Chambo Staying Pumped Up
Friday, 5th Dec 2014 06:00

Town captain Luke Chambers has vowed his untimely slip of the tongue after Saturday’s last-gasp victory at Charlton will not be repeated — but it’s a different story when it comes to his trademark fist-pump celebration.

End-of-game gestures by players to fans are nothing new. Previous skipper Matt Holland used to lap the pitch in appreciation of the supporters’ backing, but Chambers has really struck a chord with his own solo effort that is becoming more iconic with every game that passes.

He looked back on events at The Valley and said: “Once I’d sworn on telly I was looking behind me because I heard the roar from our crowd and I knew what was coming.

“I was laughing inside because if it is great for them it is fantastic for me. For virtually every single one of the 2,500 away fans to stay behind is a big thing for me.

“The lads give me a bit of stick about it but I’m sure they want to get involved as well because they were asking for one at Bournemouth when we had drawn 2-2 and that shows you the way things are moving at the moment. It’s just brilliant to be a part of it.”

Meanwhile, Chambers looked ahead to the forthcoming Christmas/New Year period and laughed: “They’ve put us away on Boxing Day again, which is a little bit frustrating, but we know as footballers that it is part of our job. Whether we’ve got to be in training on Christmas Day or not, it makes no difference to us.

“We’ll see our families for a bit and then it’s back off to work again. But it’s one we look forward to because when things are going well you want the games to come thick and fast.

“It’s an exciting time for us, especially as we’re sitting second in the league. We know it’s very tight and a couple of average results could have us down to sixth or seventh. We’ll just keep ticking them off and hopefully continue to move forward.”

F***ing amazing! Showed a lot of raw emotion after that game. I just went mental, watching it on tv, and managed to smash a light fitting when we scored!

Ok he shouldn't of sworn live on TV but what do sky expect when they stuff a microphone under a players nose within seconds of the final whistle. You could see emotionally charged they both were and so they should be. Just don't do it next year mate the F.A. cant stand swearing in the Premiership lol

I think the fact that we all stayed behind waiting for Chambo's fist pump at Charlton shows that there is a bond between the fans and the players as well as a tight bond within the club.If we can all stay together over the next 5/6 months there is no reason why we cannot finish in the top two.

What fantastic idea for the whole team to start doing it.

This is something that has annoyed me for years now at every level of the game but especially in the Premier league when you see players just walk of the pitch or do a pathetic clap to fans from a 100 yards away. Supporters spend a lot of time and money to watch the team and the players need to reminded of this sometimes. When you see a manager tell players to go thank the supporters it shows how far removed from reality most of them are.
Thankfully at Ipswich over the years most have shown consideration and taken a couple of minutes to walk or jog round the pitch after the match even if they have lost.
Here's hoping we can thrash dirty Leeds and improve our goal difference.
