McCarthy Expecting Quiet January
Friday, 8th Jan 2016 09:37

Mick McCarthy has reiterated that the January transfer window is likely to pass quietly at Portman Road with the Blues boss happy with his squad.

Speaking in Sky Sports’ FL72 podcast, he said: "We are not splashing out loads of money. I have spent about £500,000 in three years, and Jonas Knudsen was around £325,000 of that.

"If we are dealing in free transfers or loans I am not convinced I can get anything better than what I have got, because I have got a really good squad, put together for a minimum amount, and we are sixth in the league.

"Unless you are going to spend £3.5 million then that's something different, but we are not going to do that, so we will continue with our policy and see where we end up."

Regarding his plans for Saturday’s third round FA Cup tie at home to Portsmouth, he added: "There will be a few changes, but it will still be first-team players, I am not going to the youth team.

"It will be some of the squad players who haven't been playing because we have won seven in 11 and they can't get in the team. Some of them need games and they are good players too.

"Portsmouth are a good side, you can see that with the results in their league, and they have a nice way of playing.”

In reality we are not good enough to go up without investment.

If heaven forbid we got a serious injury to smurf or Freddie that would be it.

Remember sensible investment can get you up ( Marcus Stewart, David Johnson) and as the owner messed up last year and failed to do anything, Freddie excepted, he has another golden opportunity now.

For me its Nakki Wells or Nicky Msaynard----you go up by scoring goals and more goals.

If we do nothing I will be bitterly dissapointed with the position we are now in, but not surprised!!

There's actually a really important discussion happening on this thread, between reasonable and well-meaning genuine supporters, despite some unnecessary comments.
I can agree with a number of points made by posters who appear to be in disagreement, but probably are not that far apart in reality. They may just have a different understanding of how clubs are run/financed and how debt is structured in the corporate world by someone like Marcus Evans with group company board members, shareholders etc. to answer to.
I certainly can't pretend to speak with any authority on how business functions at that level. What I can give though, is my opinion on what is in the best interest of the club from a footballing perspective, which if valid will have a positive impact on the financial position of the club through greater success, higher attendances and profits from player sales. I'm no different than any other supporter in that respect; I make some great calls and I make some pretty bad ones too - I thought Velice Å umulikoski was going to be a sensational signing for us!
In our current financial circumstances, I don't expect us to go out & spend £4m+ on a new player like Derby, Middlesbrough etc. are doing, but I really do think, given the buffer that the Mings, Cresswell, and even Wickham sales gave us, that we can justify 'gambling' a little on bringing in the one or two players that would make us promotion material, bearing in mind how close we are to goldmine that is the Premiership. Knowing how good a judge of player & character that Mick is, a transfer budget (not including wages) of £2m for 2 or 3 players does not appear to be a massive risk. He is likely to be able to sell them on, without loss of value, in 18 months if we don't go up this May or next.
Marcus Evans, to his credit, showed his ambition and gambling instinct when he bought the club and made serious funds available for transfers. Unfortunately he let the wrong man (Keane in particular) waste it recklessly. Now is the time to release just a fraction of that amount to a manager who will give him value for money.
