McCarthy Now Favourite for Barnsley Manager's Job
Thursday, 8th Feb 2018 11:13

Blues boss Mick McCarthy is now some bookmakers' odds-on favourite for the vacant job at Barnsley, his hometown club where he started his playing career.

Having been very much an outsider in the early betting following Paul Heckingbottom’s departure for Leeds on Tuesday, McCarthy’s odds came in significantly this morning and, at the time of writing, stand at 8/11 with SkyBet and Bet Victor.

With Sky Bet Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley is second favourite at 6/4, current Tykes caretaker-manager Paul Harsley is third at 10/1 with former Leeds, Huddersfield, Preston and Sunderland manager Simon Grayson fourth at 14/1.

McCarthy, who celebrated his 59th birthday yesterday, was born in Barnsley and came through the ranks at Oakwell.

He made his senior debut in 1977 and went on to make 314 appearances, scoring 10 goals, before leaving for Manchester City in 1983, having been part of a side which had climbed from the Fourth to the Second Division.

It’s not the first time McCarthy has been the bookies' favourite for another job during his five-and-a-half-year spell with Town, the Blues boss, who is widely expected to move on when his contract is up in the summer, having been linked with a return to the Republic of Ireland role which he previously occupied between 1996 and 2002 on a couple of occasions.

Real surprise Leeds took Heckingbottom but they get in and sack managers in a blink of an eye...glad we're not like that. As for McCarthy going...this looks a good opportunity for him to go but will he get paid there as much as he does here?

Well, he refused to shake hands with Thatcher so he has some principlesto admire.

Regarding a female candidate please re-read (or read since I think it immediately got sort of lost/overlooked in the soon after ensuing pile of multiple new TWTD articles) my awesome tribute to Fiona McCarthy .(the not soooo serious candidate!) .... and Corinne Diacre (the very serious candidate of mine!) lol here:

Ex-Blue McGreal Impressing Town Bosses - Report 26th Jan 2018 18:58
Former Blues defender and current Colchester United boss John McGreal is reportedly interesting Town as the club look around for a successor to Mick McCarthy. 44

@DirtyDingus
Seeing the latest new i.e. "WhatsMyExSkuse new contract ...with an further option?!" ... this after my double post here, well I NOW completely side with your comment here on this article: " MM will be well amused... and will be chuckling down his sleeve ''ha ha ha they all think I'm leaving", cause this booomb of a new Skusey deal cannot simply be an innocent COINCIDENCE can it ??????????? (Meaning all the while The Dino very teasingly & joyfully is keeping the fans in guessing limbo state regarding his own staying or going!!!!!!!!!!) .... Nahhh me personally think not. The Dino will stay to 2020 ...AT LEAST too!

( hen probably because we imho will LIKELY win/"nick" 7 or 8 of the next ten games, including upending 'Delia's Delightful Donkeys' of Naaarwich, promptly get offered ANOTHER 10 year extension by Indifferent Marcus & Clueless Ian .....and as an ehmmm "extra incentive" will also be promised to get that special thingy named after him i.e. a "fine" secluded road along the Suffolk coast line :-) :-) ,provided of course he keeps ME's corporate tax-deductible little circus here in the Championship the WHOLE bloody time! all as I first mentioned in my super sincere post on Saturday btw LOL)

Super Mick hasn't had much money but he has had a lot of time. How many players has he brought through from the academy to be first team regulars? How many of his signings have been improved by Mick and TC's coaching skills?

The 'careful what you wish for' brigade will be out in force, but I firmly believe we need a change.

On the one hand, McCarthy has kept the club treading water on a shoestring budget in a league that is becoming increasingly expensive to operate in. On the other hand, McCarthy's football is often negative, unadventurous and sometimes downright difficult to watch. He's also not the best manager to promote young talent, something this club relies on to survive. And his relationship with the fans has been strained for a couple of years now, another area where he does himself no favours. Attendances are falling.

All things considered, I believe a fresh approach would breath some life into the club. McCarthy saved us in our time of need and has kept the club ticking over, but we're going nowhere under his leadership.

We know what Barnsley fans do not know. Hoooooooooooffffffffff is just the start. He's an arsonist and then a firefighter putting out his own fires. Be careful what you wish for Barnsley!

You have no idea what I wish fo swn but allow me to tell you. First and foremost I want to see an end of Evans PLC who have no interest in the football side of ITFC whatsoever, their only interest is in using the club to offset tax. Secondly I do not believe McCarthy is the best manager in the world, you will NOT agree as you seem to be contented with boring hoofball and being treated with contempt with his pathetic abuse of the fans. Please don't come back with the no money to spend nonsense because you don't have to play the 'pragmatic' way even with no money ar all. At any other club he would have been out months ago but as he is prepared to go along with the PLC, just pick up his no doubt big wages and not rock the boat he has a job as long as Evans PLC are the owners. I know you be there on Saturday but look around you at the empty seats. We could beat Burton and be 6 points, but a million miles, from the playoffs. But as long as you are happy

So to summarise this evening's debate.

He saved us from near certain relegation, was alright for a bit but is now boring us all to death with his awful brand of football and it's time for a change.

There you go, and not one poster offended 😀

Mick Mac lives in Bromley.

I really dot know what to think anymore. I want the stay away fans back, a full PR, attacking nice style of football and a buzz about that a new manager appointment can bring (sometimes it can be disappointing though)

However, as some posters have said on here McCarthy can attract players does it on a shoe string and we are never in danger of getting relegated.

Part of me fears the worse if he does go, especially on the current Evans Nickel and Dime budget. Who is going to do better? Its Evans that really should go IMO or put out a proper promotion strategy backed by real funds, get rid of puppets like Milne - bring in some real ITFC people and lets get this club rocking again.

The way I see it is that Mick will be here until the end of season.
Barnsley have already appointed a caretaker manager until the end of the season.
So...Barnsley need pay us nothing in 4 months time...why get him now !!!

There has been a lot of discussion around whether Mick has done a great job with a limited budget, but how do we know that we have a limited budget. Mick often boasts about how little he has spent, but has seemed to have asked the owner for money despite Milne expressing that money is available.
Unfortunately expectations come with spending money, and spending money would mean that these players have to play. A prime example here is at CB where a proven CB or CM would mean that Skuse or Chambers need to be dropped.
As we know, this will never happen
Mick is happy to play the martyr when it comes to spending with the 'aren't I doing well against these expensive teams attitude.
Any manager worth his salt would be knocking down Evans door demanding money (because we he has some !!!)
However if you don't ask....you don't get
Just my thoughts !!!

Barnsley won't need to get used to hoofball, they have plenty of money and if MIck gets the job he will be able to bring who he wants to the club. He has had his hands tied continuously at ITFC and more often than not we have had to make do.

MM lives in Kent so unsure why all the "nearer to home" comments....

Im not sure about the "mutual agreement of termination of contract" talk either....if Barnsley want him...they should pay. We will have to pay if we intend to get some of the targets we have talked about.

Personally i would hate it if Mick went to Barnsley, its far too close, surely there is an Antipodean club out there that would take him off our hands!

Those that wang on about hoofball evidently haven't attended games for some time.

On another note, MM's still odds-on but seems to be drifting in the betting for the Barnsley job.

If he goes how many managers will we have to put up with?, remember Keane and Jewel some people have short memories. Micks public relations has been his downfall.

He's not going anywhere. Barnsley have a new owner who I don't think will have any thoughts towards Mick. They'll go foreign'

TimmyH added 11:09 - Feb 9
Just one thing, why do people still think he saved us from 'certain' relegation when 1. we still had a reasonable squad (just some overpaid cling-ons needed to be ousted) 2. It was November when McCarthy came in...

vanmunt added 11:21 - Feb 9
Yesterdays optimism has turned into resignation today he isn't going anywhere.... like others have said, I think the two year extension is more likely.

It was a nice feeling for a while though.
