McCarthy: We'll Mix Up Style of Play
Wednesday, 20th Jul 2016 22:32 by Dave Gooderham

Mick McCarthy said his side would “mix it up” when it comes to Ipswich Town’s style of play this season after a Brett Pitman goal gave the Blues a 1-0 friendly win over Colchester United.

Pitman scored in the 39th minute after latching on to a long through ball by Paul Digby which cleared the Colchester defence.

McCarthy, who revealed the club remained in discussions with potential new signings, said: “We had loads of fans here and they want to see us win.

"I think they have seen us play some decent football, trying to develop it a bit better, because at the end of last season, it was annoying me a bit — I wasn’t enjoying it.

“But yet the goal we got was a ball stuck in behind. If you have space in the middle of the park and willing runners, you can’t stop doing that.

“Strangely enough their best chance was at the end of the game when they stuck one in behind us. You have to mix it up — you can’t be all one and you can’t be all the other.

“I screamed at Diggers just before, then low and behold he drops it in behind and we score. That’s where the run is. That’s not Neanderthal football, that’s clever football. That’s playing and creating space by making them drop off.”

While the style of Ipswich’s play remains a hot topic among fans, so does the lack of new signings — though Adam Webster played his first minutes in a Town shirt at the Weston Homes Stadium.

While revealing discussions were ongoing, McCarthy wasn’t exactly adamant he would be bringing in more recruits ahead of the season opener against Barnsley on August 6th.

He said: “Potentially there are a few loans, a few permanents, but we will see. We are in discussions with different people.

“There are some real big spenders in our league this year who are doing all the deals and there are a few of us beneath that who are trying to manufacture deals or maybe swaps or free transfers, if someone wants to get someone off the wage bill.

“That’s where we are at. If that’s the way it is, we will do it and we will do it well and I am sure we will rub a few wealthy noses in along the way.”

Speaking of the Colchester win, which saw Town claim the Alderton Trusler Cup, McCarthy added: “It’s a good win, no injuries and no knocks as far as I know. It’s nice to win and get a clean sheet. It means a lot to the fans and I still want to win.”

May I suggest all you so called supporters who do nothing but moan jog off and find something else to do I've been a town supporter for 40 years through thick and thin it has become a talking point of other supporters that we are getting fed up with all the moaning negative club trashing comments made by some mostly on this site.

It really is impossible for MM to do anything right in some people's eyes.

If we had good reason to be optimistic about the clubs fortunes under the present regime perhaps we would not moan, some are happy with mediocrity I for one am not. Even in the dark days of relegations and the financial problems I had hope of recovery. Surely we were in administration when ME bought us, and didn't another buyer decide not to attempt to buy the club because ME was in the due diligence phase of buying us. So saying ME was the only option is disingenuous.

Well you as the manager should do something about it, you get paid piles of money
We on the other hand pay piles to put up with it.
One more season for me, sadly, if it doesn't change and by de facto Dino walks, then that's me done.

Sotd78 the quote is nearly right, but in these days of FFPS we could spend the twent pounds and six and still be happy

For all you supporters who complain because some of us air our views is really quite farcical.Lets put this whole thing in perspective shall we.Firstly are we progressing as a club who wants to be in the Premiership.?Secondly do we have a team"At the moment" capable of getting into the Premiership.? Thirdly,do we have the full backing of the owner.?Forthly, why have we NOT signed any worthwhile players.and or,why do players we try to sign,or try to hold on to leave for another club.? Is it wages, the style of play,or something else.
These are some of the points we try to raise, then when we do we are called moaners.WHY.? Let's face it at the end of the day we all want what is best for our great club and the Premiership MUST be our aim.I fear we are a long way off from our goal, and for those of you are just happy to accept what we have at present just does not make sense.Knock me if you wish, but deep down you all know this is the truth.

Days from liquidation 😂 there have and will be clubs in far worse financial positions than we were in and they have never liquidised,

Im guessing you were also unhappy to see Jay Tabb go and feel he should have been captain

Looks like we are shopping at the 99p store again. All well and good, but Evans is very happy to charge fans Harrods prices. I for one don't expect Evans to spend ten million. But a couple of half million pound additions or modest fees is surely achievable.

Mullett....sorry I marked you down in error. However, I also see Seasider's point....MM is not displaying any sense of urgency at least to us.
I thought that the assist from Digby to Pittman was a measured and well weighted ball not to be confused with a hoof. Bobby Robson stated that the most effective ball is a long ball direct to a forward (provided it hits the target). Then he mixed it up by signing Muhren and Thjissen!

Regarding that Pitman goal against Little Colchester Utd (via a long ball)

Look where the goalie was, he raced yards outside his box! But Why?
Pitman had two defenders upside of him about 35 yards out, so no immediate need.

Really that goal was Gifted him by a crap decision by Walker racing out when should have waited inside his area and not presented him an unguarded goal

I'm struggling with some people on here. I have never commented before, but it winds me up listening to so called fans criticising every single thing Mick says or does. And before you ask, I am not a Mick lover, but I do love Ipswich. We have finished in or around the playoffs for 2 years. Whether you like Mick or not, that is an improvement on the last 7 or 8 years. We have a club full of players who want to play for Ipswich, who will run there hearts out for Mick and the club. We have no big time Charlies on a last pay packet before they retire. You were crying out for us to buy some young talent from lower leagues, we bought Webster. There may be more to come, who knows. But what we do know is the Club is £80 million in debt and runs at about a £6m loss a year. Why on earth would you spend more taking the club further into debt?! Madness. The club is run on a strict budget as a proper business should be. There is no guarantee to going up if we spend more. It's like saying I've got £1,000 credit card debt, I'm up to my limit, but if I go to the bookies and put £20 on a 50/1 shot I can clear my debts! Financial suicide!
Most on here have been saying give the youngsters a go. Well it looks like we will be, Dozzell, Blanchfield, Mcdonnell, Kenlock are all going to get game time, is this not what we wanted? If we sign another Douglas or Skuse is this going to block their chances? We have Bishop and hopefully McGoldrick back, that is like having 2 new signings, we finished 7th last year without our best 2 players all season.
I don't like the style of football we play, but I will back the man in charge of our club. I tell you, if the 16,000 who go every week at backed the players like the away fans do, that would be like a new signing. It's no coincidence our away record was better than home form in relative terms. Stop blaming people, stop looking for scapegoats, stop criticising Mick at every turn and back the team. Back it 100%, make PR a fortress again and we might just surprise ourselves even if the football is a bit dire.

" We have not made any progress whatsoever under MM."

Agreed.

When he took over we were -
* Bottom of the league
* Had a squad full of loan players
* Had idiots like JET and Taylor
* Players who had no interest in playing for us
* Happily getting hammered at times
* Going on sequences with no win in 10/11
* Not forming a spine of a club changing players left right and centre
* Being absolutely nowhere near challenging for the play offs or being in them

THAT POST of no progress received up arrows. I have to question what is wrong with many of the users on this website. Of course we have made progress under Mick. He's taken us the closest to promotion since Royle. Words fail me.....

unknown100 the liquidation line was from David Sheepshanks in an interview with the EADT and as far as Tabb is concerned I don't care wither way while any player weears my beloved shirt I support them 200% but once gone another player comes in and also gets my 200%
