Liverpool Defender Linked

Town are eyeing Liverpool youngster Ryan McLaughlin as a potential replacement for Tyrone Mings, according to one of this morning’s tabloids.

The Daily Star reports that the Blues are trailing the 20-year-old, who is yet to make a senior appearance for the Reds having joined them from Northern Irish side Glenavon as a 16-year-old.

Belfast-born McLaughlin spent time on loan at Barnsley last season, making nine appearances.

Capped twice by Northern Ireland at full level, McLaughlin wouldn’t appear to be a direct potential replacement for Mings as he is a right-back - as is his older brother Conor who plays for Fleetwood - but may be viewed as possible cover at full-back with Jonny Parr preferring to operate on the left.

Previously the Blues were reported to be keeping tabs on Charlton’s 21-year-old left-back Morgan Fox.

Mings continues to be linked with Arsenal and various other Premier League clubs in most of today’s papers.

The Gunners are still believed to be the frontrunners to sign the 21-year-old with manager Arsene Wenger having previously confirmed his interest. The Frenchman has said he has money to spend in January.

Elsewhere, Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, QPR and Crystal Palace are amongst those to have watched the former Chippenham Town man in action in recent weeks.

Speaking on Friday, Town boss Mick McCarthy insisted that it would take an “absolutely astronomical” bid to persuade the Blues to sell Mings or one of his team-mates in January.

Meanwhile, former Blues chief executive Simon Clegg is again being linked with the role of general secretary of the FA with current incumbent Alex Horne stepping down next month.

Clegg, 53, is reportedly the leading contender with Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan also amongst those being considered.

Clegg, who left the Blues after almost four years at the club in February 2013, is currently the chief operating officer of the inaugural European Games, which will be held in Baku next summer.

Will not be happy if he goes...it just is not good common sense at this moment in time.

Any sale won't be MM's decision but ME's and why on earth would he be sold as his value will only go up. Also agree with the comments about Parr yesterday and every other time I've seen him - what a great player and a very able sub. Good enough to play each game but that shows how strong our squad is.

Simon Clegg is in line to take on a job at the FA? I thought the organisation had enough problems.

If we lose Mings I trust Mick's judgement on who we bring in. McLaughlin sounds promising and another for the future though we thought that of Mings and look at him now.

Anyone who doesn't think parr is good enough needs to watch more football, Parr is a quality championship left back. just because hes not 21 and doesn't run like the flash doesn't mean he needs replacing. if anything we are in the same position as we've been in for years, we need an actual RB, not a make shift RB

76blue, you obviously were not at yesterdays match. Jonny Parr was brilliant, a capable replacement for Mingsy. But I hope he stays and helps to the Prem.

Jus think with his dad being linked to Chelsea he will have high ambitions for his son and when was the last time a young player stayed with his club to gain exp, they always go as soon as poss.

We would be mad to let any player go in January, however like MM says if a premiership club are willing to pay astronomical fee then no player is bigger than the club and ME would take it, but would then have to invest in a replacement anyway and if it was Mcgoldrick then to buy a better striker would cost more than 7-8m or whatever we get so cannot see anyone leaving. Just worried if we do not get promotion this year then the squad could be ripped apart!

He's in contract until June 2017, there's no need to sell him!

Parr is a solid left back who had a decent game against Boro. He is not anywhere near being Mings replacement as Mings is consistently our best performer and gives so much when going forward.
These two are poles apart imo and Parr would always remains a back up player albeit a good back up player.

Wouldn't be happy with this at all. He's no looker, unlike Mings.

McCarthy's consciously developing a team of hunks, in order to break more than just men's hearts in the Premiership next season.

This chap looks like Paul Taylor, and we all know what happened to him...

....... like it, or not - Mings will be on his way much sooner, rather than later.

He will be playing at the very highest level very soon.

@kaimcneil don't agree. I think Chambers is doing fantastic at RB and prefer him there then at CB.
