Tranmere Keeper Town Target
Thursday, 13th Jun 2013 19:27

Out-of-contract Tranmere keeper Owain Fon Williams looks set to be the man competing with Scott Loach for the Town number one jersey during 2013/14. The Blues are understood to have offered terms to the 26-year-old Welshman, who was previously linked with a move to Portman Road in 2009 and again in the summer of 2010.

Penygroes-born Williams started his career with Crewe but moved on to Stockport in 2008 without making a senior appearance.

It was while with the Hatters — during which time he had a short spell on loan at Bury - that he attracted Town’s interest.

In January 2011 6ft 4in tall Williams moved on to Rochdale where he remained until the following summer when he joined Tranmere.

Williams has been capped by Wales at U17, U19 and U21 levels and has been included in full squads but so far without making his debut.

Elsewhere, Wycombe Wanderers winger Joel Grant is also amongst the Blues’ summer targets, according to Chairboys sources. The 25-year-old, who scored 11 goals in 2012/13, is out of contract at the end of the month. Grant, who has been capped by Jamaica at U20 level, was previously with Watford, Aldershot and Crewe.

Released Blues midfielder Andy Drury is again linked with a move to his former loan club Crawley, who Town will http://www.twtd.co.uk/ipswich-town-news/23058/town-travel-to-crawley-in-pre-seas in pre-season.

Meanwhile, new midfielder Cole Skuse was at Portman Road today having agreed a three-year deal after opting to leave Bristol City at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old told the club site: “Straight away you can see that this is a huge club. Walking around the offices and you can see that the walls are decked with photographs showing the history of Ipswich Town and it’s great to be a part of the club now.

“I’ve had a look around the town and the stadium today and I’m looking forward to meeting the lads when we return for pre-season. I’m eager to get going with Ipswich now.”

Town start their pre-season programme on Monday 24th June, although players will be dropping into the club during the previous week to be assessed before they get to work for the campaign ahead.

Williams and Grant both have Crewe connections, can't be bad.
Grant has a decent enough scoring record too. Looks promising.

dont like the idea of Loach being first choice, and Williams wont change that.. Grant averaged one good game in five for the Choirboys.. his talent was kept quiet by aware opposition, who realised if you play him out of a game in the first 10 minutes, he throws his teddies.. if he grows out of that 'he will shine'

After Andygizmo's very sensible comments about Paul Lambert putting together a team of nobodies, perhaps we should also remind ourselves about a certain young manager called Alf Ramsey who did something similar.
There are some mighty good players in the lower divisions just waiting for their chance, and MM is the sort of person who would know how to exploit that market to the best advantage.
I wasn't aware that the scum up the road had suffered unduly from Lambert's transfer dealings.

I watch Wycombe about 10 times a year. Grant is decent for league two, but don't see him as anything else than backup at town. Having said that, he's fairly young and comes from a club built on youth development and passing football. So he must have potential! Won't cost much either, as there desperate for any kind of cash lately!

Joel Grant is fast and scores quite a lot for a winger, he would be a good signing in my opinion

Would be a pretty decent backup to Scott, and would push him to be no 1 too.

would be quite happy with this as a back up keeper. I think mick wanted somebody taller than ALB so this fella fits the bill.

I think scott loach has earned the right to be number 1 he was excellant when he came in and should start as number 1 come august

My son was a goalkeeper at Crewe Acadeny for 8 years while these two were there. Owain is a fantastic lad and a very decent keeper but I guess may be prone like most to a clanger. JG is a very good winger with very good feet ( very much a Zaha type player , loads of tricks) but like Zaha can be ineffective at times but both would be decent acquisitions on the budget we are obviously working with. Long gone ,it seems, are the days where we can consider even spending £1 million on a player so I guess we have to cut our cloth according to our weave.

On another note, what's the maximum penalty when pleading guilty to an ABH charge?
Big fine and community service or a little stretch?

keanish i dont know how much u can say on here but i cant think taylor will go down for abh on his first offence. u normally get fines and community sentence and a rehabilitation program like thinking skills for example.
if you kept doing it u would eventually get a suspended sentence which if breached would mean u go down
I sure he will be available at the start of the season at the very worst he might be wearing a fancy ankle bracelet

Made a lot of appearances for a reserve keeper? Anyway Loach was our reserve and Henderson will be third choice at Upton Park if he decides to stay. Does that make them bad keepers? I'll reserve judgement till I see him play if that's going to happen. Grant sounds interesting, there's loads of untapped talent out there, perhaps Mick's the man to unearth some gems.

I know absolutely nothing about him! However, we only have one keeper at the club, so would guess we will sign at least one more! Personally, I think we need a new No. 1.

It would be nice if we could still afford to buy a player instead of taking other clubs rejects, although perhaps one or two are Bosmans.
I am still hopeful that Mick will be allowed to spend a bit more than the £125000 he has so far; as these were the kind of sums being shelled out for players by Ipswich 30 years ago.
Mustn't forget though that less than a year ago the club were reported to have spent £1m + on Paul Taylor.
I just worry that Mick might get fed up with being kept on such a tight rein by the reportedly rich Mr Evans.

Gotta love the idiots on here. If MM rates him and signs him that is good enough for me. The rest of you who disagree suggest you go find another club to support.

WickedBlue - ...... as if this Club can afford to lose any more support, over and above what it already has over the last few seasons. WAKE UP.
