Cresswell Expected to Complete Move Before Weekend
Thursday, 3rd Jul 2014 13:56

Town left-back Aaron Cresswell is undergoing a medical at West Ham United and is expected to complete a move to the Hammers later today or tomorrow.

Rumours that Cresswell had missed training at Playford Road and was having a medical with the Hammers surfaced early this afternoon.

Firm details of the agreed fee - which will almost certainly prove to be officially undisclosed - have yet to emerge, however, London sources are reporting that the deal is worth almost £4 million, a figure which may include some add-ons. It’s understood that the Blues have previously turned down other offers for the 24-year-old, with reports elsewhere claiming Fulham were amongst those to make a bid.

West Ham were amongst the clubs keeping tabs on Cresswell throughout the 2013/14 campaign and were linked with a possible move by their local press yesterday.

The Hammers are understood to have turned their attention to Cresswell, having had an offer for Norwich's Martin Olsson turned down.

Speaking on Monday, manager Mick McCarthy confirmed that he wouldn’t stand in the way of Cresswell if an offer came in from a Premier League side: “I said last season, and my stance hasn’t changed, Cressy got all the plaudits for being the best left-back in the league and if at some stage somebody comes in and the deal’s right, it becomes untenable because [in those circumstances] the player wants to go. It’s not that we want to sell him but I might be able to reinvest if that’s the case.

“I don’t want to sell him but he himself is really ambitious and if the right deal comes along, who knows, it may have to happen.

“And if it does, I’ll shake his hand, thank him for all that he’s done and I’ll crack on and get somebody else. That’s the way it happens.”

McCarthy has previously said that he will look to second-choice left-back Tyrone Mings to replace Cresswell, while the fee is likely to go towards strengthening the squad.

Cresswell's former club Tranmere Rovers are entitled to 20 per cent of the profit the Blues would make on the £420,000 they paid for him following his summer 2011 switch to Portman Road.

A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses, with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

Cresswell, named in the Championship Team of Year for 2013/14, has made 138 appearances for Town, all starts, scoring seven goals.

Coincidentally, West Ham are at Portman Road for their first friendly of pre-season on Wednesday 16th July (KO 7.45pm).

First of all if it's what he wants the all the best to him should think the money would be £3m rather than 2 plus West Ham pay the sell on fee. This is now where we find out about wether Evans is really into this club or if the money is spent elsewhere. Expect to see Olsen in by monday as competition for Mings then a keeper and a right-wing wonder.

According to radio Suffolk it's between 2&3 million! Make of that what you like. Personally I think we've been properly robbed.

Why do people keep comparing Cresswell with Shaw. Shaw is a class full back with a huge future not only for Man U but England.

Cresswell is a decent championship left back but not in the same class at Shaw.

If we get £3m for him I think it is a great bit of business by MM who has been bumming him up for a while and has finally going to get a bit of cash to spend.

Between 2 and 3 million isn't enough. Cresswell has huge potential and would definitely cut it in the premier league. Gutted is an understatement... McCarthy needs to reinvest what money he will have to replace Cresswell.

........ we will probably never know what the fee is / was - but my guess is there will be none of whatever to be spent on recruitment.

Just proves that we no longer rate on equal terms to West Ham - we have done, and more !!

That's not progress in terms of our Club - in my book anyway.

Think Mings will step up and prove to be a more than adequate replacement . With the new left sided players signed this could be a stronger area as they will have time to get set in pre - season . MM & TC are well capable of producing a stronger unit with the time , and new players , they have this year

Cresswell is only as valuable as the other clubs are willing to pay for him. 3 million give or take a bit is probably the going rate for a left back with no premier league experience. He was probably one of the higher earners too. Good luck Aaron at West Ham, this is not a sideways step, it,s top flight football with the riches that can come with it. Look forward to seeing him back at PR in a couple of weeks.

Quite agree with you compton. Mingsy will turn out to be an excellent LB. Just hope that MM will give him his chance .

Yep, some people on here are living in dreamland. £2-3m represents a good fee for Cresswell and a good bit of business. Who on earth was realistically going to pay around £5m for him?!

Typical ITFC flogging their best assets to the first bidder who comes along with an under value crap offer, maybe box a bit more clever and see who else is about prepared to pay more, maybe get the fee up a bit. As for wet sham I think Creswell could do much better for himself.

Always hated losing good players, but it's done so we need to make the money (I was hoping above £5m, but that doesn't look like it's gonna happpen) really count....and Mick is as good as anyone at doing that. Thanks Aaron for all that you've done. Real shame to see you go.

Thanks for your contribution Aaron Cresswell, it's been a pleasure to watch such a talented player mature and grow in stature. We shouldn't stand in his way and we have a more than adequate replacement in Tyrone Minges. Good luck Cressy!
