McCarthy Tightlipped But Rotherham Say No Town Bid for Ward
Monday, 2nd Jan 2017 18:22

Boss Mick McCarthy wouldn’t comment on the Blues’ interest in either Danny Ward or Cauley Woodrow following the 2-1 defeat at QPR, but Rotherham caretaker manager Paul Warne said that the Millers have not received a bid from Town for Ward following their 3-0 loss at Leeds.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield following their game at Elland Road, Warne said: “I know categorically, unless someone’s got a better connection to this club and the chief executive and chairman than me, there’s been no connection with Ipswich at all.

“I know that the manager likes him because I spoke to him and who wouldn’t like Wardy?

“But I also know that no bid has put in at all [from Ipswich]. There has been one from a club, I’m not going to tell you which club and we turned it down, but it wasn’t Ipswich.”

He added: “If there was a good offer for Wardy I still don’t think we’d accept it, the chairman doesn’t want me to sell anyone, and why would I sell my best striker? But in the same way everyone’s got a value, everyone’s got a price.

Quizzed on his interest in Ward, who is out of contract at the end of the season, McCarthy remained tightlipped: “I wouldn’t tell you if there was.”

Asked about loan target Cauley Woodrow, he was similarly taciturn: “Plays for Fulham.”

Questioned further on whether the 22-year-old might be playing somewhere else soon, he added: “They want him to go out on loan, so probably, yes.”

On reports that Wolves are keen on skipper Luke Chambers, he said: “I’ve not heard anything about that.”

Is Chambers someone he wouldn’t want to lose? “I don’t want to lose anybody, to be honest. I haven’t got that many players and can be shipping out.”

Asked whether he is hopeful of having someone signed before the Lincoln match, he said: “We’ll see.”

Only one signature is important. The one on his resignation letter!

Looks unlikely then. Other club rumoured to be Huddersfield. Suspect Evans is more interested in cheap freebies and short term loans. MM hasn't learnt from previous mistakes and is still negative, whilst I doubt Evans has learnt anything either.

that's the trouble with media speculation, it's just that, speculation. You cant go blaming MM for weak journalism. He clearly has different targets.

I just hope they're prepared to play our of position when they sign for ITFC!

Cant see anybody who is half decent coming here. Who would want to join a club with a manager whos as much use as a condom with a hole in it.

Is it true that the support made the negative changes this afternoon then?

The January window is a sellers market. If we want to buy anyone now we will have to pay more than normal. That is the way of it.

Evans will have to stump up some cash to really improve the squad.

We've had four months since the transfer window closed, so I hope ITFC have some deals lined up to be announced during the week. Permanent signings only please as the league season is dead hopefully, so loan fees and wages would be a waste of money. I write 'hopefully' as with Blackburn winning today we're only 7 points ahead of the drop zone so could still get sucked into that, although I doubt it.

why would potential new players want to come to a club were the fans are so bloody negative, unforgiving and basically target and chant ridiculous insulting comments from the stands when they arrive probably carrying out the manager's instructions?

Cheshire blue and Arnie M there wouldnt be a problem with the supporters if we had a manager who didnt make countless wrong decisions yes im no football manager but its embarressing the clangers he makes regarding team selection plus subs etc.
The fans are the most important part of a football club and they have every right to voice their frustrations they pay good money to watch others earning thousands doing a bad job.

Completely agree with the above comments about our support. It's quite frankly embarrassing. Makes playing at home a hostile atmosphere and affects the team. Fans do have a right to voice their opinions but by doing it during games you are damaging the team, making them nervous and this can lead to mistakes.

It's just unfortunate that some of the so called 'fans' act this way and I find it embarrassing to be associated with you.

Where else are you supposed to voice it then??sorry but it costs enough to watch that crap, at least should be allowed to voice just how annoyed you are. They get paid enough!!

Makes the players nervous does it? Poor over paid little darlings. If they were any good they wouldn't be getting the comments. Ipswich fans are very easygoing and always have been probably too much so.
The problem lays solely with McCarthy who must be able to see the problems but insists on doing the same thing over and over again.
What I don't understand is if Evans really wants the club to develop and play home grown players why does he let McCarthy get away with using the likes of donkey Douglas.
After what he has done to Sears and Chambers what player in their right mind is going to sign for him?

Miles - I was at the game yesterday and the only hostility was towards Mick AFTER he made the Douglas change, went negative - when even a non football "expert" (like Bob Bradley at 😀) could see we were on top - and lost us the game !
At half time even tho one down the team were applauded off & Mick credited with at last changing tack to try and play attacking football.
He changed that by reverting to type & he alone is responsible.
If you are happy with what's going on then good luck to you ..... but please do not criticise the passionate fans I saw yesterday at the end of their tether.
Where else can they attempt to show the owner, manager & players they are frustrated and upset ...... a nicely worded letter to the club maybe ? A polite question at the AGM ...... cause that ain't working !!!

Excellent & true post Phillo, the problem is nobody at the club will listen !

Us fans pay the wages of the players and staff so we have every right to voice our opions, trouble is dinosaur Mick doesn't give a toss what anyone else thinks as he's too stubborn and ME must be the worse business men in history if he can allow one of his 'managers' to run his business into the hole it's falling into without stepping in and doing something about it. Do us all a favour ME, sell up and ship out and take that stubborn old fool with you before we lose the the club WE love coz obviously you don't!!

I do not think the atmosphere has ever been hostile at Portman Road. Perhaps derby day back in the 70s and 80s maybe.
I would say sometimes it has been uneasy, but hostile...NO!!!
I am unsure exactly what fans are meant to do. I do not condone barracking your own players during the game, however most of the flak is aimed at the manager for his lack of tactical know how. For months now Mick has been selecting out of form players, players out of position, and generally trying not to lose games (rather than win them ) Yesterday again was a prime example. Started with what was seen as an exciting line up...which lasted for 45 minutes, and then went back to type by bringing on Douglas and Knudsen to hold on.
Also note that even Manchester United fans boo when they don't win and they have multiple trophies.
It is not the fact we lose, it is the way we lose and that is the difference !!!
