Steijn: I'm on List of Possible New Ipswich Bosses
Monday, 1st May 2017 17:34

VVV-Venlo manager Maurice Steijn understands he is on a list of potential new Town bosses but hasn’t heard anything from the club and says it’s likely he’ll still be with his current club next season.

Steijn, 43, who saw VVV to the Jupiler League (Dutch second tier) title this season, was first mentioned in connection with the Blues early in April when his agent said he was aware of rumours linking his client with Town but said there had been no contact.

Later in the month, the former ADO Den Haag midfielder and manager subsequently added that he hadn’t spoken to the Blues.

Now, speaking to Dutch TV channel Omroep West, Steijn says he has been told he is on a list of potential successors to current Town boss Mick McCarthy.

“I know there is a list of possible new coaches for Ipswich Town,” he said. “I'm on that list.

“A couple of English journalists called me and confirmed that. But as long as I don't hear anything, it is not an option. It’s most likely therefore that I will still be working at VVV next year.”

Steijn is contracted to VVV for another season with talks regarding an extension having taken place.

However, his current deal includes a clause allowing him to depart if a bigger club comes calling and he doesn't rule out moving on: "I'm open to a departure."

In January, Town boss McCarthy said he would make a decision on whether to stay at Portman Road in the summer, which may have led the Blues to look at potential options if he decided to move on.

However, while MD Ian Milne said on Saturday that the former Millwall, Republic of Ireland, Sunderland and Wolves manager's future has not yet been confirmed, McCarthy himself has more recently said on a number of occasions that he has no plans to move on.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Symonds has left the Marcus Evans Group but remains a director of Town.

Symonds was appointed the chief operating officer of mobile ticketing company Active PLC in January after more than 20 years with MEG.

He joined the Town board in November 2007 following Marcus Evans’s takeover and was joint-managing director with Milne between April 2013 and August 2015.

I saw the interview and he really didn't say anything at all. Now, I like Steijn — I'm a lifelong VVV fan so know him pretty well — but if we're going to spend ‘McCarthy wages' on a new manager we could do better / take a lesser gamble. I'd go for Ron Jans who is departing FC Zwolle. He literally worked miracles — back to back cup finals — there.

Steijn is good value for money though. He's on a roughly 150k salary at VVV so we will save lot in that regard. He sure puts players in right positions and doesn't seem to have favourites in his teams which is a big step forward imo.

Steijn sure seems to appreciate creative footballers a lot more than McCarthy does. For instance; during training and friendlies against amateurs it is absolutely forbidden to play the ball back to the keeper from any position.

Anyway. I still think this deal is still highly unlikely but I sure would welcome it.

My friends in Holland are Venlo fans and think he is great and just right for us.

Has taken a smallish town team in to Dutch first division by winning title with something to spare------we need dutch to get our fans back and get a buzz around the ground again.

We were told at Cardiff the club was going Dutch-----please let it be true and then we can all actually look forward to next season for the first time in ages.

A nice orange trim on the new shirts would also be nice!!

Saints are parting way with their manager because players , club officials and supporters don't like the negative style of play !!!!
Come on Evans make a decision now , this has been drifting on far to long and MM has been in decline for over 2 and a half seasons

All clubs keep lists of potential managers, they have to from a risk point of view in the event a managers quits/ gets sacked at short notice. Im sure these lists get updated almost weekly with circumstances changing continuously.

Bermingham had Zola lined up before Rowett was sacked. You can be sure they had Redknapp lined up before sacking Zola.
Dito with Derby County and I'm sure many other clubs.

surely he's got to be worth a chat to see what ideas he could bring? would be worth a gamble with him or another young hungry manager to see if we can bring some smiles and optimism back to our club. saying this i think MM & TC will be here next year.

The line from the article which stands out for me is :"Steijn is contracted to VVV for another season with talks regarding an extension having taken place".
While I'm sure he would be interested in becoming or new manager, I'm pretty sure this was a strategy for negotiating a better contract worked out by his agent. All he has said is that he was told that he was on a list of "possible new coaches for Ipswich Town" - nothing he could be accused of making up there.
I was hopeful that we were going to hear about a mutually agreed termination of the manager's contract this summer, but his comments over the last week seem to indicate that he clearly intends to stay for the final year. Again though, this could be a tactic from a manager who is trying to secure as big a settlement pay out as possible, in the knowledge that his time is up.

Apparently the new shirt is coming out later than usual. The release date wouldn't be affected by a change of Manager, but it would be affected by a change of Sponsor. . . . . ..

No Thanks. We need a proven successful Championship manager who will gain the respect of the players and play attractive football. The main question for me is - what is ME's investment going to be for next season, whether that is MM/or a new Manager?

Perspective is needed when weighing up MM - check out page 11 of the document below, it's all you need to know.

Go to beta.companies house
search Ipswich Town Football Club
Click on Filing History
Click on Group Companies Accounts made up to 30th June 2016 (click on view pdf)
go to page 11.

£net debt = £86,513,000.

Page 26, note 26 confirms that the cub owes ME (in two chunks) £73.7m.

Its worth pointing out that MM and to a greater or lesser extent ME have picked this up from legends like Sheepshanks, Burley, Keane etc - you want to know why Chambers is playing at centre back and we bring Moore on off the bench?? 86.5m reasons spring to mind......

@brian-a -mul

I don't disagree or dispute that most of the bigger clubs in the top 2 tiers have and keep manager list, but rather I merely just wanted to correct you regarding the nature of Zola's departure from Birmingham .... and "obviously" :-) (well I'm a well-known Anti-MM'er ain't I? lol ) use it to have yet another truly awesome & longwinded :-) go at the Dino McCarthy! HeHe

If I recall correctly I think that among all the UK newspapers that I frequently bother to rest my eyes on 'The Telegraph's' headline: "Gianfranco Zola: 'I sacked myself' - The club deserve better"!!! not only covered it best but also send the best moral message to other managers out there who for long haven't been getting results and/or just generally no longer lives up to their club & their fans expectations (in other words: WOW! Respect Bro!' is what I personally think of the legendary Mr. Zola).

It's obviously true that Zola too for long had been and still was the beneficiary of a very very patient board and/or patient owner but hey!!! check this little interesting fact out: Despite actually having a lofty "100%" more wins than the tactical inept, draw-happy & as good as never setting up-to-win dreaded Dino had during a 14 game run (Zola 2-wins-14 vs. Dino 1-win-in-14) Gianfranco hence did 'THE HONORABLE THING'......... and resigned himself!!!!!!!!!!
And I'm fairly certain that because of his name & awesome legend, the monthly salary + the total outstanding money which could be earned on his contract, which he all in principal waved goodbye by throwing in the towel himself, probably both were a LOT more pesos than in the case of what the Dino would lose here at ITFC!

Also pay attention to 2 pivotal things (highlighted in bold below) from Zola's resignation press conference that fans neither have nor probably ever never will hear in any sincere form at least from the self-perceived & inferred infallible Dino McCarthy during any prolonged bad & not-winning run .... at any club he has been I believe (didn't say at Sunderland, didn't say at Wolves, and haven't really said or meant it here at Ipswich, where it this season especially it has according to MM basically been everybody & everything else's fault incl. Them "f@ckers"! aka all the ITFC fans but especially of course those who still bother to turn up to watch his By & Large prehistoric, hedgehoglike, negative DrossBall!).

Gianfranco Zola:
"I'm sorry because I came here with huge expectations and the results, unfortunately, haven't been good. I TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THAT [them bad results as in not winning with any remote regularity]".

"I'm the first one to be disappointed by results. If I feel like I cannot help the team, it's better that I leave somebody else to do that." IF I** FEEL LIKE I CANNOT HELP THE TEAM, IT'S BETTER THAT I LEAVE SOMEBODY ELSE TO DO THAT".

** = [Or IMHO including: in most cases with our own untenable case here at ITFC definitely being one of them, where anywhere between say 66-75% of the always very existential to any big club, fans strongly "feel it"!!!]

Aye, sigh :( sigh :( sigh :( sigh :( if only the biiiig Mr. Mick McCarthy had one ounce of decency ... as well as objectivity! and Mea Culpa! in his dinosauric body ... he should do (and actually already have done quite a back while say after the double outplayed & outpassed by Lincoln embarrassment or else well before that 1-win-14 stretch came to an fortuitous end!) this 'THE HONORABLE THING' himself. Hands Down!!!

....But not surprisingly since it's the beyond ultra arrogant & and always preoccupied with padding himself on the back Mr. Mick McCarthy we are talking about now he -- our in some blinkers-wearing ITFC simpletons' mind perceived "ONE & ONLY possible Messiah of 2013/2014" LMAO! -- rather not only chose to refer to all ITFC fans as them "f@ckers" on the eve of that glorious-to-be SBR Day but also on Bart's POTYA banquet proclaim: "That if for NOOOOO other reasons then he will return for the next season just to annoy those (excessively many) who don't like him!!!" -------- Now I saw on the still largely infested by "In-Mick-We-Blindly-Trust" brigade TWTD Forum that several of it's meep! meep! muppets :-) there have just simply wiped that very POTYA remark under the old rug by implying it was said in jest .... well personally I don't really think so, but even if it to a bigger degree was on that particular occasion it not only came directly after the very strong signal of general disapproval that was the turned-out-to-be TRAVESTY of a scarcely fan witnessed 'Lap of Appreciation' (where MM were partly booed or heckled by some of those fans still left), but fundamentally he has said or implied this or words to that effect i.e. that he seriously thinks its directly funny that he & his unsound dispositions annoy so many of our fans and that he just luuuuves to eagerly continue to annoy them, innumerous times before in the past but of course particular during this poor season, that there can be no doubt whatsoever that the inherently obnoxious foulmouthed Yorkshire prat generally wholeheartedly means it!

MM, ME & IM out!!! Yesterday, Today .... and Tomorrow!!!

Just looked up MM on Wikipedia to see how great the man's record is and it makes interesting reading!! He ain't very good at all and there are references to favouritism, poor tactics etc. So nowt changes in boring Yorkshire. Please please go, Glen Driver at Leiston is a good manager but really anyone who has ever played the game at any level could do better than this arrogant xxxt.
Read the bit about his loans whist at Millwall and it is very worrying

If people are so good at predicting things, like what will happen if MM goes, why don't they buy some lottery tickets win the jackpot a few times then they can buy the club and give him the funds they believe he needs to show how brilliant a manager he is. Or they could sit down and reflect on his tenure here, look at the style of play, the tactics he uses, the players he continues to pick when they are clearly out of form and lacking confidence, look at some of the players who have left who he never gave a real chance to, analysis his use of young players who even when they perform at a higher level than the player they temporarily replace. After this please explain how he deserves to receive your support, not blind unquestioning loyalty viewed through blue tinted glasses, but in the cold hard light of day.

@BecclesBlue500

No offense really, but these debt figures are literally "old news" to any not completely ignorant of what is going ITFC fan imho. Rather of extremely much more crucial importance: Does this linked-to site or any of it's public available PDF files ehmmm say ANYTHING whatsoever about the many many £ millions 'The Marcus Evans Group' or alternatively simply Marvelous Marcus 'The Tax-payer' himself annually most surely have, repeat have, saved on that surprisingly often conveniently "forgotten" by some fans here tiny little itty bitty :-) thingie called ~~ CORPORATE TAX DEDUCTIBILITY ~~ of Debt, in this regard of course "Debt of Ipswich Town FC" from 2007 to 2016** ???????????? lol

Footnote:
** = This period is not a typo as the reason for me not saying 2007-2017+ is because as I in greater detail have written about several times here on TWTD mucho mucho stricter new UK Tax Laws went into effect on April 1, 2017 -- but affected buisness and individuals have obviously known about then coming in to effect loooong before that date! -- which specifically targets the debt exploits of Corporate Groups! or if you mostly prefer :-) some direct quotes from this UK 'Policy Paper: "Groups that have engaged in aggressive tax planning using debt to reduce their tax bill" ... This measure may also increase the cost of capital "As it may restrict the amount of corporate interest payments allowed to be offset against corporation tax liability".

No smoke without fire I hope!

This would be a gamble as I believe he was sacked by ADO Den Haag in Feb 2014,before taking over VVV the following July;so it has taken him 3 seasons to get them promoted.

I am not sure about the strength of the 2nd tier in the Netherlands,so perhaps Frank or other Dutch residents could enlighten us?

What I am sure about is that if McCarthy goes then this would immediately boost the sales of tickets, and bring a more positive mood to PR;as I think the status quo is not an option.

Marcus Evans with his worldwide empire must struggle to devote enough time to the club, unlike his predecessors so a competent and knowledgeable CEO is really required.Think he has just taken on an experienced Secretary.

Mr Evans has not chosen wisely in the past,so it is a gamble.Perhaps a Director of Football would help;but this would cost more money.

However I am hopeful that something will happen next week,as to be fair Mr Evans couldn't really act before the seasons end here and in Holland.

Isnt this what Charlton did a few years ago when they disposed of chris powell . Got a young manager from abroad . Look where they are now. Not a big fan of MM as this season has been a disaster but be careful what you wish for.

Try and get Derek Adams - Plymouth Argyle manager - completely rebuilt his squad (14 signings)last summer after losing out on promotion in the play offs .. now on the verge of winning League 2. In interviews - speaks his mind, doesn't have favourites, plays attacking football, encourages and develops youth...

As for this guy .. never heard nor the club .. no idea .. a bit like MM, ME, and IM
