Could an empty Portman road actually be helping us ?
at 07:27 17 Oct 2020

We have all seen and heard games where things are not going well and the frustration of supporters, transfers rapidly onto the pitch.
Very often this leads to a poor performance becoming even worse. It happens to every home performance up and down the country, so nothing unique to itfc in that respect.
But the form of certain players is there for all to see at the moment, I point to Edward's, Bishop , Chambers and Dozzell in particular. A certain freedom of constraints which have been all too evident in the past.
Early days still, but it will be interesting to see how or indeed if , this develops into a welcome boost of confidence throughout the team , and how it affects performances once crowds return.

How many clubs will survive ?
at 07:16 25 Sep 2020

The financial fallout of zero paying customers at league one and two grounds for, possibly the entire season , will be substantial.
I think it is reasonable to say , looking at some of the clubs concerned and their bank accounts, that as many as 10 from league one may not survive and possibly Upto 12 in league two. An enormous number of clubs to go the way of Bury and Macclesfield.
The question then is ; does the money which still overflows the pockets of premier league players get redirected to those in peril on the covid seas.
In my opinion , it's very unlikely, maybe the F.A. will take a stand and come to some arrangement , but in the past the lucrative t.v. millions have stayed with the elite and the greed and absurd wages are not going to be easily prized away from the premier league coffers.
What happens when clubs can no longer fulfill their fixtures is another story. In the case of Bury , each team just sat out that game, 4, or 5 teams leaving the league , will cause a much greater problem.
At the moment this doesn't seem like conjecture, but more like an inevitability, unless some sort of salvage package appears from government ( unlikely ) or the EFL ( even more unlikely ).

On the cusp of a new season
at 19:10 10 Sep 2020

A time for predictions, a time for renewed Hope and , after 6 long months , a time of eager anticipation.

Maybe those sentiments apply in varying degrees to Ipswich Town. Yet Paul Lambert leads us into another season with a determined formation decision and , presumably a settled modus operandum for the rigours of a concertinared league one campaign.
The hope is, those constant line up changes , not to mention formation re- thinks are banished to the pre covid lockdown and we will grow into the 433 and have the players to utilise it.

The anticipation to a large extent lays with the younger members of the squad, in the absence of any headline signings. If the likes of Lankester and Drinnan can fulfill long held potential and steer injury free, both could be stars of Lamberts chosen tactics.

My prediction is the last of this pre season muse. And , being purely an opinion, is not expressed to pour scorn upon our prospects, yet I do not , nor ever have believed that 433 is a workable formation for the squad we have. Reason being, lack of strength in the middle of the park to dominate the play , and should we lose Flynn Downes, we really have no ball winner to supply a front 3 who are ( in the case of Norwood and Jackson at least) not well suited to this style of play, in my opinion.

My own prediction is that we will do best, playing 352 and my team would be; ( when all fit ) Holy, Woolfenden, Nsiala , Ndaba , Kvy, Huws , Bishop , Dozzell , Nydam , Lankester , Drinnan.
The manager would be anyone but Lambert.
Hope our luck changes soon, and we some how make this the season when things change.

433 and why it hasn't worked in the past
at 07:49 28 Aug 2020

Frankly I am astonished that Lambert wants to revisit this system, it is a round block he has been trying to hammer into a square hole for practically his entire tenure at Ipswich Town.
Firstly, the idea of having a central striker with two wide men, will only work, can only work with midfield backing up attacks, last season , the season before, whenever we have played this system, the striker has been isolated when we have managed to get crosses into the box and the stats speak for themselves, we have gone whole games with barely a shot at goal.
The central midfield have very often played attractive tippy tappy stuff in the middle third , but have rarely managed to connect with either the wide men or the central striker.
The main problem has been ( and still is ) playing the ball out of defence. Retaining pocession is one thing. But the nervousness this causes both among the players and the watching supporters is there for all to see. How many times did we lose points last season due to errors in front of our own penalty area ?
And now it seems the best Lambert can do is more of the same. There are a dozen different options available to him , without instigating too much thinking.
I don't have to predict this formation will not work. We all know already that it doesn't.
