McCarthy Explains Sub Decisions
Monday, 12th Dec 2016 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy has outlined why Jonny Williams wasn’t one of the players he introduced as a substitute during the second half of Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Cardiff City at Portman Road.

The Blues boss was already switching goalscorer Luke Varney and Grant Ward for Brett Pitman and Freddie Sears prior to Sol Bamba’s sending off, a swap which took place as the Bluebirds defender made his way towards the tunnel.

McCarthy then waited to see how the game developed for eight more minutes before replacing Jonathan Douglas with the more attacking Teddy Bishop with Williams one of those left unused.

Having made the earlier two earlier changes, McCarthy felt Bishop was a better fit as a replacement for Douglas than Williams, who he views more as a number 10 than a central midfield player per se.

“We had a physical threat with Brett, Freddie’s gone and played wide and Bish is Bish and we saw what he was capable of [with his run which led to a freekick just outside the box],” he said.

“It was a toss-up between that and then I’m not going to take Dougie off and put Jonny on in the centre of the park because he’s not really a central midfield player. That was just my choice.”

Since returning to fitness having rejoined the Blues for his fourth loan spell from Crystal Palace while he was recovering from an ankle injury suffered with the Eagles in pre-season, the 23-year-old Wales international has made six sub appearances but is yet to start a game.

The lack of goals comes directly from the central midfield being unable to sustain an attack and put teams under pressure. Skuse and douglas dont have the vision or mobility to put teams under pressure.

Freddie Sears, doesn't score and doesn't create any Goals, It took most of the season for the Dinosaur to eventually drop him, Then he brings him on in front of Williams, Time to go MM..

At the time we signed him on loan I suggested it was 'one for the fans'. McCarthy is proving that was the case.

Williams should have STARTED the game, end of.

His problem is he will go forward and try and get past players and pass a ball accurately more than 10 yds-----MM will be having none of that mullarkey!!

George Burley has said to be "delighted to be back in charge" of the club he has "always called home".

"It feels like ive been away for such a long time. I have been back in Ipswich for a few years now just living my life and enjoying my family. But seeing this job come available again, i just couldnt resist. I do feel like i have a wee bit of unfinished business. Im excited now to knuckle down and get this club back to where it belongs!"

"Im not going to give too much away right now with regards to transfers and backroom staff changes. But i do feel as though the first thing i must do, is bring back the family club feeling to this club. The togetherness of the club, the supporters and the whole town were massive factors which helped us win promotion last time around. Im confident we can all do it and very optimistic for the future."

We were against 10 men. Doesnt matter if he doesnt see Williams as a central midfielder we could afford to put him on in a free role.
Hes a coward. Simple as

Bishop is nowhere near the player he was 3 years ago - far too lightweight, doesn't make things happen anymore.

Williams has that spark about him.

The main problem as we all know is that we don't have a manager with any tactical ability for attacking the opposition.

@durhamfan (and others): I cannot help in answering your question on how Phil normally works or rather what Phil does or doesn't do in regard to his interview-related articles or any of his articles really! but I'm completely with @penguinblue (and also the likes of @BilllBlue who wrote a great lengthier piece also about) the blatantly obvious, apparently mostly "By DESIGN" ****one-dimensionality**** of nearly all ITFC info printed here by TWTD... nowadays anyway!!! As in far too often lacking in something just remotely close to 100% objectivity and unbiasedness along with it's somewhat hilarious going-out-of-it's-way to not step on ANYONE employed with the clubs' corn-stricken toes (just try comparing the TWTD 'Match Reports' especially when we don't win either 'nonfortuitously' or completely convincingly (which is rather seldom these days!!!), to the mainstreams' ones and also EADTs ... very interesting even if you actually didn't attend the game yourself!).
But most alarmingly: both post- and pre- game interviews with the Dino which as good as always are completely lacking and devoid of any skeptical questioning becoming of ANY journalist/reporter even those so unfortunate to be missing their 'cohones' all-together! .... and especially by one who happens to co-run an Internet fan-site like TWTD where he is fully able to read for himself the in this year alone truckloads upon truckloads of skeptical questions and direct complaints from a daily growing sizable chunk of his sites members particularly those relating to the management incl. undebatable hedgehog-like & NEGATIVITY-laden tactics, unwarranted personal favorite-laden starting lineups and mind- boggling unsound and/or coming too late substitutions etc etc .... besides all those posts which is related to the shameful and utterly INDIFFERENT way the seemingly nowadays offshorish-tax-deduction fixated only & hands down always ultra media-shy owner of this here once proud football club, has decided to "run" it particularly the last 3+ years!!!

And while Phil's private opinions on both MM and ME and where his deeper sympathies lies with either of the 2 factions of now SADLY very-close-to-be-literally-fighting-one-another Ipswich fans , is obviously all his prerogative, naturally! .... ehhh I still I would just also like to point out that this here article on Williams this morning then also has an almost amusing "coincidentiality" about itself and its "timing" ---- imho, completely non- paranoid & non-conspiracy-theoretical opinion that is! :-) :-) :-) :-)
Thus printed here on this site 06.00 Monday .... Hmmm I'm thus a tiny bit curious as to WHEN & WHERE exactly (so please insert such info next time please!) the beleaguered Dino "explained himself" on this btw recurring hot matter of Williams, i.e. him not being used enough or him not being used at all when fit, just slightly taking into consideration that on this week's 'Match Report' + 'Post Game analysis' TWTD articles alone -- plus all over Town actually! -- there were a vast amount of people exactly asking/looking for an explanation in some form or other.
.... And I just checked with EADT again where the normally quite well-informed Stuart Watson "finally" :-) started carrying a 'Williams Story' at 10.29. His own 06.00 input btw is an under the current dire and troubling circumstances very appropriate piece: "Get out of your bubble Marcus Evans and Mick McCarthy and remember who is important — the Ipswich Town supporters!!!".
Oh well maybe all this curious "timing" part of the bigger story was just pure and elementary coincidence after all, Dr. Watson ... maybe! :-) lol

MM's full of it. Williams six weeks ago said: “Ideally I'd play central [midfield]". He's good enough for a team that made the semi-finals of Euro '16. Not good enough for a team 17th in the Championship it seems.

All you guys on here week in week out moaning and groaning about MM & ME, and what players should be played, and how the invisible ME runs the club, little or no investment etc etc. well as I see it and I have been a fan for over 57 years, IS A MASS WALK OUT OF THE FANS, JUST DONT GO TO A FEW HOME MATCHES, a few under 5000 fan attendances at a home game just might switch a light on in the board room, Also put banners up with you grievances plainly to be seen, if you want MM out then put it in BOLD, if you want ME to explain the lack of investment put it in BOLD, the best time will be when we are on a televised match, if you want results you must protest long and hard not just one offs, they are soon forgotten, but if you are a pain in the butt it will get answers, so Tractor Boy fans UP the Revolution

Quote the dino "Having made the earlier two earlier changes, McCarthy felt Bishop was a better fit as a replacement for Douglas than Williams,

A better fit as a replacement for "chase me chase me" Douglas would be a wooden tent peg hammered into the pitch.

This man is a fool and I can't bear to hear anymore pathetic excuses. There is no excuse for not playing Jonny when we have paid a million just to have him on loan and his twice as good as any other player...and he is fit as well!!!

Mick thinks that anyone with pace has to be a winger and can't play through the middle. Through the middle is where the likes of Williams and Sears play their best football.

Then again, compared to the pace of Skuse and Douglas, every player is surely a winger then.

There's so many people on here who want MM out, but it's like Brexit: they don't have a plan B.
Why is it that people expect miracles on a shoestring budget? Accept it. We are able to spend way less than any of the recent ex-premier league clubs, plus some others, like Brighton, who are trying to buy their way up. Unless someone knows a ridiculously wealthy foreigner who's prepared to pump money in the team, we will always have a budget smaller than a fair number of teams in this division. And results will reflect that.
And people have short memories. We can all probably remember Paul Jewell "breath of fresh air" turning into Jewell Out. Keane - some serious attacking play Keano turning into Keane Out. I remember Robson Out, but there's now a statue to him.
I say don't throw toys out of the pram just because we get the results we can afford.

PutneyBlue supporters may not have a plan b, but neither does MM, how often when we are chasing a game does he bring on similar players as substitutes. He keeps playing players out of position when he has other options, players out of form players when we have alternatives, so where is his plan b. If he would be more adaptable I could forgive some of his short comings but his stubbornness in sticking to the same game plan whoever we play is exasperating in the least.

Just thought with all the managerial debate going on at the moment, i'd make a mention of a website: managerstats.co.uk along with all other clubs, it has the records of all Ipswich Town managers since we turned professional. Makes very interesting reading. The top three won't surprise many, the fourth just might! I will point out i have absolutely no connection to the above website!
