Town chairman David Sheepshanks has called for reforms to the Worthington Cup as well as advocating a two-week winter break for English football. Sheepshanks was speaking at the Football Expo trade fair in Cannes today.

Sheepshanks said that clubs from outside England should be allowed into the Worthington Cup: "This may be an opportunity to refresh the Worthington Cup format and invite Scottish or Irish clubs to participate, provided it carries the very important carrot still of a UEFA Cup spot for the winners. I am a great supporter of the Worthington Cup, but if there is some expansion of this sort it might capture the public imagination."

In addition he feels that a two-week winter break would allow top players a period of rest during busy season.

Sheepshanks is also in agreement with UEFA after they hinted that sides going out of the Champions' League may not in future get an automatic place in the UEFA Cup. Sheepshanks said he felt this devalued the competition which he says needs "clear brand identification."
