McCarthy: Knudsen Has Got Better and Better
Tuesday, 26th Apr 2016 08:58

Town boss Mick McCarthy says left-back Jonas Knudsen has got better and better as the season has progressed and was delighted to see him net his first Town goal late in last week’s 1-1 draw with Fulham.

“I was delighted considering the circumstances, it was great,” he said of the Danish international. “Jonas has had a really good season.

“Jonas has been a really good signing. Considering we took £8 million in [for Tyrone Mings from AFC Bournemouth] and signed him for £300,000 [from Esbjerg Fb] that’s a pretty good deal that for me.

“He’s got better and better, he’s learning about the league, he’s a great character, a great pro.

“He has been getting closer [to a goal] and it’s been a good first season for him. He’ll get better now.

“It’s no surprise to me [that he’s done well] because of his personality. He’s a tough nut, he’s a winner, he competes like that in training. He’s great.”

Knudsen has made 42 starts for the Blues this season and was recently called into the full Danish squad for the first time since his move to England but didn't add to his two previous caps.

If I recall Mings only got a game in the first place because the club sold Cresswell off for cheap. So 8 million for Mings is offset by what we lost on the sale of Cresswell which should have been significantly more. I doubt Mick was the one who went out and scouted Mings from Chippenham. It was hardly a big gamble purchase at 10k! Your making him sound like a transfer market messiah. Yet his recent squad additions have left a lot to be desired. Overall I just find Mick's brand of football boring. If hoofball gets you on the edge of your seat then eat your heart out. Please enjoy it while it lasts. And where are all these other diamonds Mick is spoiling us with? Do you count ExSkuse and Douglas as diamonds?

You're right Midas, it wasn't MM who scouted Mings. He was spotted by Russell Osman.

Thank you Armchair. Long live Russell Osman, legend defender! :-) What we'd do for him right now!

I wasn't impressed at the start of the season. He cost us three or four goals in the first seven or eight games by simply standing off his man who then whipped in a cross that was converted.
He has come on leaps and bounds since then imo and in the last couple of months has probably been our best outfield player.
Hopefully he will continue his progress next year.
A right back in the same vein please Mick.

I don't think he's been that great at all. His amazing throw ins are laughable. We've probably been spoilt by having Cresswell and Mings in that position but he's no where near as good as either and it's no coincidence for me that we've shipped in more goals this season. Hopefully he's getting to grips with the league now and can kick on next season.

Knudsen not as good as Parr , no where near Mings standard and a world away from Cresswell simple as what ever rubbish MM says .Wouldn't get into any side above us challenging for promotion how ever you want to dress it up

Cudnt get much worse !!! He's gone from 3/10 to possibly 5/10. Still a very very average championship player at best and nowhere near good enough for a promotion chasing team !!! Has become one of the dinosaur's favourites though so will play no matter how terrible he is.

Michael11 ...''but he's no where near as good as either and it's no coincidence for me that we've shipped in more goals this season''
So how many of these goals are distinctly down to him? I think he was weak to start with and having actually seen Danish football I'm not surprised that he found the first part of the season difficult. I personally think he's developing well and certainly shows more passion than some.

I think next season will be a big one for Knudson. There is a half decent player lurking in there but he needs to become much more consistent.

Personally its the right back situation which bothers me more!

I agree, he has significantly improved in my opinion, deserving of his place. But let's make no mistake he isn't as good as Mings nor Creswell. Also considering we raked in £13M or so for the two, where has the rest of the money gone? It certainly hasn't been spent on just wages, whilst the running of the club isn't improving the squad.

If you look at the match ratings for Knudsen on this website he has only been awarded above 7 out of 10 twice and interestingly both were for games played in 2015 which doesn't imply a big dramatic improvement in the 2nd half of the season and doesn't appear to suggest most fans rate him particularly highly. Just saying.

More proof that Micks deluded. Sorry but he's a bang average fullback.
So many times he could have bombed on down the wing this season and just stands there like a statue.
When he does get forward his crossing is woeful.
Caught out of position countless times and is always falling over.
Cant fault his effort but he's not even as good as Parr who was shafted by MM cus he wasnt one of his "special boys"

Undoubtedly a potentially very good player in the making - not there quite yet - but well on the way to being so.

Will definitely make Championship grade, maybe more - don't be surprised if another Cresswell in the making - it's there to be seen.

Good signing McCarthy - has to be said.

I think defensively he is improving but as an attacking wing back or what he creates on the attacking side is way behind Cresswell and Mings also I wish he would stop those useless long throws which have too much trajectory and not enough pace on them.

Warkys_Tash added 23:30 - Apr 26
Not for me, not a player now & doubt he ever will be. No pace, can't cross, can't beat a man, no good going forward. Average at best going backwards.

Sorry Mick, but it appears you are trying to justify your record signing. Waste of money in my opinion when you think Cressy was bought for £450k. We were stupid to accept such a low bid from West Ham, their fans are still laughing at that price.

@Midas Touch, I am not sure what rock you crawled from under as I never even seen you post on here until today, then it's 50 all at once & you are way off the mark about JET.

However, I like your Cloughie vid, good work. What a miss that great man is in the world of footy.

Although, Ireland kept a clean sheet that day with clogger McCarthy at the back!

Cheers Warky. My keyboard is ready for an MOT & Service after today lol! I felt the need to put my 2 pence worth in! Many might not agree with me and that is fine. I welcome healthy debate. Although I have to say, the way this season has gone hasn't been very good for my health lol! :-)

Bit like the football we've been getting served up this season then, cheese!

& rather than merely commenting on the trivial matter of lols why not contribute in regard to the thread? What is your opinion off Knudsen as well as the current plight of the club? Please enlighten us with your profound wisdom.

On reflection, the overall opinion of Knudsen seems to be just about as mixed as the opinion of Mick! Well I've clearly more than said my piece so I'll butt out and let others have their say. I'm starting to sound like a broken record lol! Over and out...
Couldn't resist dropping in one final lol especially for my dear friend JoeDickerson420 (aka the cheese police).

" JET is the sort of player that the right manager could work wonders with. "

Well he had Wenger who described him as the best young player he'd ever had and even Wenger couldn't motivate " JET " to have any interest in footy! Seriously Midas, I understand the love of absolute class like Gio, but JET!? Sure one class game vs West Ham and walking around giving sod all back 9/10 games. You cannot carry players like that!

As for Cresswell sale, it was £3.75 mill upfront without other payments taking it to £6/£7 mill total I think ( sell on appearances caps etc ) so it's not quite so bad as often published.

As for Mings, we well and truly pulled Bournemouth's pants down. Quality going forward, but for people who criticise Knudsen's positioning, Tyrone was often every further out of position but he could slot back in. Mings' workrate tracking back wasn't always the best and he was very hot and cold too. Never got the hype.

As for Skuse, yes he doesn't excite bla bla bla but he's not there to! The first game we won without him in the side, was Huddersfield away this season in Skuse's entire time here. Speaks volumes. Very good player reads the game well.

Look at the midfield crap he's had around him, give him a good partner and two proper wide boys fit all season and people would absolutely love Skuse.
