I *think* the idea is not to “invert” per se, as that’s more when a fullback steps in to centre midfield, which is good if they have a great passing range (Trent, for example). I think the idea is more for Davis to get forward and underlap the winger rather than overlapping as he used to. This should allow him to join the attack from deeper on the pitch, rather than having to hang wide and wait for it. Think the idea is also to open up other attacking options for players like Szmodics - when the winger cuts inside to open the space out wide, like broadhead used to, it cramps the middle of the pitch. Szmodics is more of a shadow striker type 10 who plays off the CF in that space, Chappers dropped deeper and arrived late in the box more. In theory, keeping the left winger out wide should open up more space in the middle of the park giving us more options in attack.
Leif was very effective overlapping before, but I think that was partly because teams underestimated us and left space. It won’t work as well against packed defences and low blocks because that space simply isn’t there. I think we’re trying to open tens up a bit more with high wide wingers to give us other channels to attack in through the middle. My read, anyway.
So in your opinion, silence is telling but 200m spent on signings isn’t?
The amount of money, effort and ambition that the club has put in to this window says everything we need to know about the plans for the future. Personally, I’d much rather they let their actions speak for themselves, as they are doing, rather than putting out some kind of curated PR statement.
Apologies, had blanked out the Preston result mentally! I meant unbeaten in the league but that’s obviously wrong - my bad! I think my general point still stands though - if we win our next game we’ll be 2 points behind where Leeds were at that point in the season and they went on to smash the league once their team clicked and they got the confidence flowing again. Just can’t stand all the posts either saying KmC should be sacked now, or saying that he should be if results don’t pick up. Obviously if we’re fighting relegation in a few months then things will need to change, but I really don’t think there’s a chance of that happening. Form is temporary, and we have a seriously strong team which will be very good once we get a bit of confidence.
Sure, but we won’t be. We’ve played three games and you’re already predicting the worst. We’re unbeaten in the league (edit - we’re not, I’d blanked out the Preston result mentally), have shown good character to come from behind twice in stoppage time and are bedding in a new team. If we’d won all three it would be too soon to start engraving our champions trophy, and in the same way it’s too soon to write off the season because we’ve had a slow start. Leeds were on 5 points after three games and ended up 10 points clear of third.
Last time we were in the championship we had incredible confidence and momentum, which masked the fact we actually had a pretty weak team. Now we’ve got an excellent team lacking confidence - I know which situation I’d rather be in. Once we get some confidence back we’ll do well, and our team is far stronger than it was last time.
Maybe give McKenna a chance and stop worrying about what might happen? A bit of positivity would go a long way towards getting the confidence back in the team.
He has a long term expensive contract and has been backed with 200m in the transfer market. He’s going nowhere. Leeds took two seasons to get back in the Prem and now look strong enough to give survival a real go, McKenna will be given as much time as he needs and rightly so.
Quite a few players these days wear hand/wrist tape for reasons other than just injury, it’s becoming a bit of a trend. Suarez is a good example - he initially wore it to protect an injury but carried on wearing it after it was fully healed because he felt he played better and it became part of his pregame ritual. Lots of pics of Ivan wearing it for years so probably something like that, or maybe just being cautious after an old injury.
The dark times were when we had an owner that had no interest in putting money in, and we had to watch the club slowly slide down the table into irrelevance. Our owners are still piling in money, we’ve got an exciting young manager who just got us back to back promotions. We have a young, exciting squad full of proven championship players and we are likely to be adding a few more signings in the next week.
This is about as far from the dark times as we could possibly be. Absolute worst case we spend another season in the championship building the squad strength and cohesion, while bringing through some younger players, before going up again. Worked out well for Leeds!
Gambling companies tend to know what they are doing with setting the odds. We were favourites to go down both seasons that we did (prem and champ) and favourites to go up from league 1 when we did. The fundamentals of our squad and finances are very strong, just need the new team to gel and we could go on a great run. Leeds drew their first two last season and lost their fifth game, and went on to set a record points total. We need a new cm, need to get Jens up to speed and ideally another good winger and CF - think Prem loans will be on the way next week once they get their transfer business done, we’ll be fine.
Win-win situation for you then…either we do well and you can pretend you were always behind them, or we don’t do well and you can be smug and say “I told you do”. Genuinely can’t understand someone being this negative all the time, life must be pretty miserable!
Not really. We have a strong squad, a good manager and are expected to further strengthen before the end of the window with the 70m+ we’ve made in sales plus millions more in parachute payments. We haven’t looked great so far but it’s a work in progress.
2019-20 apparently. I was thinking the same, but maybe they were running out of the way as it was hit? The rules says “when three or more defending team players form a wall, all attacking players must remain at least one metre from the wall until the ball is in play”.
Was watching on sky - pretty sure he had realised he wasn’t quite quick enough to get away so he was trying to angle his run slightly to put his body was between the closest defender and the ball, meaning that the defender would have to go around him or risk taking him out and red card. Touch was a bit too heavy and ended up letting the defender get a touch. Right idea I think, but very slightly off on execution, which I think sums up a lot of our attacks!
