Edwards: Pressure's On After Two Defeats
Friday, 9th Aug 2013 12:24

The pressure is on for Town after their disappointing start to the new season, skipper Carlos Edwards admits on the eve of Millwall’s visit to Portman Road.

The Trinidad & Tobago international said: “I would say so. There is a bit of pressure on me — that’s how I look at it. I don’t want us to be starting the season with three defeats or even two defeats and a draw.

“The last thing we want is at this early stage of the season to be playing catch-up with the teams above us. We need to be biting at their heels so that any time they have a lapse we are right there to take advantage and it needs to start on Saturday.”

Despite last season’s lengthy battle to avoid the drop Edwards insists Town can enjoy a far more successful 2013/14 campaign and be among the leading contenders.

He added: “We have to think positively and make our mark. We have to put our feet on other teams’ throats and let them know how tough it is going to be to beat us.

“Look at when the gaffer took over in November last year and we went to places like Wolves and Bolton and won. Teams might have been thinking it would be an easy three points but we soon shut them up.

“Why we can’t do it again this season? It’s a tough league and it will be another challenging season but it’s not something we can’t do.”

Hopefully a great turnout tomorrow that will cheer on the lads too. We need good support tomorrow just to drive on the players to win the match, and our season will then be off and running. Can't actually wait until tomorrow! COYB

I think Town are paying the price for having less than strong opponents for those last 2 pre season friendlies. The to go straight into a game with a previous PL outfit . Hardly surprising the start we've had tbh. Very disapointed with the level of pre seaosn oppositions and said so back in July.

Hopefully a bumper crowd and a convincing victory to keep the non season ticket holders interested. Even a draw will be a disaster in my opinion but will no doubt be apologised for be those with no ambition who are happy to cheer us into div one. Considering we were the lowest scorers in the championship last season I think Mick needs to address this and for me the problems are all due to lack of creativity in midfield. None of our forwards are missing loads of open goals but the problems are all around a lack of creativity. We might have the 15 goal a season striker we need in McGoldrick but he needs better service (as did Chopra in fairness).

Hopefully the last two defeats will shock the players back in to gear. Would love to see town fly out of the traps Saturday and give us something to cheer about :) put them on the back foot boys!

"went to places like Wolves and won"? I think quite a lot of teams went to Wolves and won!

His comments re lee martin earlier today are absolutely stupid. Captains don't discuss such things or shouldn't.

A hard first away match and a irrelevant cup game. Season begins tomorrow, maybe a little nieve but I believe fair

Don't worry about the negatives blue feast, I got minus 8 on another topic. Obviously town fans are happy these days to have mindless idiots wear the townships. What with Carlos (I drove the car because...oh no that was a lie, I drove it because.......actually that was a le......) Norris (just phoning my friend), Chora......Taylor......N'Daw..........

We heard plenty of talk like this last season and didn't get us anywhere, we managed to avoid relegation and that was the highlight of the season.

2 games into this season following a dismal set of signings and some injuries and the captain is already having to make speeches about what a tough league we're in, how challenging it will be and that we are already at risk of falling behind the rest................how can any of this be positive?

Give me a break justspivvychops and the rest of the fickle "fans". You will get no credit for slating anyone - it DOES NOT make you more pragmatic or intelligent to seek to criticise. Some of the critics on here have a habit of claiming that those of us who get behind the team are merely showing Blind Faith and that the best way to show how much you love the club is to criticise. Why dont you just go to some other club and offer them your "support"?
"dismal set of signings"?? are you for real? Do you understand the financial rules we must work under? MM signed 10 players and spent only £150k. All of the players IMO are improvements on what we had last year and the previous couple of years. When you hear the Lee Martin was signed for £2.5m you realise the different times we are living in. Martin doesnt have a patch on most of the players that have come in this season.

Carlos has pressure on him because there are squad members who can take his place on the park. No argumnet there - but surely there is no big pressure on the whole team to win after only one league game that we were hardly thrashed in ???? GET REAL GUYS ..... we have had one (ONE) tough away league game and lost it to a poor decision and a deflected shot. Suddenly we are "under pressure" and "need a new keeper" .... very very fickle !!!

I've no idea whether we will finish top 6 or not after one game, but before you all down vote me, nor have you ! What I DO know is that the side/squad is AT LEAST AS GOOD as the one that Mick finished the season with - and we were 6th on form from when he took over. Leave me to ponder for a few matches before I start worrying.

This time last year I was still behind PJ - you have got to say that being behind MM at this stage feels a whole lot more secure and confident

Totally Agree RetroBlue, will take us until the International break now to get up to the Championship level! I honestly believe we have improved the squad but it didn't look like it against Stevenage on Tuesday and unfortunately most of our rivals in the Championship have also improved more than us. So with the Premiership relegated teams fairing better than they did last year, although I hope I am wrong, I think it could just be another mid-table end to the season for us.
