Gerken Signs New Contract
Thursday, 8th Jan 2015 14:31

Town keeper Dean Gerken has signed a new contract which will keep him at Portman Road until June 2017 with an option for a further season.

Gerken, 29, joined the Blues in the summer of 2013 after a trial, having been released by Bristol City.

Last season he was Town’s established number one but has lost his place to Bartosz Bialkowski in recent months.

The Rochford-born ex-Colchester glovesman has made 57 appearances for the Blues.

I'm pleased for Gerken but am surprised. Clearly an ample back up at Championship level, but if we get promoted and it's a big if, I wonder if he is going to be good enough. That said he provably deserves a new deal ... I just wish he would leave his line!

Here's a thought, let's look at it this way, a player who is currently out of the team and not looking likely to oust the current number one anytime soon, commits for another 2 years when he could be seeking out first team football elsewhere! If anybody was unsure of the spirit among this current squad and the commitment, this is a great measure of that! Good news all round, generally a very good keeper and largely why Bart is playing so well as he is being pushed hard for that shirt I believe.

Hate to think what some of you on here are going to say when Bart costs us points ( it will happen as it does to all keeppers ) .
