Mings: Fulham Win Showed What We're All About Monday, 11th Aug 2014 06:00 Left-back Tyrone Mings believes Saturday’s live-on-Sky 2-1 victory over former Premier League side Fulham will have shown the rest of the Championship what Town are all about.
"That throws down a marker in the Championship. Fulham came here and found out quite quickly how hard it is,” the 21-year-old said.
”It was on the television and it showed teams that Ipswich are hard to beat and we can score goals, when the chances come we can tuck them away.
"Fulham never really had any options once they realised they could not play their way through us.
"They had their diamond formation but never got much joy out of that and when they went wide they got no joy out of that either."
Mings was delighted to see David McGoldrick get back on the scoresheet after six months out with a knee injury, last season’s 16-goal top scorer adding Town's second goal just after the hour, Daryl Murphy having netted the opener on 32.
"It was great for McGoldrick to come back in that manner,” Mings said. “It was a great boost for him and it lifted the team as well.
”The first goal settled us down and the second goal helped and gave us a cushion.
"After they scored it gave them some momentum but it showed the character we have among the whole team how we held out and it showed the resilience the whole squad has.”
Mings has a chance to establish himself at left-back with Aaron Cresswell departing for West Ham in the summer and new signing Jonny Parr missing the start of the season with a groin injury.
Was filling Cresswell’s boots difficult? "He is only a size seven, so it wasn’t that hard!," he joked.
“No, me and Cressy have different attributes and I don't really compare myself to him or base my game on what he did.
"I don't look at stepping into his shoes, more my playing my own game. If I can get forward and put in crosses, which help the team then that is great."
"I felt I held my own. I did it against Reading [on the opening day] last season when they had just come down but got injured, which wasn't the plan but now I have played against Fulham and it went well.
"Everyone is buzzing, but we have 45 games to go so we will see what happens."

Mings has great potential and I've seen him play much better than on Saturday (e.g. vs Leicester last season). Can't help feeling that his best postion ultimately should be centre back.

I'm wondering what game some of you lot were watching on Saturday. Mings wasn't exceptional but he did a job. Anyone who thinks he was out of his depth is clueless. He held is own and played some nice forward passes at times. He's a decent young player. There's room for improvement but with MM and the coaching staff we have I'm confident he'll get it. There were no weak links on Saturday. I even though bajner did ok while he was on getting some decent flick ons from Hewitt's long throws. He just needs to get used to the championship and playing with the squad. Very optimistic about the season ahead.

I would just like to point out that I support all of our players. Saying that Tyrone Mings looked out of his depth was pretty much the same as saying "he showed inexperience". I appologise if my inaccurate, clueless and harsh, ridiculous comment has offended anyone. Especially Tyrone Mings. Hopefully all of our young players can learn their trade in the first team as long as it is not at the expense of the team success.

Thought Mings did OK - can't recall much going past him other than goal and that was slip which could have happened to anyone. Like fact he's prepared to go forward and that should be encouraged providing it doesn't lead to any positional exposures. Young lad who we need to back.

From what I can remember, he looked much better on the ball than off it.

It's a good job that we won on Saturday! What would some of you be posting if we had lost? It's a great start to the season, everyone gave 100% and MM got the shape and the tactics right against a side that has just come down from the Prem. Happy days. Try to enjoy them. Have you all forgotten the dark days of the Football Genius (RK). COYB

Mings will grow into the role. It will take time. Reality is he did look shaky, and his slip did cost us the goal. But overall he did okay. Personally, I feel he would make a better centre back, but let's face it, we have plenty of cover there. Thought Banjar looked very poor mind. Okay it was just 43 minutes, but looked completely out of his depth. Surely we could have found someone better?

Yet another predictable clichéd armchair pundit. However did MM get the job with so many experts on young footballers on our doorstep?

Didn't get a lot of cover at times from Tabb playing in front of him. On the other hand Chambers looked a better fullback with Hewitt in front of him.

Without a doubt defensively he was the weak link, he almost made a mistake trying to pass a short ball to Skuse which nearly went to the opposition in our box (1st half). He is relatively young and inexperienced so hopefully he'll learn.
