Rangers Striker Waghorn Set to Join Blues
Sunday, 6th Aug 2017 23:37

Rangers are reported to have accepted a bid of around £1 million from Town for striker Martyn Waghorn.

According to the Daily Mail, the Blues have fought off opposition from Waghorn’s local club Sunderland, where he began his career, to land the 27-year-old frontman.

Town boss Mick McCarthy revealed on Friday that he was close to landing another striker, having sold Brett Pitman to Portsmouth last month.

At Saturday's game neither McCarthy nor MD Ian Milne would be drawn on the identity of the target - although Milne did reveal it was someone who was a familiar name - but we understand the Blues are expecting to confirm the signing on Monday.

South Shields-born Waghorn came through the Black Cats' youth system and made a handful of Premier League appearances while at the Stadium of Light as well as having spells on loan at Charlton and Leicester before joining the Foxes on a permanent basis for £3 million in August 2010.

The 5ft 10in tall former England U19 and U21 international was loaned to Hull City, Millwall and Wigan while a Leicester player before joining the Latics full-time on a free transfer in April 2014.

He moved on to Rangers in July 2015, signing a three-year deal. While with the Ibrox club Waghorn made 63 starts and 15 sub appearances, scoring 44 goals, 16 of them last season.

During 2015/16 Waghorn, who can also operate in wide areas, helped Rangers to carry off the Scottish Championship and Scottish Challenge Cup. He was also named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year for the Championship that season.

Waghorn was left out of the 18 for today's 2-1 victory over Motherwell, the Glasgow giants' opening league fixture of the season.

Previously he started the first leg of the Europa League qualifier against Niedercorn from Luxembourg at end of June but was left out of the second match the following week.

The Rangers squad is currently in a state of flux with manager Pedro Caixinha, who was appointed in March, looking to offload a number of players in order to bring in his own recruits.

The Blues have already benefited from Rangers' summer fire sale by signing Joe Garner, the scorer of a debut winner in yesterday's 1-0 victory over Birmingham, back in June.

Meanwhile, MK Dons blog On The Dot claims Town are closing in on the loan signing of young Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes.

The 19-year-old England U18 international spent a successful spell on loan with Milton Keynes in League One last season and is set to be sent out on loan again this season to gain further experience. Barnsley could also be showing interest.

While the addition of a striker has been the Blues' priority, another wideman is also certain to be on McCarthy's wish-list.

Dictionary says : "Journeyman" - a 2nd/3rd rate footballer who has under-achieved throughout a career which has encompassed a huge number of clubs ; most closely associated with 'exciting' signings by Mick McCarthy at Ipswich Town.

Yet again, I stand on Framlington hill
In the midst of havoc, at a standstill
A piece of land that I swore to defend
Is it worth the life of a brother, a friend?
My faltering sword could no longer fight
For whom I now behold in my sight
And I question my vow, having vowed despite
Whether or not my cause was right
Through fallen decades, aggrieved heart sustained
I found my calling, forgot I was pained
Just when the going got peaceful and boring
Gales of anguish, and war started pouring

Time to rally to the flag and support the badge

He doesn't fill me with confidence - he's had 1 prolific season - in the Scottish Championship, just 7 SPL goals last season, his last time in the Championship he got 3 in 24 for Wigan....

McCarthy does have a decent record about getting the best out of these sort of players though, so lets hope he can do it again!

Just watched the video and he looks handy enough. He shows nice touches with both feet (I like to see that) and has a decent shot on him. We can't expect the world for 1 million. Given Sears seems to have totally lost confidence in front of goal (just look at his miss Saturday) anybody with an eye for goal needs to be welcomed with open arms. He might be a bit an injury risk but then if he wasn't he'd probably be double the money at least! When I first read the article I was like WTF, but then watched the YouTube video I was pleasantly surprised. The same was true with Joe Garner. I initially read the article and thought, oh no please not Joke Garner a striker from Scotland where Keiffer Moore could prob bag 20 in a season, however, when I subsequently YouTubed him and saw the quality of some of the goals I thought, this one could well be worth a punt! Let's be honest, we've had far worse strikers at Portman Road than the looks of Waghorn so let's at least give him a chance and hope he can deliver the goods. The YouTube video of him makes me feel hopeful he can do a job for us as long. He's only 27 as well which is encouraging. Always nice to sign somebody the right side of 30! :-)

* as long as he can stay injury free but an injury can happen to any player (it's almost like Russian roulette), look at poor Andre on Saturday. I know some players are more prone to injuries than others. Look at Ibra for Man Utd. He's not had that many injury problems down the years and he went down with a shocker towards the end of last season. Injuries happen, it's just part of football. Sometimes a player with a bad injury record can get a change of luck and the next club brave enough to take a gamble on such a player can pick up a bargain. Worth a punt.

I guess the point I'm making is Marcus isn't going to give Mick enough money to go and buy a striker that ticks all the boxes, so he's got to try and box clever and find a relative bargain. I would probably prefer him to take a gamble on a fairly young striker from the League 1 or 2 that scored over 20 last season. However, I'm not going to be gutted if we take our punt on Waghorn as he does look worth a punt. A punt is a punt, you can't be 100% sure it's going to work out, but the lower the money you spend, the longer the odds of picking up a gem, we just have to accept that as Marcus is only prepared to back Mick with small beer (at least in proportion to his overall wealth) so there's only so many options out there within our price bracket.

Yes it's good to see his goals but they're the best bits and so my concern is that he's inconsistent and may not be good enough at this level. His Wigan stats don't look good!
I wasn't overjoyed with Garner signing but have proved to be wrong so far but if Waghorn does the same as Murphy then happy days.

Really like the fact that we are looking to bring in permanent signings - and spending some money at last - although it's worth noting that Rangers fan's don't rate this guy at all !

http://forum.rangersmedia.co.uk/topic/309560-waghorn-off-to-ipswich/

I was at the game on Saturday and was seriously impressed with Downes - and Garner for that matter (whom Rangers fans also don't rate at all !)

Would avoid refering to goal statistics for his time at Rangers too much, they are heavily distorted by penalties.
Being able to score a load of goals from the penalty spot isn't as useful as from open play if you don't get spot kicks.

Note: Nothing said against the player, just pointing out a fact. Some people seem to think it's only okay to state positives on here. Makes me chuckle. Lets see if this gets -10 for this post shall we lol

........ the 'proof of the pudding' is always in the eating - as the saying goes.

Quite extraordinary how in the eyes of some - every player we are linked with, or potentially signing, suddenly becomes nothing less than world class in their eyes.

Euphoric tendencies - or what ? - let's just hope for the best shall we, more rational by far.

Looking at the goals-reel two things strike me immediately: total composure in the box, and a quite deathly finish.

The first is crucial for a striker, bred from a natural self confidence and bodes very well.

The second is crucial for a striker, and for way way too long has been something absent from ITFC.

I think this is a very positive signing. If he's part of a good quality team he's a cherry on top that can make a massive difference.

I think a few of the detractors want a wonder player that can do it all alone. That's not what we need and isn't what the modern game is built on. You need a good with people who know their R&Rs.

Would be a decent signing and more importantly on a permanent deal. Building a team for the future is critical rather than being back to square one every summer. Two loans to top the team up is okay, but these type of deals are better and frankly needed in order to compete nowadays.

From the clips of Waghorn's goals it looks as if he is lethal with both feet. He's my sort of player.

Good to see we don't divulge potential targets until they are almost signed
for the club, unlike previous managers who used to identify players thereby alerting other clubs. We are getting a decent squad together and I believe a top half finish is a strong possibility. Good luck to Martyn with his ITFC career.
