McCarthy Confident Williams Will Stay
Monday, 17th Mar 2014 18:57

Boss Mick McCarthy says he’s confident that on-loan Crystal Palace midfielder Jonny Williams will remain at Portman Road for the rest of the season. The 20-year-old’s initial month with the Blues is up at the end of March.

Williams made the first start of his spell during Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Wigan Athletic following two appearances from the bench.

“Jonny was excellent on Saturday. He had a really good game,” McCarthy told the club website.

“I think if he is playing games then we can keep him. That was the agreement but they do have the option to take him back, which is normal.”

I was really impressed with Williams on Saturday, one of the few players we have at the moment who seems to have his mind on attacking the opposition and playing clever balls forward rather than sideways. He was also very good at tracking back so I can see why MM is a fan of him.

Hopefully we can get him next season, we definitely need a creative player similar to him to progress.

I thought Palace said he 'had a big future with them'...so little chance he'll be here next season but if we can have him until May then that's good, as long as MM plays him in the right position!

Was impressed with him on Saturday, looked to start moves and had a great eye for a pass, unfortunately for him and us he was man marked by Tunnicliffe and McArthur for the whole game so we are certainly yet to see the best of him, Murphy and him just behind both had very good games on sat and certainly wasn't their fault we lost the game. Really hope we can extend his loan

Agree with you Timmy, if we can keep to end of season, then great. Thereafter I think his future lies elsewhere. The boy could and will play at a higher standard. We were very lucky to get him.

I think he looks like he's going to be a quality player, but unfortunately, the reality is that he's not going to be our player next year. If we can get good results against Brighton, Forest and Derby then we still have a slight chance of play offs and should do our best to keep him. If we lose them 3 games then we may as well send him back, use the players that will actually be here in the summer and look to build for next season. I'd like to see Hewitt and Marriott recalled and given a chance before the end of the season. Chambers is starting to look knackered and so blatantly out of position.

Ok,great little player and great that we've got him but if we lose saturday then we'll be pretty much out of contention for the play-offs and imho should be using the remaining games to give "our" players the experience ahead of next season, not crystal palaces' squad players.

Any manager with a brain should see that.
