McCarthy: Must Do Better
Monday, 10th Mar 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy admitted that Town will have to play better than they did at Middlesbrough in their final 12 games if they are to have any chance of making the play-offs.

Despite their 2-0 defeat at the Riverside, the Blues remain ninth in the Championship table, four points from sixth, after the weekend fixtures with Wigan in victorious FA Cup action at Manchester City, Reading and Brighton drawing 1-1 at the Amex and Blackburn losing 2-1 at home to Burnley in a Lancastrian derby on Sunday.

But after Saturday’s game, McCarthy was concentrating on Town rather than their play-off rivals' results.

“On a day like today, you start looking at everybody else,” he said. “But you can only look after yourself and we haven’t performed today.

“I’m not going to try and take any silver lining out of what anybody else has done.

"We’ve got to play better than that with the remaining games that we’ve got to have any chance of being anywhere near the play-offs. We’ve got to perform better, so forget what anybody else does.”

Despite his criticism of Saturday’s display, the Town boss wasn’t too harsh on his squad, who he said would be as annoyed as him about the performance: “None of the players have ever let me down for lack of effort, lack of endeavour, work rate or spirit, never ever.

“They do get frustrated and they’ll be as frustrated as I am. But I guess I’m the mouthpiece for everybody.”

Well mick they let you down on Saturday then and they all of of us down too. It was terrible. I agree we have to do a lot better. If we play like that again we will end up closer to the bottom than top and play off are no where near achievable

No lack of effort, lack of endeavour or work rate, MM continues to enthuse about these but where is the lack of pace of skill of vision of positional sense of control of awareness or don't they matter.

It was a wasted journey for me,all that time and money to watch a total load of rubbish.Just when will Mick get it that you don't put square pegs in round holes.I just hope he replaces Chambers for Tuesday night,as good as he is ,he is NOT a full back.Ok some players are being asked to play out of position,But he does have players in the squad to fit these positions.Loach must play in goal Tuesday,as Gerkin was awfull.Too many mistakes for me,And we need pace down the wings ,ie; Williams etc.Why not get Marriott back now, surely he is no worse than what we have at front.I fear Tuesday is our last chance to get near the play-offs so Mick MUST go for broke otherwise this is another wasted season on all fronts and I just wish the owner would explain the reasons just why he has not invested in the club, even though there are some restrictions on spending due to the FA ruling.CoyB,threes points tomorrow for us suffering supporters.

Well Mick ! we cannot do any worse that is for sure ??? with the marks in the Sunday papers they are the lowest I have ever seen for a team, with 5 being the highest and with three players getting 3 marks each, So come on Mick what the Hell did happen on Sat. afternoon at 3.00 pm onwards ????
PROVE Yourself tomorrow night at Yeovil that you are a good manager,, because a lot of fans are beginning to have there doubts about you !!!!!!!!!!!!

One win and its play-off time! One loss and the toys are thrown out of the pram!

Come on! Anyone who watches Town regularly knows that we are not good enough for the play-offs and that our position in the table belies the quality of football we play. So no more talk about play-offs please, lets just be realistic and concentrate on a top ten finish. This would be a considerable step forward from last year and a good position to build for next season.

hogster1970 added 08:53 - Mar 10
well i agree bergholtblue, we have never been good enough for the playoffs and a top ten finish will suit me , but what has been bothering me is early on in the year we had the perfomances and the results most of the time, because we had round pegs in round holes, well mostly, like i say if you get the performances the results will follow even if you end up with the draws and losses with wins chucked in, the losses will turn to draws and the draws turn to wins, how ever atm we are not getting the performances on the pitch and the results have dropped off considrably,

its about time mick started with a system stick with it and put the best players for them postions,

im glad we dont have 3 top class goal keepers which he likes as could see one play as center half !!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol,

for me i would bring back hewitt to go back as RB i would rotate the center halfs as they are all good, or like said above play 5 at the back with cressy and hewitt as wing backs with skuse hunt and williams in the middle then taylor and murphy or blake upfront,

Nothing to lose now, so please be more adventurous with attacking midfielders and give SEB a run of games. the only way he will get match fit is by playing!

Now here's novel idea for you Mick......ATTACK THE OPPOSITION instead of constantly lining up to defend the whole time.

It would be a huge surprise if we made the playoffs. More worrying is that we are not yet ready for the Premiership.

In the second half of last season the Smith/Chambers partnership in the centre of defence worked well. Cresswell is good at left back which leaves the problem at right back. Bringing in Berra has complicated things, whereas Stearman would have been the solution. Maybe there's nothing to lose by bringing back Hewitt and giving him a run at right back? Then what do you do about Berra? If we are playing players out of position he's GOT to be better than Nouble up front! (Do you remember in the 50s when Tom Parker was converted from a defender to a striker and how well he did?)

The midfield is a problem because of the lack of chances they create for the front men. A pity that Wordsworth has not had a run, but then his fitness and proneness to injury has been the problem. Why not use Williams while we have him?

The persistence with Nouble up front beggars belief! He has to be one of the all time worst forwards that has ever donned the ITFC shirt! He is the one who should have gone out on loan to learn his trade. Maybe swap him for Marriott?

Murphy is ok up front. Why not let SEB start with him (if only to get him match fit!) with Taylor operating behind them? Better than keep chopping and changing?

I also agree with those who argue that Loach deserves a run in the team. Gerken hasn't done that well to warrant a secure place.

Think we have thrown away the play-offs now, and with a bit of luck wont go down... So lets see what we are really made of !!!!

Mark added 09:56 - Mar 10
I'm not sure McCarthy lines up teams defensively, after all we do usually play with three up front, it's just the lack of quality, especially in midfield, that means we are far short of a promotion side. We then have the right-back issue which has been going on year since David Wright left, and it seems the goalkeeper issue is returning (which is a shame, as Gerkin had been doing well).

hancockingoal added 10:03 - Mar 10
Mick has developed a squad that is overall not good enough to challenge seriously for promotion. Maybe his hands are tied financially or he is not adventurous enough and prefers effort and endeauver over flare? Out of a squad of 18 or so he only has 4 players that might get into a promotion chasing side and out of those 4 players he really must make his mind up who to play in their best postion or who to drop! McGoldrick is our best player and must be when fit the first name on the team sheet. The other 3 are Chambers, Berra and Smith, all on their day excellent centre backs. The dilemna however is that 3 into 2 do not go and despite how tough the decision may be, Mick must decide which one to leave on the bench? He is after all probably paid a lot of money to make those sort of decisions. Chambers is an excellent centre back and a leader but he in not a right back and is too often exposed. We signed a right back on loan some weeks ago and he has only played something like 12 minutes I think and then in midfield? The rest if the squad are all average players, maybe Taylor might step up given more games? You cannot fault their effort or commitment but not one of them has the ability to dictate or change the game! I am not completely blaming Mick for the squad he has assembled, as I said earlier we do not know what financial restraints he is under? also where are the flare, game changing players? It seems to be that over the course of time clubs only develop the 'workers' and any class players are snapped up by the greedy premiership clubs! This is a fact of life and I am afraid we probabaly just have to put up with it!

I know it's paper talk but according to one of the papers this morning MM needs to reduce the budget by 3 million! Can anyone tell me how he can reduce a budget that we don't have?? As a massive fan like I'm guessing you all are it's hard to criticise your team especially when they have over performing this year but I wish MM would just mix it up at times!! I see us a top 10 side this year and a relegation side next as we will sell are best players I.e cressy, Didy, Hyam, Smith and ME won't reinvest into the club which leaves us with more free players!! It's such a shame that our owner doesn't show as much passion as us fans but I think even the fans are starting to turn as are attendance shows!! For a team I love and support I just hope we return were are history shows we belong!! Come on ITFC!!! 3 points tomorrow

Hancockingoal - a well-balanced view sir. To follow on I would actually say (and have said in other articles) that for some reason MM is going back to the loan system again to littel effect - a problem before with Jewell and Keane. Jonny Williams is only here for a month to get fit for another club. So, either take the benefits, or send him back. Frazer Richardson is also not playing, so why is he here whilst Hewitt and Veseli (both right backs) are out on loan. I agree Chambers would be more effective and happier in his natural position.

Fundamentally, no progress will really be made until and unless the academy is improved ans starts to bear fruit. Haven't heard any news lately on the Academy One Status unless I've missed something? But the reality is that our club has only ever done well when we have a vibrant youth system. It is as flat now as it was c. 1988-94 (when only Phil Whelan came through of any note-ish). This may take time. We just have to hope MM's scout system produces a couple more nuggets this summer. But even then, MM is not one to risk kids ahead of experience.

Your comment is 'spot on' too chicorytwin, well spotted! Have just been reading a report about the match officials. Point one is, apart from one who is from West Sussex they are all West Country people and the history of the Ref is interesting too. His first match was at Yeovil and he has reffed them eight times. It appears in his first game there he failed to award an obvious penalty but, from what is said, appeared to make up for that in the next few matches and, reading between the lines, appeared to favour Yeovil though his last two games in charge of them appear to have been even steven so let us hope that he doesn't have a down on us tomorrow because that is just all we need right now!

Wishing you good luck with the rest of the games Mick; we all get frustrated because we all want the same thing, let's push on with a win tomorrow and head (together) towards the play offs with yourself and Terry at the helm, COYB.
