McCarthy Leaves Town With Immediate Effect - Updated With Audio
Tuesday, 10th Apr 2018 22:16

Town boss Mick McCarthy’s departure with immediate effect has been confirmed. McCarthy, who had been due to stay until his contract is up in the summer, announced his departure at the end of his post-match press conference with the club releasing a statement soon afterwards.

“I spoke with Marcus at the weekend and we agreed that it was in the best interests for me, the players and the club that I move on now,”he told the club site.

“I said I would see the season out but it’s been a new experience and it’s not one I have been enjoying to be honest.

“I have continued to do my job to the best of my ability but there is something missing and I’m not comfortable with that.

“I have had a great time here and worked with some great people and to all those who have given me wonderful support over the last five and a half years - and there are many - I want to put on record my personal thanks.

“The players here can look forward to a new challenge with whoever comes in and I want to wish them, the staff and the club the best of fortunes.

“I’ll also be looking forward to a new challenge elsewhere. I’ve still got a lot of football in me.”

Assistant boss Terry Connor has also left the club with immediate effect following tonight’s match. It's understood the duo will say their goodbyes to the players at Playford Road on Thursday.

Town will announce who will be the caretaker-manager in the next day or so but we understand Bryan Klug and Geraint Williams will be put in temporary charge.

“I want to reiterate my thanks to Mick and Terry for their fantastic service to this football club,” owner Marcus Evans added.

“I have always enjoyed a good relationship with Mick and that continues and on behalf of the football club I want to wish him and Terry the very best of luck going forward. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see them back here next season in the away dressing room!”

McCarthy announced his departure, which would have happened whatever tonight's result, at the end of his press conference when asked about the fans’ reaction to debutant Barry Cotter’s substitution, which you can hear below.

“A disgraceful reaction to that. But listen, I won’t have to listen to that again because that’s my last game, I’ll see you when I see you. I’m out of here,” he said as he got up and walked out.

Tonight's game was McCarthy's 279th in charge of the Blues, the 59-year-old having taken charge on November 1st 2012. Of those games, he won 105, drew 78 and lost 96, a win percentage of 37.63.

Earlier in the press conference, McCarthy had commented on the game: “I thought the lads were excellent, the first half was a tough game. Kieffer had hit the cross-bar, we both had chances. I thought we got better and better and was really thrilled with the result.

“We’ve had a clean sheet so that’s pleasing. We’ve not been good at home recently so we might have been a bit nervy, I don’t know, but we played really well in the second half and we should have won by more in the end.

“Jonas is a really good player for us and I’m delighted for him. Jonas is a proper player and I’m delighted for him.”

McCarthy was asked what was left to play for with the Barnsley win mathematically meaning the Blues cannot now make the play-offs: “Pride, points, always want to win.”

Adding to his earlier comments on the performance, he added: “I hope [fans will have left having enjoyed it]. It was a good performance and Barry Cotter caught everybody’s eye, another one that it looks like we’ve done really well on.

“He’s just got personality, he’s got a twinkle in his eye, he’s got technical ability, he’s quick and powerful, he’s got everything to be a player, I’ve just fancied him ever since he walked through the door. He came as a centre-half, I said ‘No chance, he’ll be a right-back’ and that’s what he’s going to be.

“He’s going to be a good player for Ipswich Town. He’s been a really good signing. If that’s his standard on his debut then he's only going to get better.

“He’s great, he’s not a shy boy, he’s a great fella, that’s why I put him in, I knew it wouldn’t faze him, he’s got really good ability as well.”

Was his withdrawal pre-planned? “Not at all, he was knackered. I said to him at half-time, he had his socks down, I said, ‘You tell me if you’re struggling’.

“He’d just let the wide player run on him twice and, of course, he wasn’t going to tell me because he wants to stay on the pitch.

“And that’s the art of management, knowing when to take him off and Wardy was brilliant, he was great,” he added before being asked about the fans’ reaction to the change.

Interesting watching the game, as someone has said before, the players seemed to be playing with a lot more freedom, almost as if they know he was off.
Players will always defend current managers whilst in situ but the performance of some of the players spoke volumes, they knew he was ex mick and played with freedom.
A lot of the blame as how ITFC ended were we are is ME`s,a weak clueless owner who should have sacked Mick after the lincoln debacle. Lets hope he has learnt some lessons and most importantly recognises the DNA of Ipswich Town Football Club.
This appointment is probably his most important, listen to people who have a deep rooted connection with the club, don`t push them away as you have done in the past, they are your saviour.

@Elto (+ many other mourners of the same "Mick DESERVES Respect!" persuasion)

Good old saying that one, don't you agree? :-) :-) ...but seriously @Elto & others:
Respect is the very epitome of a "two-way street"!!!!!!! In order to gain respect, you darn well have to be a giver of respect as well! (...and in Mick's case we are not talking here about MERELY handing it out pretty unconditionally and almost in overdoses to the beloved favorites & 'Proper Blokes' among his selection of employees i.e. players!).

Oh and as I am certain can be found somwhere within any decent "Leadership " and/or
"Respect" ABC: "Leaving your ego behind is a **crucial** element too in getting & maintaining respect!" :::: Ego is a social mask that thrives on approval, control and
power... because basically it's grounded in fear. Hence Let Go! of worrying about whether you're getting the credit you & your imposing ego THINK you deserve. Instead focus completely on your mission, your tactics/strategy to achieve said mission & your array of "components" at hand -- and keeping in line with the notorious Mick's ITFC analogy of *unjustifiable* favorization,'Proper Blokes' and *recurring* undaring & negative hedgehog tactics -- thus always deploy a WINNING mentality & chose only the most useful & very best among said "components", obviously!

(Cause ANYTHING else i.e. just choosing the same tried & familiar methods and/or 2nd or 3rd best "components" simply due to lame personal attachments, stubbornness or utter planlessness!, will not only make the in this instance: other players, feel unmotivatedly overlooked & gradually sulky, but the audience or customers to your "end-product" will eventually become very susceptible to end up disgruntled too! all leading to a distinctive lack of respect (and even morale!) in the long run, in and of itself.)

And so I could actually carry on and on with a plethora of pretty *factual* examples & analogies of how the SUPPOSEDLY praiseworthy Mick 'The One & Only Messiah' McCarthy's downfall & specifically his "lack of respect" from many among the now very fed-up 'Naysayers', yours truly included, was caused ENTIRELY, repeat ENTIRELY by his own actions (or lack hereof!) ... and yes I take the liberty to exclude from the equation & the argument those selected FEW super imbeciles who chanted wildly obscene & sexual repugnant remarks at him during for instance the Brentford game!!!

"Normal" heckling HOWEVER, is quite **sadly** a part of any, especially rich, pro sport
nowadays!

And besides there is really no getting around that in the vast majorities of pro team sport venues you as a paying customer are "in principal" actually ENTITLED to quite a lot of basic demonstrative things -- the most non-basic & grave exceptions being of course outright hooliganism and other violent behavior -- whether anybody else in the stadium darn like it or not! (Just for the record: Personally in 9 times out of 10 I vehemently don't like it!) And if you as a manager or seasoned player are too thin-skinned to handle this ...well tough luck pal! cause then you are simply in the wrong type of business. And again a generally very lucrative business (compared to other lines of work) at that! Period!

PS: And lastly regarding this stupefying 'Mick alibi no. 1' still reccuringly floating around: "That he didn't have any money" (true enough in itself obviously) and thus should largely therefore be exempt of ANY criticism whatsoever cause he in a sense performed quote "miracles"... PLEAZZZE! PLEAZZZE people! Money has next to nothing to do with pleasing your customers and most importantly: Playing with both a winning outlook & tactical mindset wrapped around some delightful offensive, entertaining and successful play-off and even promotion-capable football in the process!
I could recite many examples here too, from home or abroad, but let me simply suffice to name the most recent and perhaps grandest examples in our own division and thus say... the competent ex-Dortmund youth coach led Huddersfield of 2016/2017 and this campaign's "Shots on Target' crazy and just wildly offensively impressive Millwall of 2017/2018.

And on these looongwinded *weighty* notes NOW let me thus see them as previously allured to 740 downvotes i.e. the perceivable TOTAL capacity of (narrow-minded) die hard Mick-Inners here on TWTD... :-) lol :-)

Mixed feelings to be honest.

I think MM was a few years past his sell-by date and was, to say the least, coasting. In fact, he sometimes seemed stultified by fear of losing, rather than passion for winning.

On the other hand, I have no desire to abuse the bloke. He probably did what he did/made the decisions he did out of a sincere desire to serve the club, coupled with his slightly unpredictable heart-on-his-sleeve personality.

Looking back over the lacklustre parade of managers we've endured over the past decade or so, I think history might paint him in a slighter brighter light.

It's time to move forwards though and not waste time raking over the bones of this debacle. I therefore wish Mick and TC well, but I am glad we now have the chance to indulge in a little optimism for a while. Although, of course, I still personally have concerns about ME's overall aptitude for ownership.

All in all, a bitter-sweet morning-after. Mick has done the right thing now and so has the club. Onwards and upwards my friends. COYB

Lightning blue agree with your post 100% I go back a bit before you.
Ipswich Towns fans were respected all over the Country.
When we travelled Europe in that great cup run we drank and sang alongside home fans in bars all over Europe.
Unfortunately the advent of social media where underachievers and other moronic factions of a group of people can vent their spleen and gently shovel their views often peddled as fact onto the fire, until it explodes and they get their way has had a large part to play in the final act of this particular saga.
I fear for our Club I've supported for 45 years, once mob rule wins we are on a downward spiral what next will they vent their anger on.

Look he has gone, of that most of us are glad! He should of left 2 years ago, his contract extension was a big mistake!

All this Arguing between fans has to stop, we need to move forward now together, to move forward we may need to take a step back backwards or sidewards! Lets remember who we are and what our club stands for. AS sung by the lovely Laura Wright, come on you blues!

I cant bring myself to thank the guy for his efforts....Played 279...won 105...drew 78...Lost 96 and destroyed the very soul of the club. My biggest problem with him was that he failed to confront ME to invest in the playing staff. He also failed to "Believe" in our youth.

On wards and upward.....

Think its a shame he went the way he has but we need change and it was only prolonging the inevitable. Thanks for clearing up all the mess left by RK and Jewel MM and stabilising our club but the time was right to go.

I agree Swn98. It's a sad day personally. I liked the man. I feared after Saturday's game he would go. I was at that game and the behaviour by some people during and after the game especially (mostly middle aged men from what I saw), may have accelerated his departure. Got back to my home in London at 0120 last night. His reaction at the end of the press conference is hardly surprising given the moronic behaviour of some of the fans.. Wish him luck for the future.

lighting blue: Let's get one thing straight......the fans did not boo the young player coming off or coming on, which was Cotter going off & Ward coming on! That didn't happen, I was there, so sadly you're wrong dear boy!
The boo's were in utter frustration that in a dark season, we finally found a shining light in Barry Cotter, it was frustration in taking him off 10 minutes into the second half, another 10-15 minutes & that would have been fine.
Cotter had an outstanding 55 minutes & really treated the crowd to some lovely football. Seeing the standing ovation he got when he left the field said it all. Had you been there & stayed until the end, Cotter even joined the North Stand in milking the applause, he loved, we loved it.
Get things in perspective, please.

I like Mick, he has done some very good things for the club, and wish him the very best for the future! At the same time we need to step up and try something new (and more things need to change at the club, from top to bottom).

All the sympathy and feeling sorry fro MM a man only interested in himself and will not give to hoots about Ipswich from now on is remarkable . I will thank MM and TC for all of his efforts but this split should have been done a couple of years ago as MM and Ipswich were never a fit .
IMO we have not progressed in MM 's time here at all , he turned a squad who had lost their way around , but they were the best squad in MM's time here. I also think we less negative tactics to stop opposition rather than play football we could have achieved more regardless of spending power , so thank you MM but this is good news for the club

bohslegend added 08:19 - Apr 11
1RWR who do you think signed Cotter to the club in the first place?
Fans booing at home is a disgrace for whatever reason.
And now that the mob has been successful, this is now what we can look forward to every time they don't like the look of someone. And those that said they were staying away because of MM will no doubt come back in their droves now as we look forward to life in the lower leagues unless THE REAL PROBLEM, Marcus Evans, is resolved. But I think that will happen when it's already too late.

1RWR added 08:31 - Apr 11
bohslegend: I fully realise who signed him, but, you're missing the point!
Frustration at seeing a shining light being taken off in what must be one of the darkest years in ITFC.
Don't blame the fans for showing their frustration, doesn't mean they don't love the club!
Your last paragraph is pure drivel, sorry.

Such 'vocal' passion from the 'silent majority', what a pity you didn't put it to better use inside the 'Ipswich Library'! Maybe there hasn't been much to 'shout and get passionate' about for some 3 long boring years!!!

The 'uncontrolled passion' has even got to SWN, as a trip down 'good old memory lane' has come 'flooding ( not too many tears one hopes ) back'! When the 'connection' lies on a multifaceted is anyone's guess!!! Such comparisons are mind boggling, although I am an 'unfortunate limited numbskull' so maybe that's why I can't join the dots ! Wasn't it a lousy stab in the dark when my 'numbskull' predicted another season of '14th mediocracy'!!! In the high of 'wild rage' SWN wants some 'to do one'!....where to? A trip, I'm assuming, down to Portman Rd alongside the returning 'thousands presently in exile'!!!

Even the 'easter resurrection' of bohslegend has 'appeared to show us the light'....please forgive me ( and all 'numbskulls' ) for I know not what I do! And John Wayne concludes in that epic biblical story, "McCarthy truly was the son of football"! Don't quote me on that!

'Your man' has gone and Ipswich Town FC will live on well beyond the last 3 years of 'numb-braining' 'football'!!!! Step forth 'all you good good people of Suffolk' and multiple Portman Rd!
