Bristol City Webster Link Revived
Tuesday, 26th Jun 2018 20:16

Bristol City are again being linked with a move for Blues central defender Adam Webster.

According to HITC Sport, Robins boss Lee Johnson sees Webster, 23, as a replacement for Aden Flint, who is close to joining Middlesbrough.

The story is a revival of a report which first appeared in January when Flint was previously tipped to leave Ashton Gate. At the time the Robins were said to be ready to offer the Blues £4 million, while one source following on from today's initial report values Webster at a wholly unrealistic £2 million.

Webster is contracted to Town until the summer of 2019 but with the Blues having an option to keep him for a further season.

Highly-rated Webster has been in and out of the Town side since signing from Portsmouth in the summer of 2016 due to a succession of injuries and the Blues are unlikely to be in a rush to sell the former England U18 and U19 international, who is viewed as someone whose value is likely to increase substantially once he has had a long run in the team and has gained more Championship experience.

Why would we sell him we are low on defenders as it is

Bristol City linked with a £4M buy. Would be nice! No point of selling as the money wouldn't be reinvested.

£4 million for him....in todays market.... his left boot isn't valued at that.

Do one City. Why would we sell one of the few ball players we have.

Would be stupid to let him go. Such a fantastic ball playing centre back. Feel like Hurst will be a big fan of him.

When you have championship players with values of 20 30 million now, 4 million would be an insult... he has all the attributes that fans want to see signed, young, youth England experience, passing defender...etc etc.. we would then be looking in the market for a replacement so what's the point? Had his injury issues recently but his value is certainly not going to decrease from 4mil for a few years so keep hold of him...

When he is able to play, he's a sound player. Combines well with Knudsen and Spence and does do the odd run forward. We'd be stupid to sell him, we are low on players as it is.

How comes Bristol City have got £4m to spend and we haven't?

Out of all the sick notes, Webster's the only one I'd keep as I personally rate him very highly. He has outdoubted ability and I'm hoping he gets a sustained run of games to show us what he's all about.
Think we should offload Huws and Ade, as next season will be the same ole, same ole, trust me on that one, you'll see!! (Lol)

Given that we'll probably have to cash in on someone to pay for a couple of wingers I'd much rather Webster go than Bart or Waghorn.
I still think Spence and Knudsen should be seen as central defenders anyway. I found them to play the ball just as well as when we played Webster and not look out of their depth.

*shrugs* I guess it depends on how deep the owner's pockets will be without selling someone.

Well they've just got £7m for their player...so that's a starting point if they really want Webster.

Don't think selling one of our assets would send right message don't think this will happen.

@ Tony Humes - your 'In' column should reflect those coming through the ranks, returning from long term injury and back from loans. The out column shouldn't include those who were never really in the first team.

So I see it as:

IN

Chalobah
Dozzell
Huws
Emmanuel
Downes
Woolfenden
Cotter

OUT

Connolly
Iorfa
Carter -Vickers
Bru (Didn't play much)
Gleeson
Hyam (Most of season Injured)
Caryol(Most of season injured)
McGoldrick (Most of season injured)
Celina

I may have missed a few but I think we are doing better than 15 out and 1 in.

I think it will be difficult not to sell. Hurst has been open to the reality that he cant buy until he sells, and, if we are honest, Webster would probably bring in more money than anyone else in our squad. It would be a shame to pass on such a player, who is an investment for the future of the club and may have the potential to play at a higher level but equally the money would allow Hurst to invest in two or three lower league players who could prove to be worth this in a couple of years while putting his own stamp on the squad. We must support him either way.

If we can get £4-5m and then immediately spend HALF of that on getting Matt Clarke back in the building then we will have profited, maybe have at least as good a defender on the books and am sure will make more money going forward on Mr Clarke who has looked the real deal down on the South Coast, as many within our Club always suspected he would.

Whilst ME is reluctant to spend, there have to be examples where you can be almost certain that buying a player equals a good investment too. And what business man does not like a good investment ?!

Keep Webster, but if not then get Matt Clarke in and still give PH cash to spend......and let;'s not have talk of wages with big numbers off the wage bill this year already!

Hurst may well have picked up a trick from MM on the “Have to sell first”. If you plead poverty or be cagey about money to spend unlike with Keane and Jewell we don't get ripped
Off. As soon as you state what you have to spend or that you have cash to spend the price doubles.

Make it £5m and take it - as long as Hurst is allowed to re-invest it.

Far too injury prone for my liking - we badly need stability in the middle of the defence.

Don't know about you lot. But I'm looking forward to seeing our “new” striker next season.
Freddie Sears.
Totally ruined under MM.
Hope he stays.
