McCarthy to Talk to Loanees and Spence at End of Season But Williams Unlikely to Return
Thursday, 27th Apr 2017 15:30

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he’ll address the situations of loanees Emyr Huws, Toumani Diagouraga and Dominic Samuel and short-term signing Jordan Spence at the end of the season but indicated that it’s unlikely that Jonny Williams will return to Portman Road next season after another injury-hit loan spell from Crystal Palace.

Asked whether Diagouraga, who is on loan from Leeds, was one he’d consider signing in the summer, McCarthy said: “No, not at the moment. I just want to get through to the two games, to be honest with you.

“Toums has done well, as has [on-loan Cardiff midfielder] Emyr [Huws] coming in. They helped steady the ship for a while there and they’ve both been good for us. I’ll talk to them about that.”

Regarding on-loan Reading striker Samuel, who made his full Town debut at Rotherham last week, the Town boss said: “I like Dom and we’ll have to chat to Reading about that.”

He added: “Until the last game of the season, it’s a bit premature to be talking about them.”

McCarthy says he’s been delighted with right-back Spence, who joined on a deal to the end of the season in January following a trial earlier in the campaign.

“He’s done very well, I’ve been really pleased with Jordan and we’ll talk to him and see what he wants to do and speak to his agent as well,” he continued.

Quizzed on whether Williams, who has made only one start and seven sub appearances during this season’s loan spell and has been ruled out of the remaining two games with a hamstring problem, might return to the Blues next season, McCarthy said it’s unlikely.

“I wonder whether he’d want to come here, he’s had nothing but injuries,” he reflected. “He was so fabulous the first time he came here, wonderfully gifted and lit the place up with his ability and his pace and trickery and with the smile on his face as well while doing it.

“I’ll never forget his goal against Derby. He was outstanding but that’s not happened since and we’ve had him on two other occasions, he’s just been injured, which is really sad.

“Sad for us and I guess for the club and the fans because everybody loved him, but even sadder for him that his career’s stalled.

“I don’t think that’s going to be the case. I think he’s got a year left to run at Crystal Palace and I think it’s a big year for Jonny. He needs to go and play somewhere and play regularly.”

McCarthy has previously said Town have no chance of signing 11-goal top scorer Tom Lawrence, who is on loan from Leicester, in the summer and expects the Wales international to move on to another Premier League club.

Hopefuly we can sign Huws and give Spence a longer contract. He can send Diagoraga back to Leeds as I am sure we can do better.

We will still have Skuse and Ward with Bishop and Hyam. I'm not sure about Samuel as I haven't seen enough of him.

Williams needs to go back!

So, he may sign a bunch of loanees who are part of a poorly performing team. We've no chance of signing the top scorer and don't want Darren Anderton's mentee.

What will change?

Not much whilst MM is at the helm.

The best we expect is more of the same.

Agree with MM on this time to let williams go back I'm afraid to say he could have been fantastic here but 3 games a season isn't good enough get Huws in asap

First change needed McCarthy's departure.

Spence has been one of the few bright positive things from this under achieving season. He has been solid in defence and has real engine in him & is particularly impressive getting down the wing and attacking. Perhaps needs to be a tad more physical in his tacking, but that is being picky.

Huws-Yes
Diags-No IMO, unless a cull of our existing midfielders is planned.
Samuel-No
Williams-No
Spence-50/50 as he is good but we could do better budget permitting, and I don't think there is much difference between him and Emmanuel, who has more potential.

Spence - definite yes. Along with the RB & RWB positions, he also did well as a RCB in a three and in years to come in my opinion with his mobility and ability on the ball, could well be a good premier league player in the latter position.
Huws - yes for a small fee, as he will be expecting decent wages.
Samuel - yes for free or a small fee, has potential and can finish, but far from finished article.
Williams - if he is fit and available on a free pre seasson, he is not much of a gamble, palace can hardly expect a fee with his injury record and might be happy to get him off the wage bill, quality number 10's dont normally come cheap, he will eventually prove a bargain for someone.
Diagouraga- hasnt done enough to date
Academy players - great to see some on the verge of a breakthrough, but the reality is that none, Emmanuel & Kenlock included, would at the moment make any team in the top half of the championship or arguably the bottom half. Hopefully all will progress preseason.

Huws and Spence Def yes.Dave no.Not sure about Samuel as not seen enough of him.

It is sad regarding Jonny W;but if we can get him back on a pay as you play deal, then think that would be ok,as I like him.Shouldn't think any club would risk signing him with his dreadful injury record;and like Didsy is very good when fit!

I'm sorry to hear about Jonny Williams who I think is a really class player, especially at Championship level. Couldn't we sign him on a pay per play deal?

Don't worry about Jonny Williams injury record, his replacement is already lined up he's called Taylor. Good as he may of been and good at talking and having around the place as MM says. We need footballers on the pitch. Luke Hyam is another, release him so he may have better luck at another club, Bishop is another one, more interested in body art than getting back into the team. Club needs a clear out, some players have become stale, others under performed for to long. The club can not afford a huge squad of players and a high percentage of injury prone players on the books.

Really sad to hear about Jonny Williams but hopefully he can kick on in his career and start playing regularly, when fit he is a brilliant player. Spence has been a real positive, wasnt sure when we signed him but the guy has proved me wrong, great drifted cross for Knudsen's header against Norwich.

we will see players go during summer and be replaced with players of same ilk .If Evans wont spend and McCarthy remains [as I suspect] we will go into next season in exactly same shambolic state, loan ,players and misfits.Fans are already getting hopes up ,I cant knock them ,but I do fear they are going to be very disappointed .
