New year.. old problem
at 06:41 30 Dec 2023

We have been in a similar position under Marcus Evans stewardship.
Near the top of the championship going into the new year, needing new blood to sustain a challenge.
On that occasion we recieved nothing from Evans to help us maintain a challenge.
I think we will see significant signings this January. But will it be enough to hold our position in the top 2 ?
Personally , looking at that performance last night against QPR , I think it is highly unlikely we can afford or remain in FFP rules to strengthen this squad enough to gain automatic promotion.
If McKenna does achieve it with the 3 or 4 we will get through the door next month , It would be possibly the greatest achievement any manager has performed at the club.

International call ups
at 11:07 23 Dec 2023

No. As I am sure I just stated , Leeds have no one going to international competition , so it affect us more than them.

International call ups

No. My mistake, I thought they had a couple of internationals from Africa countries. They aren't losing anyone as it stands. But if we beat them today, it won't matter anyway.

International call ups
at 08:03 23 Dec 2023

Are going to affect championship clubs in January/ February.
As it stands ( with no call up for Morsy) I think we can handle losing a couple of players, albeit in the same position of CB.
Both Leicester and Leeds have far bigger problems.
In my opinion we would be looking to strengthen at the back, even without losing Burgess and Baggott, I do think this might test McKenna the most, centre backs are not easily prized away from clubs in January, particularly good ones.
Another forward is the other must have, so if its £3 million we have lined up for two players , hopefully we can find what we need.

Dividing the season into blocks
at 06:11 25 Nov 2023

Which are separated by the international breaks , gives everyone the opportunity to chart our progress this season.
Using those measures, I would now see the first block as very much a measure of what we are capable of achieving in this league and can be seen as a resounding success. Not only did we maintain our form , in many games we improved it.
The second block then commenced with the team exceeding expectations and the big question was could we sustain that sort of form and those results . After a bit of a false start with the postponement of the Rotherham game meaning we had gone well over 2 weeks without a competitive game , we all know they more than sustained a challenge in this league, all be it , with some frailty appearing in our defence in the last two or three games.
We now head into a third block of games which will run through until the new year and round three of the F.A. cup.
This section will be the most difficult for us and may well be the block which defines our season. Up untill now, we have lost one league game, I don't think it is too outrageous to suggest we will lose more than one game between now and New year.
How many will we lose ?
That is the question which will define our season.
. And how we deal with those setbacks. Personally I believe if we can get to january and still be sitting in the top 2 , we have achieved a remarkable feat and something which will stand us in good stead for the remainder of the season. There are some incredibly difficult games coming up, many of them on tv. Let's enjoy them with the full knowledge that for the club as a whole , things have only got better. Much better than those dark days in league one.

Win , lose or draw today...
at 08:21 11 Nov 2023

We are in dreamland , we really are.
Yes , I can understand supporters getting caught up in the possibility of automatic promotion.
But rewind to the start of the season and many of us would have been happy to stay in this league and build from there. So to be where we are now is way beyond most people's expectations.
Having said all that , it would , of course now be very nice to stay in contention and go up at the first attempt, with the provision that this season is already a successful one no matter what happens over the Christmas fixture list.
In my opinion, our league position will be dependent upon getting our defending balance right and finding the best combination to achieve that.
At the moment we concede too many goals to sustain a challenge, but I do believe we can correct this , maybe not entirely from our current squad , but I'm sure a couple of extra additions in January can tilt things in our direction .
I am sure our owners will be willing to take a sizable punt if we remain in our current position.

It only makes us vulnerable if they don't do the right things when we haven't got the ball. Which is more or less what McKenna was saying after the game. If the players that we have continue to do that , we will have problems in my opinion.

Last seasons January window
at 06:18 29 Oct 2023

Concentrated on midfield and attacking players. This season it will be defenders.
No team can rely on a goalkeeper to keep making 3 or 4 blinding saves to keep them in the game. All 4 at the back yesterday seemed to be caught out at times by the Plymouth forwards, especially Whitaker , a strong and aggressive striker.
I don't know if Tuanzebe will be one answer to our defensive problems, but judging by Kieron McKenna after match interview , he is well aware of our weaknesses. At the moment we are producing the chances and goals to cover it up. That may not always be the case with the games to come, and definitely not if we go up.

If the rain in Rotherham
at 08:12 20 Oct 2023

I have relations in Sheffield , who inform me this morning that it has been raining most of the night but its "steady" rain not a deluge. I would have thought an inspection will be announced before 9am if its in any doubt.

Underwhelmed by the transfers
at 08:09 2 Sep 2023

You shouldn't be.
Both Hirst and Taylor are top line signings more than capable of standing out in this division.
Hutchinson already beginning to shine in cup ties and Scarlett will do the same and more as the season goes on, in my opinion.
This coupled with the fact that we could be in a position to add one or two more in January, gives us a good chance of at least top half , maybe better.

New arrivals next week ?
at 11:12 19 Aug 2023

I think the answer to that is almost certainly , yes.
The next question is who.
In my opinion it will be a striker , it may even be two strikers, with maybe one going the other way.
At least one of those may well be a loan signing , an up and coming youngster from the Premier league is my guess, maybe someone like Tom Canon from Everton. The other could be a permanent signing and someone who can fill in for several positions.
My prediction is, by this time next week , we will know a fair bit more.

New season. New league. New test
at 07:36 5 Aug 2023

Kieron McKenna takes the momentum he managed to generate in last seasons steamrollering of league one into the championship.
All town fans must be fascinated to see how they can perform throughout the coming season.
So far, the squad is pretty much the same as last season , Taylor from Peterborough , could prove very useful and will probably start against Sunderland , one to keep an eye on tomorrow. But the most significant signing in my opinion will be Hirst, who , along with Broadhead, really did make the difference when he arrived on loan last January.
Walton will be a big loss, no doubt about that. The defence were used to him coming for high balls and commanding his area. Hladky needs to perform at a similar level from day one to give us that same confidence at the back. I am 100% certain he will.
How good this squad really is , remains to be seen. But you do not totally obliterate so many teams in league one and then struggle in the division above . Certainly not while the team are still improving.
So plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the coming season. My prediction?
Somewhere between 6th and 10th

Momentum going into championship
at 06:31 7 May 2023

The club is only going one way now. Already various players being touted as itfc targets among them Sayki from crystal Palace and Bishop from Portsmouth.
I think the first priority should be Luongo and Hirst on permanent deals. We know both of those players work very well in our team .
I think we will sign Luongo, he seems happy here , has a very good pairing with Morsy and as long as he stays fit will be a huge asset in the championship.
If not Hirst , then who ?
I think Hirst should be our number one target , he is still young, fits our system extremely well and is good in the air.
IF he doesn't sign for whatever reason we will need at least one, probably two strikers. Bishop from Portsmouth looks a good goalscorer, but not sure he would fit as well as Hirst. Clarke -Harris is a proven prolific scorer, even Armstrong from Southampton has been mentioned, which if true, would certainly be an upgrade.
Interesting summer.

Don't look at our past record at Peterborough
at 06:38 22 Apr 2023

Look instead at Kieron Mckenna's record against them which is played one ,won one.
I really can't see it being anything other than played two won two after today.
So stop worrying everyone.

Momentum is a massive asset
at 07:45 9 Apr 2023

It is with us and we must keep it there
Of our rivals , I feel Plymouth still have a certain amount of the same momentum, they have overcome some major setbacks and still top the league as the only club who have won more games than we have.
Another major injury blow to Mumba may slow them down , but , in my opinion, they remain a worthy promotion candidate who have been there all season. Few would say they don't deserve to be there.
Sheffield are a different proposition , Darren Moore got them on a great run , they looked to be strolling away with first place a few weeks ago. But many Wednesday fans are not enamoured with their manager and never have been. The recent decline will be front and centre tomorrow and any slip ups against Accrington will be magnified incredibly by the home support, especially those who have never been supportive of the manager. It's an interesting one , but Accington Stanley are not the strongest away team in this league by a long way.
Barnsley, too looked to be charging up the table a few weeks ago , but have begun to falter now, a 6 point gap now looks alot more comfortable for us and providing we can maintain or increase that gap over the next 2 weeks, the postponed match may turn out to be not as big as the original fixture seemed to be.
We have potentially 2 difficult games in our remaining fixtures against Peterborough and Barnsley. Would we get away with losing those two ?
I think possibly , yes.
But only if we win all the others, which is a tall order , but the momentum is with us , we just need it to stay there for a.nother 2 weeks
