Varney Undergoing Surgery
Monday, 11th May 2015 17:09

Striker Luke Varney is undergoing surgery today having suffered a ruptured achilles during Saturday’s 1-1 Championship play-off semi-final first leg draw with Norwich City at Portman Road.

Varney, who is on loan with the Blues from Blackburn, was stretchered off in the 31st minute of the match.

Speaking immediately after the game manager Mick McCarthy said: “It’s a big blow for him and I haven’t got a player for next week and maybe for Wembley, who knows.

“It’s such a big blow for him. I’m so disappointed for him. You see any player do that, but a lad like him, it’s really disappointing.”

He added: “He’s been wonderful, he’s been a breath of fresh air coming in. He, like all the loanees, has really contributed. He’s just such a great guy, we’ll have to look after him and make sure he’s OK.”

The 32-year-old, who is out of contract at Ewood Park in the summer, joined the Blues in February and has made six starts and five sub appearances, scoring once.

I often wonder why we seem to put so much water down. several players (both teams) were having problems staying on their feet. particularly toward the north stand (I appreciate Reg went down a lot further back). I was surprised they put down even more water at half time. Hope for a speedy and full recovery Reg..

Pitches in May are rock hard unless watered to take a stud.

He turned out to be a very good loanee who I hoped would have been with us for longer, best of luck with the surgery Luke and for a quick recovery, it was great watching you, you gave us an alternative option.
Come on lads, lets do it at carrot road on Saturday.

Really like Varney, he's a real McCarthy player, always gives his all - I hope he makes a speedy recovery and that we offer him a contract of some sort, (regardless of league) as he can certainly do a job for us!

Sadly it's an injury that typically takes over a year to recover. He's 32 and he could be 34 by the time he's fully fit. I sadly doubt that he'll be able to play at this level again, he might have another season in a lower division but I doubt if there will be more than that. Perhaps he'll start his coaching career while recovering and then maybe get in a few games before hanging up his boots. I guess it all depends on his ambitions and the results of his surgery.

So sorry Luk, that was lousy luck whilst you were giving your all for us. Really appreciate your contributions, hope you make full and relatively quick recovery, and are back playing for us next year :))

This is a horrible injury and I wish him a speedy recovery I am am old fart in my 50s and had the same injury 3 years ago, it took me 9 months to get back to full fitness and playing sport again so hopefully he will be able to continue his career

Hope Luke makes a speedy recovery. He's really grown into the team and is a decent person, as well. Would be great to have him back and also to hear Mick McCarthy say 'Reg Varney' - just cracked me up.
