McCarthy Looking to Add to Defensive Options
Monday, 6th Jan 2014 16:24

Boss Mick McCarthy says he could look at strengthening his defensive options during the January transfer window.

Over the last week young right-backs Elliott Hewitt and Frederic Veseli have respectively joined Gillingham and Bury on loan to gain experience, leaving the Blues short on defensive cover.

McCarthy told the club site: “I’m absolutely delighted with the squad of players we have got here and we have Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Hunty in there now as well.

“With the window open, it’s possible that we could have one or two changes. Players going out on loan might open things up to bring someone in.

“We have only used the five lads at the back, Cressy, Tyrone, Tommy Smith, Christophe Berra and Chambo and they have done remarkably well. That is perhaps an area where we could look to strengthen squad-wise.”

Former loanee Richard Stearman may be amongst those who come into McCarthy’s thoughts as he looks to add to his options, Town having been priced out of a move in the summer.

The 26-year-old, who is out of contract in June, has been offered new terms by Wolves and has been a regular in their side this season, but Town could renew their interest should no agreement be reached with his current club.

Why do we only go for his former players? Very predictable...

MM tends to misdirect. Ny saying we need defenders probably means he's bidding on a couple of wingers and a striker.

I'd love to see Stearman at the club but can you honestly see Jackett letting him leave when Wolves are knocking at the door for Promotion?

Is SEB's injury serious?? I see that Cardiff are letting Nicky Maynard go out on loan, would be worth a punt.

I agree with peoples views on Anderson, Tabb & certainly Wordsworth.

Couldn't we put Mings in midfield?

Just an idea!!

Was a target in the summer

so why not keep Hewitt and Veseli and use them as back up??
after all we actually own these players and surely they are here to have a future.

or instead we sign some plodder for 90 days on loan or something and he will play 30 minutes just like the lad from Villa did then go back

ChrisMakin2012 spot on with those players who bring nothing to the table. Majority of these posts all appear to be very similar which leads me to believe most actually attend the games and not believe media hype. 100% best cetral defensive partnership is Chambo and Smith yes Berra has been fantastic but Chambo has been exposed too many times as a full back and gives us no attacking option. Steerman was superb last season and really would be a great coup.
Anyone agree that Cressy appears to be affected again by transfer hype as he was when Villa came sniffing around. Not focused last couple of games.
Hey we're still up there with room for improvement. Trust the bearded wonder -
Praise for Roy Keane - priceless quote re Spurs on TV...

Lennyboy, whilst I agree with you that Stears was decent at RB, his first choice position is CB.

Blu - With the greatest respect to Orr, he is too flat footed, slow & got nailed a few times for pace.

Neither Chambo or Stears attack enough - like Wilnis used to.

Berra, is the most cultured CB we have & is probably one of the best since McGreal or Venus. He is the first name on MM team sheet guaranteed. So all you dreamers on here talking about clean sheets before he arrived, think again.

I don't see any merit in signing another right-back when we have Chambers, Hewitt and Veseli.

I'm not a great fan of the loan system (I'd rather we were bringing through our own youngsters), but can we find a good young midfielder from the reserves of one of the big Premiership clubs? Someone we can take on loan for a few months with a view to a permanent transfer?
