Trust: Opt Out Unacceptable
Thursday, 3rd Apr 2014 20:52

The Ipswich Town Independent Supporters Trust says it is “unacceptable” for the club to require season ticket holders who pay via the direct debit scheme to opt out of becoming Academy Friends rather than opt in.

In a statement the Trust said: “ITFC 1st has received feedback from a number of members who are unhappy about the automatic addition of Academy Friend donations, given that many supporters are already having to stretch themselves financially to afford a season ticket.

“An automatic £120 addition to this cost could cause significant problems for those already on a tight budget, and the Trust's view is that this is a poorly-judged move by ITFC which will not inspire goodwill from supporters towards the club or the academy.

“Quite apart from ethical considerations, we are seeking advice on the legality of this move, and will be taking this issue up with the club at the earliest opportunity.

“In the meantime we urge members to be vigilant about checking their direct debit schedules from ITFC, to respond to the club promptly and appropriately, and to contact us directly with any views on this development which you would like us to convey to the club.

“The Trust believes that this is totally unacceptable and it will be putting pressure on the club to ensure that only fans who have specifically opted in to this payment scheme are charged the extra £120 — rather than putting the onus on the season ticket holder to cancel it.”

Agree, the club have got this completely wrong. Well done to those who can afford to donate to the academy, but I personally would rather send ten pounds a month to a charity rather than funding the career of someone who will earn far more money than I could ever dream of.

Couldn't agree more. ITFC have gone about this the wrong way. We used to be a family club. Many people wouldn't have realised they needed to opt out, particularly elderly fans. This is disappointing. Apology required.

Hadn't posted for a couple of years and was just sitting back comfortable in the 'knowledge' renewal was automatic.
Thanks TWTD I have emailed my OPT OUT this evening - should not have been necessary.
The Trust's comments above, are spot on.
Hopefully we are promoted in 6 weeks time and I will get my 50% discount anyway..

This should be the main story.

Good point Big Jase – the club should get the Academy kids to sign a contract stating that if they "make it" then they have to pay a monthly sum back to the Academy for as long as they are a professional player...

Totally out of order. This has been done for one reason only. To gain extra money from people who dont realise, people who are lazy, people who are forgetfull and older fans who perhaps arent great with computers etc.
It should have been opt in, whats wrong with the people who run our club?

I had no idea that they were charging us an extra tenner - hadn't read the booklet that came; just thought it would automatically renew...How do you opt out?

It definitely says on the last page of the booklet that you have the option on the application form to choose and on the application form it says "tick here to sign up" how on earth can that be an error as stated by the club today? As it automatically renews if you pay by dd and you have to return the form to make changes then to me that means I don't want it as I haven't returned the form and I am sure the same will apply to several hundreds if not thousands of supporters!! So basically we have all been mislead!!!

Thanks thebeat -I just tried the Opt Out link and it didn't work...This is not one of the Club's finest hours is it?

dalebobby spot on. The Direct Debit Customer Season Ticket Renewal form only provides for an OPT IN to the scheme so how can the club even consider increasing the DDebit unless the form is sent back indicating on OPT IN.

There should be no requirement to OPT OUT having not OPTED IN.

Hope the players do better on Saturday than the Club's administrtors have done this week!!!

Really cant see what the problem with this is for people. Its no more difficult to opt out than to opt in. In fact its easier if ur wanting to give. Ok. The club should have got the forms correct in the 1st place, then this wouldnt have been such a problem as people would have known from day 1. Tbh, for me, its a no brainer. The chance of a free season ticket in year 1of the prem lge, rather than pay prob around £600 makes sense. I aaccept totally that there may be some who cant afford the extra this season, in which case, is it really such a big problem to opt out? Im also aure that those who cant afford this extra tenner will suddenly find the eztra €100 or so extra it will cost compared to this seasons season ticket when they could have got it for nothing. A aaving of over £ 300

Totally unacceptable! The opt out link didnt work for me either. I had to copy the address on it then paste it into my e mail account to do it. I also threatened if anything extra was taken apart from my expected monthly direct debits I would cancel them altogether - and Im 60 and a life long supporter who hasnt missed a match since 1982! Very unhappy that the club is doing this. There are many that will not realise until too late. Attendances are already down so why alienate people by doing things like this?

The club have dropped a massive clanger with this , either deliberately or by incompetence they have misled people - if Simon Clegg was still here there would be calls for his head , but there is not even an apology for this mess .

The documents sent out made no mention of having to opt out , so most renewals would have needed no action .

Thanks to TWTD and Reuser is God for bringing this to our attention .

To be fair to the ticket office , it's not their fault and after I sent an e mail yesterday , they came back within an hour to accept my e mail as confirmation that I wanted to opt out and will not be charged .

Overall though the club have dropped a big one over this

All this does seem to suggest that the management do not believe we are good enough to go up this season!

What happens if we do?

hadleighboyblue. you are right. the documents sent out do not mention th e opt out, and the club have said they don't. they said the forms had the incorrect information on this, as they do. what they have said is that the opt out IS clearly stated on the payment schedule forms, which you have not received yet. and also, they have apologised publicly in todays star. it certainly was unprofessional of them to leave this information out of the original package but no more than that. just hope, if we get promoted next season that all you guys who opt out enjoy paying £6-700 for your ticket for the premier league while im watching free of charge(other than the £120 ive paid to academy).and if we don't, at least ill know ive given help in finding the stars of the future(hopefully) but im sure youll all suddenly be able to afford that much next year. plus of course so many of our fans(me included) bemoan the fact that so few players come through from our academy, but here you have the chance to help but turn it down. and before anyone accuses me, no im aware that there are exceptions to this who could not afford to do it, a married man with kids ,for example who all have season tickets im sure would struggle to find the extra tenner a month. but he can just opt out. and at the end of the day theres no difference between an opting in or opting out system neay, just those who don't want to do it have to opt out rather than vice versa

It's things like this which is one of the reasons we only get 15K each week. Totally ignorant this club is towards looking after fans and community local pride.. Scum have it right!!! Always have. Lowestoft / Beccles / Halesworth / Southwold etc have gone from being 50/50 split to well in favour of Norwich over the last 20 years. Not because of turn coats but because Town fans don't bother going anymore. Norwich reach out the communities / schools / sports clubs etc etc. Even Beccles tennis club get invited to Norwich matches for like £1 a ticket. They have pride in the community. Town fans say we are the same size as scum in terms of support… No f'ing way!!! Our fan base has fizzled out. Theirs has grown. They are much bigger than us now…. Its soooo true. Trust me!!!!
