McCarthy Hoping to Make Deadline Day Addition
Friday, 31st Jan 2014 14:51

Town boss Mick McCarthy is hoping to tie up a signing to replace the departing Ryan Tunnicliffe this afternoon, with Leeds midfielder Paul Green understood to be that player. McCarthy currently expects no exits from Portman Road before tonight’s 11pm deadline, dismissing claims of Swansea interest in top scorer David McGoldrick.

Tunnicliffe’s loan has been cut short with Manchester United selling the midfielder to Fulham and McCarthy hopes to have his replacement in the squad for Saturday’s game at home to Bolton but is unconcerned if he has to wait a little longer.

“We’re trying,” he said. “I’m actually trying to get somebody in today, if that happens, brilliant, if it doesn’t there’s not a great deal I can do about it and the [loan window] opens in a week’s time.

“In fairness, he could be involved tomorrow, maybe not, so it’s not make or break. We could take him for 93 days if we took him when window’s shut.

“It’s just a matter of getting an answer really. The player wants to come and it’s fine. Depends whether they allow him to leave. So I don’t know in terms of a percentage, but I’d like to think it’s a good percentage in our favour that we’ll do it.”

Asked whether that player was Paul Green — who Leeds boss Brian McDermott has confirmed is the subject of an offerfrom an unnamed club — McCarthy was remaining tightlipped: “I tend not to talk about the players I’m trying to get in because I think it’s unfair to the parent club.

“If the parent club and says I’m looking at somebody from Manchester United, Manchester City or Leeds then I’ll be happy to talk about it. It always just leaves it open for other people to get involved as well, so I prefer not to.”

The Town boss confirmed that Tunnicliffe is joining Fulham and wishes him well: “Fulham are signing him, as far as I’m aware. I thought it was a fait accompli that one, a done deal.

“He won’t be coming back here. There was some suggestion he might go to another club, that they’ll loan him out, but I think if Fulham signing they’ll want all hands to the pump, do everything they can do to make sure they stay in the Premier League.

“I’m delighted for Tunners. I said to all the players that if they play well here, if they want to progress and you go to the Premier League, then fantastic, we’ll get somebody else in.

“Tunners wasn’t our player but he certainly came in and played like that. If we’ve helped to get him a Premier League move, I’m delighted.”

McCarthy believes the 21-year-old is ready for the top flight: “I do. Ability-wise, he is. I think there’s more to come from him, he can do more at times.

“I’ve said to him I think I had more belief in his ability than he had. But I think they’ve got a really good young player, who if he does the right things in his career, he’ll have a really good career in the Premier League.”

Aside from extensions to Elliott Hewitt’s loan at Gillingham and Freddie Veseli’s at Bury, McCarthy expects no one to be on their way out of Town before the 11pm deadline: “At the moment, no. There was an enquiry about one of them, but that’s as far as it went. I’m not going to [say who it was].”

Asked whether he wanted to knock down claims Swansea were set to make a £4 million offer for McGoldrick, he joked: “I’d want to knock it up, to be honest. I’d want to try and up the bid a bit!

“If they are [about to make a bid] they haven’t been in touch with me. I can categorically say I haven’t had any discussions about Dids with Swansea, or anybody else for that matter.”

Speaking about having seemingly kept hold of his best players during the window, he hinted that the enquiry may have been for one of the lower profile members of the squad: “I haven’t had any enquiries about them, which surprises me.

"It delights me actually because Tunners leaving has slightly destabilised it a bit because he’s played most games and he would be playing tomorrow if he was here."

McGoldrick, who is understood to have been interesting Crystal Palace, trained with the rest of the squad this morning.

McCarthy wouldn’t be drawn on reports earlier in the week claiming he had had a loan bid for Wolves striker Kevin Doyle, who is set to join QPR, rebuffed.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Frimpong has joined Barnsley on a permanent basis from Arsenal, having been linked with the Blues on a number of occasions since Mick McCarthy, who he spent time playing for during a loan spell at Wolves, took over at Portman Road.

Wolves striker Björn Bergmann Sigurdarson, linked with Town earlier today, is reportedly set to join Norwegian side Molde.

I'll back any player coming in, but I'm afraid Paul Green is a real 'hod carrier' of a player. He'll work his socks off, but he's got very little creative ability. I'm disappointed Tunnicliffe is going. He's not everyone's favourite on here, but I think he did a really good job for us. Ok, he's not the most creative midfielder, but I think he had more going for him than Green does. But I guess we can't complain, he wasn't our player. Like Colback and Noble before him, he'll probably go on to have a very good career in the Premier League. I just wish we could replace him with someone decent. We have one of the smallest squads in the Championship and yet we're 7th.

Even Scottish clubs are signing decent players let alone clubs who are below us in the league.
St Johnstone have released Rory Fallon and John Walk was seen in sports direct buying some boots.

I just hope we weren't in for Frimpong but opted against it due to no loan and being a permanent deal. If we can't compete with Barnsley I would be very concerned.

Also, thought we wanted to add to the squad even with Tunnicliffe here? So surely two new signings required? Not expecting us to spend heavily, but we have a very small squad and need additions

Has anyone at the club actually suggested that we had any interest in Frimpong? On what I have seen of him (admittedly limited) I'm quite happy to see him at Barnsley rather than here. I like the appropriateness of Trotter for the Trotters though.

MOAN ,WHINGE , SLAG OFF PLAYERS WE MAY NOT EVEN BE GETTING - LAUGHABLE LOT ON HERE TODAY !! Maybe the rain has addled afew brains !!
The pot is empty - simple - no l'argent - that is the bottom line
FFP is focus and unless we sold / sell AC or DM for 8 mill between them it was unlikely we were getting anyone
Tunners is going to Premier League - good luck to him
If we get the Damian Lewis lookalike from Leeds - lets back him - dont shoot him down before he has kicked a ball
7th Place and we are one of the top scoring teams in the league and still they moan
Richardson , Hunt , SEB ( when slimmer and fit) will be great additions
And we can always get in loan players in next few weeks
So SOME OF YOU need to wind the neck get down to Happy Hour and get ready for tomorrow and Trotter of the Trotts

Stowtractor and blueherts and anyone else has been citing the farce that is FFP if you look at the bbc sport website you will see that Mick is sceptical about the concept of FFP and what sanctions teams will fave if they flaunt it. There are also ways around FFP, which in theory is what the joint managing directors are sposed to look into and find out. Crowds have dwindled during evans reign, due to years of poor results on the pitch. Now we are getting somewhere they charge 39.50 for a matchday ticket for a tier A game in the championship!!! That wont bring the crowds flooding in, in today's economic climate!!! You say operate within FFP etc, the club should lower ticket prices to start with!!!

It's a shame the players who/when we sign them seem to be players who are not in other teams plans, have not played regulary and when they arrive are not match fit or get injured early on, so don't seem too much use when they 1st arrive. I wonder when we will next sign a player who is a good player from the off and makes a positive impact on the team? We can only hope.

Insofar as Ryan himself is concerned, I understand fully why he's leaving as it is a huge opportunity and I wish him all the best.

However, we have spent half a season developing Fulham's new player and what do we get for it?

If the rumours are true, we are going to go out and sign someone else's "experienced" cast off instead of bringing on our own youngsters (e.g. Lawrence). I would like to think that if they're good enough they will get a chance come what may, but it must be very frustrating both for the lads themselves and the coaches to see the likes of Green coming in on loan.

Don't panic everyone - two good signings including a midfielder, on their way. Mick and ME will have a plan.......Surely?

If QPR don't get promoted (really hope they don't) are they going to be hit hard by FFP.See they are at again, bringing players in left, right and centre.I'm struggling to understand what's going on with clubs, some are and some aren't adjusting to these so called new rules.

M mc knew what was before him when he signed his contract, he came here with a specific task to undertake which he currently is getting on with quite nicely. The subject of transfer funds was laid out in full to him be sure of that, his understanding of the current situation is what is allowing him to stay so focused and calm amonst this tranfer mayhem!! And also if its true he would have had a million to spend if he asked for bonus to keep us up, which i think was his obligation as being manager anyhow. He's not moaning about it so lets sit back and enjoy the progression that the club has made in his first year in charge rome.................. a day

An avenge of a goal every 10 appearances, not a bad return from a midfielder that's better than the the other 4 we have had playing in centre midfield this season

Some people are going on about "the moaners" again.
Gota say i can see their point, Green is a bog standard average player, you cant tell me there arent better loan options out there for the same kind of wages.
What do we pay our scouts for? Id rather someone like Garvan come back, hes miles better than this bloke.
I know some will say hes not a Mick type player etc but heres how i see it.
We arent good enough to get to the play offs, no matter what some fans think, end of.
We also wont go down.
Why not bring in a creative midfielder or give Wordsworth a run for the rest of the season and just go for it in every game and see where we end up. Does it really matter if we finish 9th or 15th?
Just use it to get used to playing a more attacking game for next season.
With Green we will just get another work horse in midfield, i know what id rather watch for the rest of the season.

McDermott has just been sacked. Does it make this deal more likely, or less so?

It's worrying that we don't seem to be able to attract or get better players than those who can't get into our rivals teams. What is the true financial position of the club? We know it's not brilliant but just how bad is it and is Evans really going to stick with it? These are the questions that are bothering me. We could so easily be doing a Coventry or Sheffield United a year or two from now I fear.

On the transfer front, I really believe that if we can't afford or attract better players than we appear to be interested in, then it is time to start trusting in and blooding some of our more promising youngsters. Yes, it could well mean lingering in the middle/lower middle of the Championship for a couple more years but I was lucky enough to witness first hand the young squad Sir Bobby put together and the wait was certainly worth it! Might well put it up in the air. Having watched the video he does seem a mick type player, but looks remarkably similar to skuse and hyam and the 2 of them are too similar as it is. Green looked quite effective as a holding midfielder. We need creativity and goals from midfield. Go for O'hara mick

If Mick thinks Tunners is Prem quality, then why on earth didn't the board dip in their pockets & give McCarthy the money to sign him on a perm???

Keeping my fingers crossed that McGoldrick is still here come 3pm tomorrow - I just put him down as first goal-scorer in my prediction for tomorrow!! lol
