Walton: No One Wants to Be On the Bench
Sunday, 7th Dec 2025 14:42 by Kallum Brisset

Town goalkeeper Christian Walton hopes to have given manager Kieran McKenna a decision to make with number one Alex Palmer facing an imminent return to fitness.

Palmer played virtually every league game for the club from his arrival in February until he was forced to be withdrawn from the Blues’ home defeat to Charlton Athletic in October.

That came after he pulled up with a calf injury, but the former West Bromwich Albion keeper is approaching a return having missed the last seven weeks of football.

In his place, Walton has stepped up and started the last nine Championship matches, keeping his fourth clean sheet of the season and producing a number of excellent saves in Town’s 3-0 home victory over league-leaders Coventry City on Saturday.

Walton says his focus is solely on helping the team, and says the Blues’ busy run has been an ideal opportunity to return to the feeling of match action.

“Every player has to do that when they come into the team,” he said. “I’ve said it before, competition for places this year, last year and the year before has always been something at this club. I just want to do well for the team and do what I can.

“No one wants to be on the bench. I’ve spent a little bit of time on it here and there over the last couple of years, so it’s nice to be playing.

“It’s perfect for me, I’ve needed it. I’ve been fortunate that I’ve played a lot of games in the two months that I’ve been playing. It’s great for a goalie especially to play a lot of games and get into the rhythm of things. It’s been really nice and I'm really enjoying it.”

Town’s core principles under Kieran McKenna are clear, with the goalkeeper and defenders trusted to keep hold of possession and play through the press to forge attacks of their own.

Naturally, that style of play has pros and cons. While the Blues have been caught out on occasion in recent weeks, there have been examples of attacking success that have the goalkeeper at source.

Walton, who plays a key part at the base of the team, has played that way for long enough.

He said: “If you actually break the game down and watch it back, you see moments where we’ve built from the back, we get through the pitch and we’re winning a corner high up. It’s clear for everyone to see.

“If you’ve been coming to Portman Road for the last four years, you know that’s what we do as a team. When there’s new players, it takes a bit more time, but I still think there’s plenty of good stuff and a lot of success comes off the back of it.

“We just need to stick with it and enjoy the challenge of building up.”

Victory over high-flying Coventry was just what Town needed after a difficult week on the road where trips to Oxford United and Blackburn Rovers yielded just one point.

On some of the criticisms that have come their way, Walton said: “There’s always going to be after defeats, after draws when you should be winning, and after poor performances. That’s inevitable at any club.

“I don’t look too much into it. I don’t read it and I don’t listen to it. It can be difficult when the crowd are getting frustrated but it’s part of being a footballer.

“We would all have taken responsibility. When you have a lot of games, training can be difficult because you don’t have much time to train. Friday, Tuesday, the Tuesday before the Friday game is obviously tough to get your training in.

“But we have to make sure it’s at a really good level because it carries on into performances on a matchday. It’s a big thing for the manager that we’ve always had at this club is to train well, and it comes out in performance on a matchday.”

The Championship table makes for better viewing, with the Blues now into fourth in the table ahead of another home match against sixth-placed Stoke City on Wednesday.

“It’s good,” Walton added. “We try not to look at the table too much because it can change so quickly, but we’ll enjoy the evening tonight and go again on Wednesday.

“That’s the biggest thing. Another top team coming here that’s done well this season so we know the challenge is going to be tough, but we go into it with full belief.”

Don't know how many games Walton has played for us but the mistakes he has made you can probably count on one hand compare that to Muric and his were massive ones.

I’m not in a position to express an opinion because I am in a land far, far away and just watch/listen (note to PR sound engineers: I could barely hear the commentary against Coventry above the noise of the crowd), but I’ll just make the observation that I’ve noticed “we are aware of the crowd expressing its frustration and it just makes things more difficult for us” is a thread running through recent interviews from the manager down. How legitimate a complaint is this?

We are lucky to have Walton but I guess Palmer will end up back as first choice

Stick with Christian, he's never let us down. He would have established himself as our no.1 years ago if it wasn't for bad luck with injuries.

Both Palmer and Walton are amazing goalies but I think since Walton has come back in again he has really shown why he should be back as number one. He got really unlucky last time we were in the Championship after he got injured and then Vaz performed really well so it's great he gets to show what he can now do more at this level. Even in the opening game of the Premier League against Liverpool I think he put in a really good showing before being dropped for Muric. 4 clean sheets in 9 starts is something to really help his claim (and I feel like Walton commands the box a bit better)

How can you drop Christian when we’ve gone from the lower half of the table to 4th.

Two great keepers who have shown their worth this season already. I’d stick with Walton for sure, he’s earned his place and yesterday’s performance was outstanding. Linkboy13 comparing Walton to Muric, how about comparing him with Palmer instead of a keeper who is out on loan and will likely move on in Jan. Also Muric played in the premier league … he’s a good keeper doing his stuff abroad , fair play to him , stop hating.

I like Palmer but there's no way you take Walton out with the form he's been in. 3rd Round approaching, start Palmer and hope we go on a run so he gets a bit of game time.

Can’t see it’s a hard decision, there is no reason to drop Walton surely? One position we are unlikely to rotate is keeper unless a cup game. Walton was excellent yesterday.

Would be a big slap in the face for CW if he was replaced by AP now that he's virtually fit again. He waited his time, got his head down, never complained and just waited for a chance. Appropriately for a goalkeeper, he's taken it with both hands! In my opinion it's his jersey to lose now, the way it should be.

Linkboy, sorry but Muric had a 74.3% save rate last season against Waltons 51%. Muric may have had greater issues with his passing but let half as many GPK as CW.

That having been said, hes in good form now and in rhythm, so he should stay in the side. He had a superb game yesterday and he has the jersey. His saves yesterday were superb and CW in theright frame of mind is a real asset.

But FFS stop all this nonsense about Muric. I get it that the fans hated him, thats why the club let him go. But the stats don't lie, and our 2nd half season performance in terms of points per game last season was much lower, fact

Europa, you have bought up one of the big million dollar questions in football. Is it the supporters job to stay quiet if not satisfied or let their feelings known, or should they just support come what may? After paying a not inconsiderable amount to be entertained. Or is it the players job to supply the entertainment first?

If you pay to go to say, the theatre, or a lot of other live events, you don't expect to be the one to first supply the entertainment! I'm on the side of players supplying the entertainment, though nothing wrong with some encouragement or dissatisfaction from the crowd if things aren't going quite right. It would be interesting to know what other posters think.

My thioughts are that football is more than just entertainment, it is also engagement with the game and the players, more like going to a rock concert where the band feeds off the energy of the crowd.
Some of the away games I went to years ago In the Sir Bobby era, the home fans seemed louder when their team were struggling against us. I think that just as we need leaders on the field, the leaders in the stand have to recognise when the team needs help and start pushing up the positive noise level

For me Christian Walton is an excellent all round keeper
To win the golden club award twice says it all.
Very unlucky with the injury 2 years ago.
And since he replaced Palmer ( another good keeper) it is been noticed that we are better as a defensive unit

Should be our number one as he should of been last season

Seems odd now that the club did not turn to Christien before buying Palmer.he is a good loyal chap. Anyway we now seem to have two good goalies and I believe that CW deserves to keep his place but it is a precarious position being a goalkeeper.

Goalkeepers have a tough existence, often remembered for goals conceded or mistakes as they’re the last line of defence and benchwarmers often through no fault of their own. Walts is a consummate professional, never dropped his head and stuck at it. He deserves his chance and the jersey.

Well done Walts, the challenge is to keep the shirt and a challenge to Palmer to step up and try to win it back. A great position to be in.

I have very few gripes with McKenna but after Walts performance against Liverpool at the start of last season, I would have kept him in. Clearly McK was aspiring for something else, it didn’t work out and they probably knew something I didn’t (Walts might have been managing an injury or not delivering in training). Anyway, players fighting and earning the shirt is what we want to see and is what we have. COYB

Walton for me at number 1 everytime...some of the saves he's made recently have been world class...Palmer does seem to let a lot go past him.

The first game that Jack T started for ages in Mf was home v WBA. That also happened to be the first game CW started after Palms got injured. I don’t think it’s a coincidence. Jack has given us more bite in the first 60 Mins in the central area and CW has perhaps given us a bit more stability at the back. Although I assume Jack T in m/f would also have helped Palms.

Walton was our first key signing under K McK.
He was unlucky to loose his place to Vlad because of a random injury, Vlad kept the shirt because he performed really well and was undroppable.
I feel Walton has earned his shirt, Palmer is an excellent back up and should play FA Cup until Walton looses the shirt, either through poor performance or injury.

Good problem to have.

Walton was excellent against Coventry.

He has done pretty well since coming in. Can only really remember one goal where he could have done better….not 100% sure, but it may have been against QPR where he palmed it straight to the oncoming attacker.

Is his contract up at the end of the season? That may play a part also as to whether Palmer comes straight back in. You don’t want a disgruntled keeper that is on the books for a few more years.

Town supporter Don't think contracts will have any bearing on team selection. Been saying for ages that Walton is the best keeper at the club he dominates his area so much better than Palmer and that gives confidence to the defence. McKenna stayed very loyal to Muric but gave in to pressure from his defence who could no longer trust him that's what ive been told from one of the coaches at the club.

Van Blue, thanks for your answer to my question in the post above. I think you're saying it's a two way thing, which is fair enough. At least I got a sensible reply, and not just a downvote with no feedback! I too remember the SBR days, wonder if something like that will ever come round again ? For the sake of our younger supporters, I'd like to think so!
