hopes morphed into goalless despair.
I think a strong indication of the type of players Cook will recruit comes from his preferred formation , which although he has deviated from on occasions since he was appointed , he now insists this will not be the case going forward.
He will be looking at an incoming goalkeeper I would have thought. Although Cornell has certainly laid a claim to back up at least.
Of the back four , I would say a fit KVY is a certain starter at right back, with perhaps Donacien returning as back up.
Left back this season has seen some decent displays from kenlock and i think he will also remain , but with a new arrival who will probably be the first choice.
Central defence is less clear, Chambers will very likely be gone, McGuiness too. Which leaves wolfenden , nsiala and wilson , and out of those Wolfy has been the one regularly used over the last month. Out of the other two, maybe one will be leaving and at least one CB signing will be arriving.
Two central midfielders is an interesting pairing. I don't think Cook is happy with Dozzell and Downes, and even if Downes keeps his role, I think there will most certainly be someone new alongside him , there may well be two new faces here to increase his options.
Of the 3 playing behind a striker I think only Bishop stands any chance of getting a place come next season. I would guess with the lack of creativity this season we are likely to see this area as the main initial signings, anything upto 4 arrivals can be expected here.
Who out of the strikers will survive ? , I think the answer is not many. Norwood may find himself competing with 2 or 3 new goalscorers.
All in all ALOT of change is about to take place. Be ready for at least half a new team , maybe as many as 7 or 8 debuts on the first game back next season.

Several have already been made , according to Paul Cook's latest press update .
These mainly concern those players leaving the club next month. To be honest , I would be very surprised if he hadn't made his mind up about the entire first team squad by now, and even more shocked if any of them could do anything to change his mind in the remaining 3 games.
I am not going to second guess who will ultimately remain from the pool of 20 odd players he has selected in his brief time as manager. But I would be very surprised if any more than 8 of those survive the summer.
Bearing that in mind, I think most people can have a guess as to what positions will need to be filled, if not the actual names of those who will fill them.
They are; Goalkeeper ( at least one) , left back , central defender ( at least one) , 5 in midfield ( including at least 2 wide men) and at least 2 strikers. That's a minimum of 10 players , although it could be as many as 12.
It will mean if not a complete new team, then very close to it. Pre- season will be very important. A good start to the season won't be as vital as a strong finnish.
