St Ledger Leaves Town
Monday, 29th Dec 2014 14:09

Town boss Mick McCarthy has revealed that Ireland international centre-half Sean St Ledger has left the Blues having come to the end of his short-term contract. McCarthy says that he’s happy to have Matt Clarke, 18, and Elliott Hewitt, 20, as his back-up defenders.

St Ledger, 30, joined the Blues a month ago after a short trial and made the first-team matchday squad twice but failed to make an appearance.

“He’s gone,” McCarthy said. “I’ve got Matt Clarke, who is excellent and I wouldn’t stand in his way by having somebody that’s not going to do any better than Clarkey.

“And I’ve got Elliott Hewitt out on loan at Colchester, who is on 24-hour notice. I’m not going to put a block in their progression by taking somebody in.”

Was never really a fan of St. Ledger so not worried about his departure. MM is a shrewd operator and he will have more options I am sure.

........ to certain people - THE BAR HAS BEEN RAISED - or hadn't you noticed ?? - therefore different situations arise accordingly - OR SHOULD DO, if of course we want to 'stay in touch' with BOURNEMOUTH.

Not CHELSEA - by the way.

Im not fussed about this. We have 3 of the best centre halves in the division with Clarke as back up. Why pay wages we dont need to?

Andy32, that's the idea of the forum, you cast your opinion and others agree or disagree. Its good to see how we all view different situations and stories.

Sure a decent club will snap St Ledger up... Guess he wishes to play more regular.

Not sure about this strategy. Defensive injuries and suspensions have been high in recent weeks, so having just 5 recognised SENIOR defenders is very risky. Two out at once and we could be in trouble. We have an excellent chance of promotion. Hoping the lack of defensive and striking options will be addressed so it doesn't prove our undoing.

Blueboy, I wouldn't want you as my chairman. 'Goal post mover' springs to mind!!!

The reason some of you get minuses is that you make statements, not give opinions. It seems churlish to knock Mick at the moment as virtually every decision he has made this season has gone our way. One poster said we need experience now, not youth, so it was a bad move to blood Teddy Bishop? I could give other examples where some 'opinions' are flawed. As several have said, MM lives this every day and knows better than we experts

50yearsablue .............. some of you COMPLETELY miss the point for whatever reason ..... Was we in 2nd place in the Championship when we blooded BISHOP ???? ..... NO.

Therefore a totally different situation in terms of 'blooding' youngsters with little or no experience, with the bar where it NOW is.

Stetement ? .... YES. Very much so.

Trust in Mick everyone. No reason Matt Clarke cant step in and do a good job when needed - Mick and TC see him training every day with the first team and obviously believe he is ready to step in when needed. Butcher, Beattie, Bramble, Cranson, Whelan all managed to very successfully.

warktheline ............ you wouldn't be working under me for sure, so no worries there. We'd spend far too much time 'resting on laurels' instead of moving on. The 'laurel level' for you and I would NEVER match.

50yearsablue added 17:07 - Dec 29
Totally disagree Blueboy. It is much easier to blood someone into a team that's 2nd, on a great run and with confidence sky high

Andy32Cracknell added 17:10 - Dec 29
If you read between the lines the only reason we are trying to blood the youngsters is to gain cat 1 as that is what the club failed on. I wudnt be surprised if you asked MM he would prefer to have the more experienced player available to him

50yearsablue ......... if you have been following the game as long as your indication - you should know better by now. Quite laughable really.

In 50yearsblue defence i can remember the fans panicking about David Linighan getting injured in our d2 promotion season and a young Phil Whelan came into the back 4 and scored on his debut at roots hall against Southend (and we won the game). However, that was in the days of black n white tv's and typewriters lol.

......... what really concerns me is when I first started following ITFC, and supporting financially may I add, in 1964, the desire and expectancy of supporters for the Club to be successful was quite intense - this is an essential attribute for any potentially successful Club to have. This was the 'norm' for many more seasons than I care to remember

Now, it seems, we have an awfully high percentage of Supporters who will 'enjoy success if it comes, but 'so what' if it doesn't ' - as their acceptable objective.

Our core support has certainly changed over the years. Maybe reflected in the years we've spent in the Championship !!! .

We're in a potential PREMIERSHIP place - let's go for it - maybe sometime before we are that close again.

MM is not daft, he is a shrewd man. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't reveal another gem in the transfer window. Currently sitting in 2nd, he wouldn't jeopardise the squad by depleting it, obviously MM doesnt think St Ledger is good enough. In Mick I trust, COYB!!

That time of the month ladies...?

Wow, so there's another star coming through in Matt Clarke. I haven't seen him but we seem to be producing great prospects every six months at the moment. Next seasons 'one to watch' for the Premiership scouts maybe?!? Hopefully him and others coming through will be Premiership players without worrying about scouts...

Blueboy, you couldn't handle my positivity around you all day. Let's be frank, most of what I've said to you ,regarding the direction our club was going in ,when Mick's tenure started ,have blossomed. I think at this point in time, really you should be holding your hands up, and admitting you've been wrong most of the time. Many on here, have already done so, others have disappeared, never to be heard of again...but you still look for any slight crack that might, or might not appear.
All hail the MIGHTY MICK McCARTHY.
COYB.

Andy, i think that is the point of the minus button.

Blueboy has Mick not so far defied your expectations for the season by a colossal margin? Now it might all go PeteTong yet but so long as we remain in the top 6 that is so far above your expectation that you ought to be ecstatic be we 2nd or 6th. Either way does Mick not warrent the benifit of even your doubt by now. Its the constant doom mongering that grstes, not the opinion but the fact that you seize upon every opportunity that offers a negative point to be made. In this instance your post suggests that the loss of a player who has not played a game for us is going to be the end of the world! Just like an away draw after 4 on the bounce qas the end if the world the other week, And all that before we even know what the plan for Jan is. Mick prefers Clarke, fair enough. Lets face it you would have said the same about Teddy Bishop earlier in the season. The worst part of it all is on days like this you sound like Cyril Baker on the edp site, which is just depressing.

I would add blueboy that nobody would be working under you long. Your trigger finger is so itchy that we would have gone through more mangers than leeds this season. A bit of patience and sometimes dosnt go a miss

Maybe it was ST Ledger who has ended it with the transfer window coming up and not being offered a long term deal.

lonelyblue added 18:16 - Dec 29
The reason people mark you down, blueboy, is because you come across as being so very, very negative. It's exhausting to read you. If MM wants to show faith in a player, I think he's earned our trust to do just that. And I can't believe that anybody is making a big fuss about somebody who's never played for Town not being retained.
Next time: bring back Taylor, Wordsworth and JET, that McCarthy's a clown!
