Webster Fee Set to Be McCarthy's Biggest at Town
Friday, 20th May 2016 10:30

Portsmouth defender Adam Webster will reportedly cost the Blues more than £500,000 plus Matt Clarke, which would be the largest fee Town have spent on a player since Mick McCarthy took charge in November 2012. Yesterday, TWTD revealed that the Blues are close to making Webster their first addition of the summer.

According to the Portsmouth News Town will pay Pompey a fee “well in excess of £500,000” plus 19-year-old Clarke, who spent 2015/16 on loan at Fratton Park, for Webster, 21, who we understand was initially a Blues target in January.

If that figure is correct it surpasses the £350,000 paid to Danish side Esbjerg fB for left-back Jonas Knudsen last summer.

It’s understood that personal terms are still to be agreed but that the moves are expected to go through early next week without a problem.

Speaking in an interview in the match programme for the final home game of the season, owner Marcus Evans indicated that he would be willing to pay fees this summer if required.

Just noticed some joker called Chris Lakey from the EDPoo having a pop at Ipswich (no surprise there then!)...

Just a thought - a ball-playing defender who likes to play it out - maybe MM is thinking of him as the holding midfielder?

Good to see us spend a modest fee on a Mick target. It's a small step in the right direction. I'd have thought if we have spent a fee on a player it's likely he will feature in the starting eleven which presumably means either Smith or Berra move on. That would mean two out and one in. We need to address the midfield and bring in a top goal scoring central midfielder. That's where a fee is likely to be spent.

dav86andGerkensBeard.Presume neither of you rate Josh Emmanuel at Right Back,as apart from one game has looked good there.

Beattiesballbag.Exactly the defence I would like to see;but we don't pick the team,Mick does.

I get the impression that the criticism, and probably a good number not renewing their season tickets so far, have actually got through at last, although obviously wouldn't be admitted;especially by MM.

At least he is a young player a few more like him from the lower leagues and we may have more hunger.
Cant wait till next season i think things will be good. COYB

Webster and Smith at the heart of our defence next year is looking very promising!!

Agree HarryS_H, though it does look more likely now that Smith will no longer be at the club.

Also he never played in play offs injured. Him out and clarke injured is a big reason we r still in lg 2. Very good prospect and can only get better. Might need a bit of support early on as can overplay at times and might make a few mistakes as it is a step up ..... you have got a good un.

Ive said earlier in facup tie he was best player on pitch

Gerkensbeard...Chambers at right back? not for me i'm afraid, we urgently need a Proper right back. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, Chambers at right back remains a weakness.

With Chambers, Smith, Berra, Webster, Digby, Knudson, Foley, Emmanuel and Kenlock all hoping to start may be at at least 2 of them leave. Whoever stays i hope we play the best players in their correct position.
Two natural ball playing full backs at end of season made the game much more enjoyable to watch.
With Webster a footballing cb we may be in line for some proper ITFC style footie.

A man can dream!!

Good luck Webster and welcome when you sign

On the day of the FA Cup final, what a shame that this pleasure is denied by our manager, who doesn't giver any importance to it. His miserable record in play offs and cup tournaments is testimony to poor strategical and tactical capability. When Webster and Portsmouth came to Town in January, they totally outclassed us..very poor showing and very poor management skills. I for sure will not pay anymore to see Town in a cup match while we have McCarthy in charge..complete waste of money..

What a crazy manager we have a limited amount of money and he pays £500k on someone we don't need he might be brilliant I don't know but with Evans saying McCarthy can have a million and we need a some pace in the side and a striker and he buys a defender crazy.
McCarthy OUT

Hope we don't get compared with Palace if they win, in a similar way that we were compared with Leicester City. Gulf in class.

500K on a league 2 defender is a huge risk. Most Pompey fans seem to think he's a good player.

mccarthy_is_god - but look at the way we play, if you enjoy seeing the style we played against Rotherham and the like then your easily pleased. The dross I have witnessed this season has sent me into a comatose state at times.
We have an owner who has played by the financial rules imposed on clubs, some have ignored the rules and we still wait to see what if any sanctions get enforced against them. A growling dog with no teeth comes to mind.
I would like to see a much more balanced side next season, if the rumours that Berra is off to Rangers are true I won't be mourning his loss as I think McCarthy really unbalanced the side by bringing him in when Smith and Chambers seem to have got their centre back partnership together.
Initially playing Berra on the right seems to have started all this square pegs in round holes syndrome.
I can't see Chambers reverting to centre back with the new lad coming in because he is Mick's captain and will always play be it in the wrong position or will he stick the lad
at right back where so many have said is his weaker position, back to square pegs again.
But it's the midfield which concerns me most, how many seasons have gone by that we have needed a decent player in that position, it really beggars belief that it has not been addressed.

I hope and pray this is part of the master plan and that Berra will now be sold for about £1m (Celtic oerhaps?) so we will actually make money on the deal.

Then we need at least one hungry young striker and one creative midfield player (Freeman?) and with Didds and Bish hopefully back to full fitness that will be some side methinks.
