Cresswell Again Linked With Baggies
Monday, 26th May 2014 14:34

West Brom are reported to have lodged their interest in Town left-back Aaron Cresswell. The Baggies, who are currently without a manager, are amongst the clubs to have watched the 24-year-old on a regular basis during 2013/14.

According to the Birmingham Mail Albion have “well and truly lodged” their interest in Cresswell, who has been linked with half the clubs in the Premier League at one time or another.

Manager Mick McCarthy, who rates Cresswell as the best left-back in the division, says he won’t stand in the player’s way if the right offer comes in during the close season.

If Cresswell, who is contracted to Town until the summer of 2017, were to move on his former club Tranmere Rovers would be entitled to 20 per cent of the profit the Blues would make on the £420,000 they paid for him after his switch to Portman Road in the summer of 2011.

A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses, with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

With Town adhering strictly to the Financial Fair Play rules, McCarthy is unlikely to have much of a transfer war chest at his disposal this summer unless a current player is sold for a significant fee.

And who at West Brom is showing interest in Cresswell when they don't even have a manager??

meh, starting to become almost certain that he will leave. just a matter of who and how much for now. id say at least 5 mill.

spend it on a pacey creative winger, centre mid. ( basically what were all calling for)

Michael11- West Brom have a Director of Football, and have used that set-up for years. It doesn't take must of a genius to work out that as they need a LB, Cresswell (one of very few British options) would be on their shortlist of potential targets.

Anything over £4m would be a bonus, which would mean about £3.2 in our pockets... MM would work wonders with that!!

Diamond, £5m would be better leaving approx £4.2m - the same as we got for Hermann back in the day :-)

yawn!...I wonder how many of these 'linked' stories we have and will get during this summer, it's not even worth reading about until an offer IS put on the table. Next...

Well considering MM has unashamedly been talking up Cresswell's credentials in order to encourage suitors its hardly a surprise that the player will be on his way.

Didnt people notice several Town players go over and give Cressie a man hug before the start of our final home game? It was a definate " all the best" moment.

Its only about how much of a bidding war we can create. History repeats itself. Weve players such as Dyer, Sedgley in the past and built the team in the income. MM knows Cresswell has a shelf life. Sell whilst still presumed hot. Although IMO the player has never quite reached the level he displayed during his first season here. We will replace him with either the fast developing Mings or another player. But MM knows he needs to cash in now in order to move on.

Good Luck Cressie, and thanks for your services. Time for both parties to move on now.

A shame, but maybe now is the time to cash in on perhaps our biggest asset. But let's get real friends. Think about this deal from the perspective of NOT being a Town fan. He has great potential for a Premier league team, but not a proven Premier record. It's unlikely to be one of the big four or five team come in for him as they either have their own potentially good youngster or want proven internationals, so it going to be the West Broms, Stoke Citys, etc who will be interested in him; then they also have FFP hanging over them. IMO this all adds up to no more than £2.5-£3m plus certain add-on, if we are lucky. It's not peanuts, but nor is it going to fund huge expensive changes either. And more worryingly, who says MM will get anything over 50% of and sales to fund improvements? I've seen nothing to guarantee spending regardless of how the cash comes in. I feel ME is starting to recoup a little of his investment. Time will tell.

Another rumour! but I think he will go to give MM funds for the summer so until it's cast in stone all we can do is twiddle our thumbs or anything else you might wish to twiddle!! and see what occurs have a nice summer guys!

The problem is left backs without premier league experience are unlikely to attract a large fee. Probably around £3M in the current climate. I fully expect one of our better players to leave this Summer and sadly would prefer it to be Cresswell, we have a ready made replacement, who given time will shine IMO. If we lose McGoldrick, I fear the worst. None of the other strikers are in his class.

Yet another rumour, bet he will still by here when the season starts this repeat story is getting boring, clever bit of business giving Cresswell a contract extension he will cost some club top dollar should he be sold.

I think that in our position we have to accept that like the vast majority of Championship sides, all our players have a price, and isn't beyond the realms of possibility that we could well lose both Cresswell and McGoldrick, with only a percentage of any funds that may raise being earmarked by the club for MM to use for replacements. It's a worrying position to be in - but we are in good company regarding this problem as this will be what, with the exception of only about 3 maybe 4 other Championship clubs, we will all be facing this summer. If we are going to get back into the top flight we are going to have to do it the hard way when compared to the likes of Leicester this last season.

jas0999 - totally agree. I think Mings can do a job for us if /when Cresswell is on his way, but I would be very disappointed to see McGoldrick moving on. I still think the play-offs would have been ours if he'd not been injured and he would be virtually impossible to replace without spending really huge money.

If someone is daft enough to offer £3,420,000 then I will drive him there!

Will be a shame if cressy goes as I genuinely believe he doesn't want to leave and is happy at the club. If anything it is the club wanting to sell him which is a shame unless we get a reasonable fee for him, bearing in mind he still has 3 years left on his contract, was in championship team of the year and was joint top assist maker and we owe tranmere money. Gotta be between 5-6 million to start with. If its less than 4 il be pretty hacked off

Jimmy86 added 17:47 - May 26
I also believe that mcgoldrick is actually replaceable if he was to leave for 2-3 million. He was great last season but the question is, can he replicate it again next season?? There are a lot of strikers available on a free. People lile billy sharp, leon best, DJ, shola ameobi. So there are strikers about if he did leave. Didz has been great but lacked pace and wasn't great from the spot either

My remarks about Cressy are same as Dids.
Everyone on here seems to want to sell our left back, including it seems MM,which I find astounding;surely shouldn't the Club try and hang on to their best players to increase chances of promotion especially as the FFP seems to be ignored by many clubs. It will be interesting to see what happens in Jan when sanctions are SUPPOSED to be implemented.

BigAlsMate added 17:59 - May 26
Sorry Jimmy86, I don't think you are being realistic with your valuation - though I certainly hope you would be right! I think you'd better be prepared to be hack off I'm afraid
1

Jimmy86 added 19:16 - May 26
Well he is valued at 4 million and if we are going to sell then we are, or we should be in the driving seat, we hold the cards. There are also multiple clubs believed to be interested and that in itself could see a bidding war. Maybe my valuation is a bit optimistic so id hope for at least 4, coz thats what the club value him at. Anything less will be poor business as we dont have to sell

Lathers added 12:19 - May 27
McGoldrick is the answer to our attacking/creative midfield issues. Just spend the Cresswell cash on 2 decent championship strikers and move Nouble on. Ameobi and Billy Sharp would be decent additions.

"Bohslegend" - we received £ 800 000 for Herman - we paid £ 4.5 million for him!!
