Rangers Striker Waghorn Set to Join Blues
Sunday, 6th Aug 2017 23:37

Rangers are reported to have accepted a bid of around £1 million from Town for striker Martyn Waghorn.

According to the Daily Mail, the Blues have fought off opposition from Waghorn’s local club Sunderland, where he began his career, to land the 27-year-old frontman.

Town boss Mick McCarthy revealed on Friday that he was close to landing another striker, having sold Brett Pitman to Portsmouth last month.

At Saturday's game neither McCarthy nor MD Ian Milne would be drawn on the identity of the target - although Milne did reveal it was someone who was a familiar name - but we understand the Blues are expecting to confirm the signing on Monday.

South Shields-born Waghorn came through the Black Cats' youth system and made a handful of Premier League appearances while at the Stadium of Light as well as having spells on loan at Charlton and Leicester before joining the Foxes on a permanent basis for £3 million in August 2010.

The 5ft 10in tall former England U19 and U21 international was loaned to Hull City, Millwall and Wigan while a Leicester player before joining the Latics full-time on a free transfer in April 2014.

He moved on to Rangers in July 2015, signing a three-year deal. While with the Ibrox club Waghorn made 63 starts and 15 sub appearances, scoring 44 goals, 16 of them last season.

During 2015/16 Waghorn, who can also operate in wide areas, helped Rangers to carry off the Scottish Championship and Scottish Challenge Cup. He was also named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year for the Championship that season.

Waghorn was left out of the 18 for today's 2-1 victory over Motherwell, the Glasgow giants' opening league fixture of the season.

Previously he started the first leg of the Europa League qualifier against Niedercorn from Luxembourg at end of June but was left out of the second match the following week.

The Rangers squad is currently in a state of flux with manager Pedro Caixinha, who was appointed in March, looking to offload a number of players in order to bring in his own recruits.

The Blues have already benefited from Rangers' summer fire sale by signing Joe Garner, the scorer of a debut winner in yesterday's 1-0 victory over Birmingham, back in June.

Meanwhile, MK Dons blog On The Dot claims Town are closing in on the loan signing of young Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes.

The 19-year-old England U18 international spent a successful spell on loan with Milton Keynes in League One last season and is set to be sent out on loan again this season to gain further experience. Barnsley could also be showing interest.

While the addition of a striker has been the Blues' priority, another wideman is also certain to be on McCarthy's wish-list.

If it happens a great signing seen him play a few times, built like a brick outhouse and knows how to play football! The team is coming together nicely and I'm optimistic of at least a top 10 finish...

Not sure how anyone can complain with us permanently signing a 27 year old striker who's scored 44 in 63 including 16 last season...fee paid, permanent, good age, not a cart horse, clearly had an eye for goal, likely to know Garner well, how on earth can this not be a good thing??

Looks like a good signing etc, etc... No need to repeat what most people above have said but we have added a bit of needle to the team this year. Garner looks like he's got a bit of spite about him, winding people up and getting himself battered about, Downes has that in his game too and Waghorn is in a similar mould. It'll be interesting to see Wolves's Portugese all stars against us on a cold wet December 23rd!

Listen to all you idiots slating him before he even starts. He's got a better than 1 in 2 goal scoring record. Ffs you lot would find fault if we signed Messi. Idiots.

Looks like A very good permanent signing.Much better than a loan player,at least the commitment will be there.
I just cannot see why so many posters are against this signing. He scores goals, what more do you want.🤔

I would see his signing as a step in the right direction at last !
He is a powerful player don't worry about that ! 5ft 10 is hardly small

Alan shearer is 5ft 10 so I'm not concerned about that !

I have been a critic of Mick in recent times but hats off to him if and I use the word if this deal is done .

Wouldn't comment on him as I can't recall seeing him play however he seems to know were the goal is,the midfield at long last seems to know we're the forwards are what a turn around from the Charlton game we might only finish mid table but at least there is hope.
Welcome Martyrn and we'll done the Silver fox.

He is a very useful player. I seem to recall that we have been linked with him before??? If we get him the team has a much better look about it with several goal threats lining up. Am looking forward to seeing Huws and Adeyemi on the field together. With Garner and Waghorn up front and those two in central midfield we will be much more combative.......

You didn't look very far blueinblue..

I see the usual suspects are saying he is a bad player before he has even kicked a ball for us. The same ones who thought Garner was rubbish!

We done Mick and ME if you manage to get him signed for us.

Some right idiots on here. Moaned when the ball was lumped in the air from the back. Played a lot on the floor Saturday and everyone is happy.

Now signing a player who is not 6ft 3in and not a target man - which would mean lump ball - and the usual ones are moaning.

Really feel for Mick. Obviously trying to start the season playing the way we want and people are still not happy!!

Remember him scoring a good goal against us when Leicester hit us for 6 at start of Mick's reign. Been impressed when I have seen him live or on TV. Hope we get the deal done as I doubt there are many better out there within our price range

This is the clearist indication that McCarthy is changing the playing style like we saw Saturday: on the floor, down the side, ball to feet & with garner sears & Waghorn pace to hit teams over the top & counter attack: more positive signs: don't no anything about Barnes from Leicester but I do believe we need more wide options:

We wanted a striker, so here he is. Decent signing, well known, respectable scoring stats and Evans has splashed some more cash. Happy days, surely!

Typical mick player really.
Decent penallty taker but thats it.
A million seems ridiculous for him considering he is a walking hamstring injury.

That'll do. Potentially a new "double scotch " striking partnership up front AND two points more than the budgies. Nice start to the week in my opinion.

It says a fee has been agreed I will not start celebrating until he signs his name on the dotted line. It wouldn't be the first time someone chose Sunderland over us after a fee was agreed (remember Kevin Philips anyone).

I can't believe some people on here! All summer its been "we need a striker, never replaced Murphy and now Pitman's gone" When it is announced that we may be in for one, it's "underwhelming" and "terrible signing". What were you expecting for £1m?

Apparently Neymar was all set to come to Town but fancied shopping on the Champs Elysee rather than then the Cornhill, so chose Paris instead.

I remember thinkin he would have been a great signing when he went to Leicester. Strong, determined & a goal scorer. I haven't really been aware of him over the last few years, so he hasn't made the progress we might have expected. At 27 though, he has got to be a good addition (if confirmed) and he is still scoring goals albeit in a poor Scottish premier league.
Having Garner & Waghorn to 'compliment' the less combative forward players like McGoldrick, Celine, Sears & Ward has to be a good thing.

For 1 million this a decent signing .go land young barnes or noone and we have a decent squad with some real bite in it . Been a problem of late too many lightweights . Some good signings by mm this season imo .exciting that 3 of them never played o satday .positive thoughts

Jesus some of you love to be negative for the sake of it. Any permutation, some people will find reason to be negative.

Played with Garner at Rangers so clearly they link up well. Not a lot of £££ in this day and age, 27 years old and would have a resale fee should it be a mare.

McGoldrick won't do a season and Sears miss .... well I'd rather have Waghorn and Garner leading the line.
