McCarthy to Talk to Thomas But Quiet Deadline Day at Town
Monday, 1st Feb 2016 13:46

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he’ll speak to trialist Jerome Thomas about his situation but that deal is unlikely to be done on what’s almost certain to be another very quiet deadline day at Portman Road. McCarthy says he’s not sure he could have found the players to strengthen his side, although revealed he had made one or two enquiries regarding some younger players.

As TWTD revealed on Wednesday, Thomas, 32, has been training with the Blues having been released by Crystal Palace last summer and McCarthy says he’ll talk to the ex-Arsenal, Charlton and West Brom winger in the days to come.

Thomas played in Friday’s behind closed doors friendly against Southend, which ended in a 1-1 draw, but isn’t involved in this afternoon’s U21s game against QPR.

“I’ve got to speak to him and, of course, he’s a free agent so he can sign at any stage, there’s no great hurry in terms of today,” McCarthy said.

“It’s not one where I’ve been looking at him for a little while. I actually had him in the building at Wolves and was going to sign him and he got a better deal down at West Bromwich Albion. But I’m not holding that against him, quite clearly, I’ve had a look at him again.

“He’s a very talented player but he’s not played for quite a while. But, like I said, it doesn’t have to be done today.”

Asked whether he was disappointed not to have strengthened his squad during January, he added: “I’m not sure I could have done. Yes, I could go and get somebody different, but I’m not sure I could go and get anybody better, who would come and replace what I would say is my first team.

“I could go and get somebody else, whether they're better than what I’ve got with the budget that I would have to pay for players, for loan deals, for wages.

“We’ve had a look at a number of younger ones that I’ve talked about, we’ve enquired about, but they’re non-starters really in terms of the money.

“It’s always nice to bring somebody in, it might freshen you up for a couple of weeks, but if they’re better than what I’ve got then I’d have had to spend a fair chunk of money and I don’t believe in just bringing players in for the sake of them.

“And I’ve got two players for every position. I said previously, before the 11 o’clock bell rings, I’m happy with my squad, I’m delighted with them.”

He added: “I’d have to go out and pay a lot of money to get better than what I’ve got and I don’t think that’s going to be the case. I’m happy.

“I’ve not been looking, not too much, because there’s no point in me saying I’m happy and then behind closed doors scrolling through all these players thinking ‘I might get something else’. No, I’m pleased, the lads are great.”

The Blues boss confirmed he’d still like to get youngsters such as Josh Emmanuel, Myles Kenlock and Adam McDonnell out on loan, but says that’s now more likely to happen once the emergency loan window opens next week.

U21s: Marsden, Emmanuel, Morphew, Robinson, Kenlock, Guldbrandsen, McDonnell, Hammond, McKendry, Ford, McLoughlin. Subs: Wright, C Smith, Blanchfield, Meldrum, Ramadan.

Oh please FO with the same old rubbish, there is miles better whether it costs money or via loans, surely being close to the promised land is worth the expenditure.

Same old, same old....like many others, why is it that we supposedly have money to spend, yet MM is totally happy with what we have i.e. backup made from cast offs/freebies who performed so poorly in the cup. Would be a miracle if we make the playoffs imo, with all the others around us strengthening

Who do you suggest we sign cart man? Or just moaning for the sake of it?

Same stuff again, how many times can he say he cant get better. It gets more frustrating every time because its still a load of rubbish! If we couldn't get better then we would be 1st! Simple as that. There are less than a handful of our squad that would get in the teams above us which clearly shows we can get better! We have been conceding goals far to easily at the back and we dont have anyone who is fit or our own player who wants to play the ball on the floor, okay maybe sears and bru, but we can get better and he knows it! We have fallen away from the other teams again just like last year! While they get players in we stand still and that unfortunately makes us weaker. I fear that for what happened last year as we have made the same mistake again. Ofcourse I wish the squad well and will be supporting at every game, but to say we cant get better really is just a lie!

Marcus Evans PLC. Miles away form being owners of a Premier League club at this rate. Paper thin squads don't go up.

If you can't find a better left back than time to call it a day and that's before we get into keepers, right back and goal scoring midfielders.

No quality signings, No one to push MMs favourites into playing with more passion so basically no ambition! Premiership? No thanks I'm comfortable here in the Championship thank you very much

Yes Mick the lads might be "A great bunch" but really the team is probably weaker than it was last season, losing good fringe players only to replace them with Digny and foley. Also not adding a real first team player while all the teams around us have added in a strong signing or two.

I like mick, I understand we have issues with the budget, but we have got no ambition here to push on. He's too loyal with the players we already have. I hope i'm wrong but with our poor strength in depth and with teams around adding good first team players I fear we wont even make the play offs. I hope i'm wrong.

but I'm not sure I could go and get anybody better, who would come and replace what I would say is my first team. Then lets replace the 2nd 11 who were sh1te in the matches against Portsmouth.

I'm sorry mick but if you're honestly saying that you couldn't have gone an found a midfielder better than Douglas it's about time you stepped away from the dugout and If you cannot see the huge gaping hole in the middle of our team then I'm genuinely worried now. Everyone complains about hoofball if we had someone creative who actually wanted the ball to play forward from the middle that would stop!!! And Jonny williams has gone to MK Dons ...sorry am I missing something here???

Even Europe's top clubs can get better. That's why the transfer market exists. Not just in football but in every walk of life, things can get better.
MM won't get new faces in just in case they do improve the team and we do get promotion. Why risk a 2 year deal with possibly 2 more years by getting sacked through being a Premier League failure (again!!). No, much better to keep bobbing along just outside the top two places, keeping those fans who think he is so marvellous happy that we are challenging despite the fact that we are facing possibly 4 more years of boring hoof ball. He has a good wage guaranteed, no hassle from ME while we long suffering fans continue to turn up to watch the supposed best players he can get making no attempt to play football.

Oh well, here's to another 2, probably 4, years of mid table hoofball obscurity. Just nothing to get excited about at all.

Witchesaswell added 14:13 - Feb 1
How the hell can MM be delighted with the inconsistent squad he has at the moment ?

We need quality in all areas of the pitch and while other teams are out strengthening we will sit and stagnate in mid table if we're lucky.

To me it just beggars belief, there's appears to be no genuine desire to reach the promised land of the Premiership.

I am one very disillusioned lifetime supporter right now!

Oh well Mick if you're happy and confident with your squad who am I to doubt? The proof will be seen in May I guess. COYBs

Maybe MM convinced ME to use all money on his and TC contract !,I am hoping we will unveil a new attacking mid and striker at least today , if not I am so interested in hearing the rationale
a)no money ? But enough to get MM and nice longer contract?
b)we have a good enough squad ? Really?- no Bishop and DIds till when ??and lost Oar and Parr
So to me we have a weaker squad
We do need to add
We do not have a creative midfielder so that would be a start !
Let us see ? Moncur perhaps
With a network of scouts you would think they may have found at least afew worth looking at ?
Needham Market , ex Wolf and Barnsley reject so far ?
Oh and a player who in 14 years played 240 times and not been playing for some time
Teams can always improve , if they want to progress

Well I guess its different than last year as we got the excellent Freddie in and this year we have immeasurably weakened the squad.. I guess MM thinks Town supporters are mushrooms as I feel we are kept in the dark and fed bullsh*t.

oldelsworthyfan added 14:32 - Feb 1
We should all know that the January transfer window is not a good time to recruit decent players (as Derby will tell you).

Maybe MM will try for some loanees in the coming weeks, but the best time to strengthen the squad is in the summer. Maybe Moncur then?

Scuzzer added 14:32 - Feb 1
So...it really is all about the money. Now getting to the point when we cant even afford loanees' wages. Our squad has got stale very quickly this season and really does need freshening up. This has not been a very happy season for me and things on and off the pitch is making me question really strongly whether to commit to another season ticket next season. Spend my money, which they try to squeeze every penny out of me, on something a bit more worthwhile. Makes me sad.

ITFCGloryDays added 14:34 - Feb 1
It's a same tune thats always now played and it's becoming monotonous and boring...we can always do better and to say we can't, well, it just beggars the ambition and the true intent of those who run ITFC. We are, with regret, an accepting mid-table championship table team, with no desire to go higher.

BigAlsMate added 14:36 - Feb 1
Personally I think it is more a case of Evans not willing to spend any more on the squad and Mick Mcarthy has to like it or look for another club! Get used to it people we are facing another few seasons in this division, unless we start cashing in on our better players in which case it could come down to fighting relegation. Promotion soon? Forget it!! I am more bothered that Evans may walk away, and knowing him I believe he would want to see every penny who has put into the club returned. That would leave in very dire straights, either looking for a very rich Russian to buy us or being in a worse position that Bolton!! Hey ho, it must be the happy season! COYB

Totally agree with those who suggested Williams and Moncur. I can't help but think of what could have been. Parr should have been playing regularly in one of the full back positions. Bru could have partnered Skuse with Williams ahead of him. There is no way he would have chosen MK Dons over us, why wasn't an approach made for him? Apart from the fact he has great ability as an attacking midielder, he also works hard and seemed to fit in with the squad perfectly.

Williams would have been the missing link or final piece of the jigsaw in my opinion. The defence is usually decent, although keeping Parr would have made us very solid. I won't ignite the keeper debate. Skuse is solid at what he does, ditto Bru, while Murphy, Sears and Fraser are very good at this level, they just needs a 'fulcrum' or a spark if you like. Somebody who catalyses a move from deep with a daring run or a through ball. That man now plays a club fighting relegation when he should have been at the other end of the table chasing a play off place.
