Town boss Mick McCarthy says further additions to his squad are currently unlikely, while he’s not looking to send out any of his fringe players on loan at the present time, stressing the importance f a strong U23s side.

McCarthy added Martyn Waghorn to his squad last week, while Joe Garner also joined the Blues from Rangers earlier in the summer.

Dominic Iorfa and Bersant Celina signed on loan from Wolves and Manchester City respectively, Emyr Huws made last season’s temporary switch from Cardiff a permanent move and Tom Adeyemi also made the move from the Bluebirds to the Blues having been released by the Welsh side.

“Unless injuries really bite and somebody’s out for a long time then I think we’d have to do something else, but other than that I think we’ve got, not a big squad, but it’s a squad of good players,” McCarthy said when asked whether he would be looking to add further signings.

The Town boss wouldn’t comment on reports Waterford pair Aaron Drinan and John Martin have joined the Blues on trial, however, we understand they have been at the club this week but are due to return to Ireland to play for their club in Friday's FAI Cup tie against Shelbourne.

McCarthy says he’s not currently considering sending his younger fringe players out on loan as he wants a strong U23s squad, which is coached by Gerard Nash.

“Anybody that thinks that they’re just being a bit previous with that one,” he said. “I think what we’ve got to do is try and get a good U23s team.

“And I think with the players that are coming through, we had Monty Patterson and Ben Folami travel with us and they’ve done really well training with the first team this pre-season up until the season starting, there’s a good feel about them.

“They’ve all improved and I think to try and get players through is great if you’ve got a good U23s team. Even if it doesn’t do anything, that they’re playing well, they’re playing consistently, people can come through.

“Strangely enough Tristan Nydam and Flynn Downes have bypassed that but if it ends up that they come out of the team and it’s Tom Adeyemi and it’s Skusey and it’s Emyr Huws, then they still need a place to play and the U23s we want to be a good foundation that they can all play in. Not just go in and play in a team which is getting whipped every week.

“So, nobody at this moment in time will be going out on loan until we’ve played the U23s and seen whether it’s going to be beneficial to them going elsewhere or just playing in the U23s.

“I don’t want them going to clubs and not playing. If they go to National League clubs, which is a good standard for them, they can come back, they can go for a month, they can come back if it turns out nobody wants them."

jas0999 added 17:39 - Aug 10 Not surprised, but personally think it's short sighted. We have a number of injury prone players and a significantly smaller squad than last year. A new defender - even if a loan, which I'm not keen on - seems like a must.

Mark added 17:45 - Aug 10 Central defence is my slight worry, as with Webster out we are down to Chambers and Smith as true centre backs and what happens if one or both of those gets injured or suspended? I know Knudsen, Iorfa and Spence can play in a back three, and there is young Woofenden who could be on the bench, but it is a long season.

yorkshire added 19:36 - Aug 10 Think Mick is damed if he does and damed if he doesn't here - some people want to see the youth given a chance over some journeyman however other think we need to add more depth/experience Personally, I think that if Mick - who has been a top flight manager for longer than anyone else likely to comment on here - believes that the likes of Nydam, Downes and others are likely to kick on this season then I am happy with that We don't have the sort of money available - or even the sort of wage structure - to encourage the real high end Championship players (like Asombalonga) so we need to make do with what we have and hope that the team can push on as a whole

RYITFC added 21:37 - Aug 10 If we are going to play 5 at the back, i would say we're most definitely a centre back short & if we are thinking of going 4-4-2 i would say we're a wide player short. Given Mcgoldrick's track record with injuries we could also be a frontman light. So i would expect us to bring in at least a couple more before the window closes.
