Hirst Hoping to Add to Scotland Caps

Striker George Hirst will hope to add to his international caps and goals later today when Scotland host Belarus in a World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park (KO 5pm, BBC2).

Hirst, 26, who has previously won five caps, scoring one international goal, was an unused sub as the Scots pulled off a Lazarus-like comeback to beat Greece 3-1 at Hampden on Thursday to maintain second place in the group, behind leaders Denmark on goal difference.

ArnieM added 19:50 - Oct 12 Hes not getting a look in at Scotland level is he..... Im a big Hirst fan, but agree he must start scoring goals more often. He's capable, but his first thought appears to be to play someone else in or lay it off, not look to goal first and foremost. .

GH is a bit of a puzzle. I've taken a look at his goal to appearances record, which makes interesting reading. if you look at his careeer at various youth levels for England ( yes England ), over a 3 year period he scored 17 times in 40 matches, very decent for sure. His senior league appearances tell a different story. Since 2016 up to today, 35 goals in 185 appearances.

I'm not entirely sure what that tells us, maybe a player who was really promising at youth level but hasn't kicked on for whatever reason or reasons? Of course there's more to his game then just sticking the ball in the back of the net, but I'd say he's developed more into a target man than a hit man.

Interestingly on a stats website that I use, where below all the usual stats on sites like that, they offer a useful summing up of a players more obvious strengths and weakenesses. GH has one weakness listed in that department, " Holding on to the ball ". Make of it all what you will. I see he was once again an unused substitute against Belarus.
