Winger Oar Departs at His Own Request
Friday, 22nd Jan 2016 15:46

Town have announced that they have “reluctantly” agreed to terminate winger Tommy Oar’s contract at his own request, the Australian international having failed to settle in England.

Oar, 24, joined the Blues in August, siging a two-year deal, having left Dutch Eredivisie side FC Utrecht at the end of last season.

He made four Town starts - one in the league - and five sub appearances, scoring his only goal in the FA Cup tie against Portsmouth at Portman Road.

“I’d like to thank Ipswich Town for their co-operation over ending my contract,” Oar told the club site.

“It’s a great club and the manager, staff and players made me feel very welcome but while I have enjoyed playing for Ipswich, I have found it difficult to settle into life in England.

“I have been away from home for five or six years now. My family came over at Christmas and maybe I’ve got to a point where I want to be closer to home again.

“It’s just one of those things where moving over here as not worked out as I had hoped but I’d like to wish the club, the manager, the staff and the players the best of luck over the rest of the season and I hope to be watching Ipswich in the Premier League next year.”

Boss Mick McCarthy added: “Tommy came to see me and said that he hadn’t settled in England and asked if it was possible to end his contract.

“It’s disappointing obviously as we had high hopes for him. He had shown great quality in training but I don’t want to keep a player at the club who doesn’t want to be here. We wish him well.”

McCarthy could look to add another winger to his squad as back-up to Ryan Fraser and Freddie Sears, although he already has the likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Larsen Touré and Jay Tabb in his squad who play wide roles.

Meanwhile, former Blues loanee Jonny Williams has joined the MK Dons on a 93-day loan.

Wow, a lot of positive news coming out of the club in the last few weeks. Not sure what better player than we have got would want to come into the club but only play if we wan't to throw a cup game or a favourite is injured. Maybe a few players are starting to feel like a few fans. Squads starting to look a bit empty now, if you take away the ones that aren't good enough to start a game.

Perhaps he fancies going to a club with a bit of ambition

Transfer window open in Australia....melbourne city have let go Koren as one of their marquee and a few other clubs have freed up spots on list with mutual terminations....my guess is he has sourced a club here and looking for games with Asian cup on its way.

Key thing here for me was this: "Meanwhile, former Blues loanee Jonny Williams has joined the MK Dons on a 93-day loan." Really? We should have got him.

Really shocked by this to be honest. He was really starting to look sharp and Oar and Bialkowski were the stand out players at Portsmouth. Not good news at all.

The PR spin is never the true story. Those that are saying "here come the conspiracy theories" are failing to see that this isn't the complete picture.

Personally gutted that our 2 best back up players (parr and oar) have left the club.

Well done Tommy Oar. Stood up for what you believe in. I have it on good authority that Oar left after a fall out. Not due to home sickness. That's the truth, like it or not.

Shame to see Tommy Oar leave, I thought that he was being groomed to be a natural Town owned player ready for next year, when our loanees, Fraser and AMN return to their parent clubs. Perhaps we could sign Fraser on a permanent deal? AMN doesn't seem to like the cold weather and has lost his spark.

Not good news.
Oar is a quality player and could easily have been a first-teamer.
He has played well as an over-lapping left-back before and so is disappointing he wasn't even given a chance in that position at town.

I would say this has more to do with ream selection Tuesday than homesickness

Another good player gone to MM favorite picking ,shame a good player in the right position same as Jonny Parr a better left back than Knudsen like Oar is a better winger than Sears but Mc Carthy will not play players in there rightful positions we are getting weaker while others get stronger i am afraid.

Why are people saying a good player has gone ? Not exactly been ripping it u21 level from the reports i have read ! And the first team games he has played not done alot maybe after the pompey game when he didn't make much of impression against a league 2 side he probably thought his best bet to get a game was the very weak A league . Any player who is going to come close to making should be earning rave reviews in u21 and nobody has come in to take him on loan either think that says something about the player rather than management as some have been insinuating
