Town Confirm Varney Loan Friday, 20th Feb 2015 11:11
Town have confirmed the signing of Blackburn striker Luke Varney on a one-month loan with an agreement in place for him to remain at Portman Road for the remainder of the season. Paperwork permitting, the 32-year-old is set to go straight into the squad for Saturday’s home game against Reading.
Varney, who has been handed the number 15 shirt, comes in as a direct replacement for Noel Hunt, who has now been ruled out for up to 12 weeks with a knee injury, while David McGoldrick has missed the last two matches with a thigh problem.
“It’s a big blow for us and obviously a big disappointment for Noel as well,” manager Mick McCarthy told the club site.
“He’s been great around the place and he’s made his mark on the pitch as well. We’ll look after him and we wish him a quick recovery.
“Luke is an experienced striker who knows what the Championship is all about, as well as playing in the Premier League and he fits in with what we are looking for in a player. We’re delighted to have him here.”
The striker, who if the loan is extended will be available to the Blues in the play-offs if required, was close to a move to Millwall prior to the transfer window closing, while Brighton and Sheffield Wednesday also understood to have shown interest.
"I’d had a couple of clubs interested in me but to be honest, once I’d heard of Ipswich’s interest there was only one place I wanted to go to,” he told the club site.
“The lads are flying right now and to be involved with a club that’s right in the mix with a manager such as Mick McCarthy at the helm, it was something that really interested me.
“I had a good chat with the gaffer who has told me I’ll be given the chance to play and help the strikers we already have at the club.
“The boys have been fantastic so far this season and if I can use my experience and help in any way, then brilliant.
“The gaffer has made me feel wanted and that’s all I’ve wanted. I had a difficult spell at Blackburn but I’m looking forward to this challenge.
“Already the lads have made me feel part of it and that’s all I’ve wanted really. I’m excited to pull on the Ipswich shirt and help the lads continue to push for promotion.”
Varney started his career with Crewe and has subsequently had spells with Charlton, Derby, Sheffield Wednesday, Blackpool, Portsmouth and Leeds before joining Rovers on a one-year deal in the summer following a loan at the end of last season.
The Leicester-born 5ft 11in tall striker has made only one start - in the Capital One Cup in August - and 13 sub appearances during 2014/15.

I laughed at my Palace mate when they signed Delaney .. They loved him ! ! All about opinions and also how you much you buy em for ! eg Paul Taylor , lee Martin etc - NOT GOOD RETURN ON INVESTMENT . This squad as an ROI business model - would be top by a mile ...
Jas0999 - of course we would like a striker with a decent scoring record but where are we going to find one of those at this stage of the season? If he is scoring then the club won't release and if he did sign he would only be sitting on the bench so not a particularly attractive proposition for the player. Give the guy a chance - good luck Luke.
Wish him all the best while he is here...wouldn't be my choice either but it's time for everybody including all the supporters to pull together as we head towards the crucial period of the season. Now that's Noel Hunt's replacement done, lets get that QUALITY emergency signing in!
I remember some commentmoaning about Murphy when we first went for him that he was wasn't a goal scorer but was a hard worker. Now look at him. Get the right player in right atmosphere and they will do wonders
Sorry bluehearts, sorry I misread, you mean ROI Return On Investment business model. When I read it I thought of another country :)) Welcome Luke, have a cracking debut, a goal coming off the bench is just fine.
our fans are sometimes a bunch of w*****s. give the lad a chance u misserable gits. if you cant trust mick and tc by now then go support someone else. enjoy your life half empty so called fans, i feel sorry for you.
He is a very experienced stiker that MM has drafted in at short notice to back up our first team strikers. Well done MM. I cant see any negativity in this at all
You can bet your life Varney will be out to prove a point if he gets on!
Before everyone jumps off the deep end with negative stories, I remember when we signed McGoldrick that my Forest mate couldn't stop laughing as he'd hardly scored a goal there and was nicknamed McGoaldrought. Not laughing now is he? He was also very critical when we signed Chambers. So let's do MM & TC a favour and let them work on these boys before we judge - you'd think we would have learned from the past. They'll get more right than they get wrong

We are having to pay Paul Taylors wages... So bloody well don't be so stubborn and play him. Can anyone honestly say he has had a bad game when he has played. Why waste time and money on the likes of Varney when we have a better player at the club. I don't give a monkeys what he does off the pitch as long as he gets us promoted
