McCarthy: McGoldrick is a Premier League Player
Friday, 4th Nov 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy believes striker David McGoldrick is one of the best players in the Championship, "a Premier League player", and is delighted to have the 28-year-old Republic of Ireland international available again after his latest injury setback.

McGoldrick smashed home his second goal of the season in only his second start of the campaign to grab a point in the dying seconds of last week’s 2-2 home draw with Rotherham United, having been out with an ankle injury sustained in the EFL Cup tie with Stevenage.

The former Nottingham Forest and Southampton man, who also spent time on loan with Saturday’s opponents Sheffield Wednesday earlier in his career, has endured a frustrating time with injuries in the last three seasons with knee, thigh and hamstring problems also having sidelined him.

“He’s one of the best players in the Championship, I think he’s a Premier League player, personally, in terms of his ability, his touch, his awareness, his passing range, his finishing,” McCarthy said.

“And it’s sad actually for all of us, but mainly for him, that he’s not been able to showcase those talents here.

“And if he had I think we would have had people knocking on the door trying to take him. That’ll be the case if he remains fit.”

McCarthy says any side would suffer having a player like McGoldrick, for whom Town turned down a bid of £7 million from Leicester City in the summer of 2014, unavailable for such long spells.

“Most people would miss him,” he said. “But there’s nothing you can do, it’s injuries, those are the challenges.

“And actually, if you consider that over the course of the last two seasons, we would have been better with him, but we’ve actually done all right without him as well.

“Maybe the difference would have been that we would have been in the top six and not seventh last year if Didzy had been fit that little bit extra.”

He says the return of McGoldrick and loanee Jonny Williams, who has also had an ankle injury, have enhanced training sessions at Playford Road.

“They add quality to it, there’s no doubt about that,” he continued. “Both of them have got that ability to beat somebody.

“Both have got that ability to find a subtle pass that not everybody can see, that you can’t coach. That’s a nice thing to have in the team.”

McCarthy believes the duo can make a difference and help Town to climb the table: “Well, they’re goalscorers or somebody that can find somebody or create something.

“I was asked [at the Supporters Club AGM] the other day, ‘What was the difference?’. Well, 27 goals [from Daryl Murphy] was the difference when we were finishing in the top six. And we’ve not had anywhere near that since.”

For a team in the bottom half of the championship & on a downward trajectory, we seem to have quite a few "premier league players "
Makes you wonder why results & performances haven't reflected this

Perhaps Man Utd will buy him for £80M then.
They could use a few 'Premier League players' right now...

The reason that he's not a premier league player is because teams will not pay him premier league wages to be injured most of the season. There is no doubt of his talent. However when your alleged star player is available for a maximum of half a season each year, where is the benefit to the club in that? Now he is fit it's like walking on eggshells wondering how long he will remain this way!

Unfortunately, because of his injury history there is no way any Prem club would pay high wages for him. That is good news for us but I have a feeling if a Championship team in the Midlands came for him he would go. His family are in Nottingham after all.

Hopefully we can keep him and he will remain fit. He certainly looked good against Rotherham. The problem I can see is defenders will target him knowing he is injury prone.

Great player when fit but would be a squad player at best for any premier league side . Like Runaround says with all these "premier league players ", and "best in their position in the league " why are we so low in the table ? Must be down to poor management of good players ?

Asked "Whats the difference " ... MM admits ...so the only reason we got in the playoffs was because Murphy had a one off season and luck , nothing to do with MMs inspired management or tactics which have seen us struggle since

Unbelievable!...according to MM the majority of our players are Prem quality, that just goes to show how poor your managing at the moment!

Micks dead right and the Out brigade need to acknowledge it - we would have made the playoffs Last season if McG and the Bush are fit.

'McGoldrick is a Premier League Player'. If that Premier League team was Derby in 2007/08.

Technically good

Lazy, slow, poor decision maker, constantly feels like he needs to make impact with every touch, loses the ball a lot, doesn't win headers, not particularly strong

Not a fan

Some interesting comments here. My view is that McCarthy is incapable of managing good players, particularly those with flair and vision - he does not have it himself so has to revert to all the cr@ap about every game being a scrap. Keane had his number all along.

But turning to McGoldrick - talent yes, but huge question mark about his commitment. Has virtually been missing ever since the rumour that Leicester wanted him - ok maybe mainly due to injury but there is a doubt.

I think he owes a massive debt to Town over all the months he has been on fully paid leave. That is why I am not impressed with his ROI call up. He has not been putting in shifts (you know who's words) for Town but his return often seems to co-incide with international call up time - just an observation
