McCarthy: Important for Bosses to Be Single-Minded Friday, 20th Mar 2015 10:27 Boss Mick McCarthy says it’s important for a manager to remain single-minded and not allow themselves to be swayed by other people’s opinions.
McCarthy stuck with his usual back four for Tuesday’s 1-0 home victory over Bolton, despite calls for him to make a switch.
“Strangely enough I get fairly well paid to do this job and I’ve done it over 23 years and I also get trusted with it in terms of running a team because I’d like to think I’m half-decent at it over that period,” he said.
“I’ve got TC in my office and he’s my trusted lieutenant and I bounce things off him. As for everybody else, if I form a committee to design a horse, that’s how you get the camel.
“So I’m not keen on taking any notice of what people say because if I asked you all in here for a team you’d all give me a different one and you’d all give me a different opinion on why you’d do it.
“You have to be single-minded, you have to trust in what you do, the way you do it and have belief in it.”
He says he chats with his assistant Terry Connor all the time: "I speak to TC every single day, he’s in my office with me. I discuss things, things I might consider doing and ask him his opinion, of course I do.
“Mine is the final decision, always. But he’s a very good coach and is somebody I trust and what I do trust and like about him is that he doesn’t just say yes.
“He would give his opinion and rightfully so because of his experience. We’ve worked together for a long time and I value his opinion and his input.
“He wouldn’t just concur with me, not at all. And likewise on the sidelines. Two heads are better than one, so long as one of them’s making the final decision.”

Bohslegend if you only get to 4 or 5 games a season you dont see it as much as fans like me who go week in week out. At the moment theres nothing worse than 2 oclock on a Saturday when we're all in the pub and the team sheet comes through and theres a collective groan cus we know its gona be another 90 minute trudge through quick sand with a lot of hoofing and no width and a defender whos confidence is in bits but isnt being removed from the firing line out of pure pig headedness. Pre Christmas it was great we knew we were going to go at teams and not try and grind away for points. I tell you know if he persists with this back 4 and 4-4-2 we will not make the play offs and deep down you and everybody else knows it.

"So let's trust his judgement ...." Bluebell preaches .... Hmmmm he is a football manager, not a bloody Guru or wannabe-Messiah of some spellbinding sect for crying out loud! :-) And while MM's "judgement" has been effective point-wise in the past, especially when ITFC avoided what looked like certain relegation in his 1st season here, the undeniable fact is that -- besides the football played under MM is most often DIRE to put it mildly! -- his "judgement" has been both poor point-wise and clearly not always working in the calendar year 2015, as also seen in the form-table where ITFC was 2nd from bottom until this midweeks's "robbery" as MM himself called it against Bolton. But it's no surprise that the more or less unconditional rosy-tinted "In Mick we trust" brigade here will not admit that this so called "judgement" of his -- i.e.which incl. his ultra stubbornness + ineptitude when it comes to starting XI, substitutions and of course overall tactical approach! -- has been costly flawed most of 2015. However MM did finally change some things for the better in the 2nd half against Bolton, and thus let's all hope even he too has seen the light NOW :-) .... cause there is indeed still time for him personally to make up for his "judgement" mistakes this year .... and certainly also time for ITFC to catch a play-off spot. No debating this! Watford might be rolling but I have a little gut-feeling we have their "number" so speak .... and might steal all 3, but probably not in a particular pretty way. But were it to happen I think fans could live with that just ONE more time. :-)

This time last year we were 9th shortly to rise up to 8th after beating Derby on 25th March;so not that much progress has been made in the past year despite the hype.

@seasider - if you look at the current standings your correct! - a lot of progress WAS made before xmas but what's the point if it unravels at the most important time of the season? Lose today and it will be a struggle for the play-offs in my opinion.
