Town Confirm Harrison Signing
Monday, 23rd Jul 2018 20:03

Town have confirmed the signing of striker Ellis Harrison from Bristol Rovers on a two-year deal with the club having an option for a further season.

The 24-year-old joins the Blues for a fee in the region of £750,000 which could rise to £1.25 million if top-up clauses are triggered.

“He gives us something different at the top end of the pitch,” Town boss Paul Hurst told the club site.

“He’s a youngish player who has come up through the leagues and last season he put together a year when he scored 14 goals.

“He’s athletic, leads the line well. He has a good work ethic, good mobility and has a good leap on him.

“We are getting a player that will be thinking he has something to prove at this level and I like that. That’s the sort of player we are trying to bring in. He will definitely give us another option up front.”

Rovers manager Darrell Clarke told the Pirates' official site: "Ellis has been a fantastic servant to the club over the years and I'd like to thank him for all his efforts during his time here.

"He will be more sorely missed on and off the pitch and I wish him every success in the future."

Harrison himself says he's looking forward to testing himself at Championship level.

"I'm really excited and I can't wait to get going now," he told iFollow Ipswich. "I think now is the right time for me to push on and try to see how far I can get in my career.

"The gaffer has brought me in, but that doesn't mean I'm going to play so I have to show him what I can do.

"Playing against the gaffer's team at Shrewsbury was horrible to say the least. They were so fit, so strong and hopefully we can be that team this year.

"I'll bring hard work to the team. I like to chip in with some goals here and there, but I'll be bringing hard work."

Harrison, who will wear the Town number 10 shirt, was left out of the Bristol Rovers side which faced Forest Green Rovers in a friendly on Saturday, the clubs having agred the fee.

The former Wales U21 international was at Town this morning to discuss personal terms and to undergo a medical.

Harrison becomes Paul Hurst's fourth Blues signing and the second he has paid a fee for after fellow Welshman Gwion Edwards, who was recruited from Peterborough for a similar sum last week, joining free recruit Jordan Roberts and season-long loanee Trevoh Chalobah.

Harrison, who will make his first appearance in a Town shirt at the KM Dons on Tuesday, came through the youth system at the Memorial Stadium and has played all his senior games for the Pirates aside from a short spell on loan at Hartlepool where he made two starts early in 2016.

Last season the Newport-born forward scored 14 goals. In total for Bristol Rovers he has made 116 starts and 88 sub appearances, netting 49 times.

Love the comment in the video interview. "Playing against Shrewsbury last year was HORRIBLE. They were so fit and strong. Hopefully we can be that team this year."

I just watched his showreel of goals and he is not the kind of player I was expecting. I assumed that he was a target man sort of player, but he seems very lightweight and quick footed who can certainly finish a 1 on 1. I don't see him as a hold up man at all. It will be nice to see his pace. Although I think he will quickly realise how tough the centre halves are at this level. Hopefully he can adjust to this and have a great town career. Welcome Ellis.

Now I'm not being negative but why are people thinking this is a terrific signing? Basing it on a YouTube clip? Not convinced unfortunately, goal record rubbish and all he said he'll offer in his interview is hard work. Sorry but need much more than this to compete

Why are people knocking this lad when he hasn't kicked a ball for town yet. Come on perk up, we've finally got a manager who wants to put speed & creativity onto the pitch.

I'm sorry if they aren't 31 year old Irish men, or great blokey blokes, but I am more excited for this season to see Hurst's new vision for the Town's future.

Lets get out of this godforsaken rut that we have found ourselves in, embrace the new up and coming generation of players, and support the hell out of our club.

Arseholes and elbows gentlemen please!!!!

jabber - we had four Welshmen in the late 50's (before my time - just), Doug Rees, John Elsworthy, Billy Reed and Derek Rees.

Undoubtedly one huge factor why Hurst has been appointed is his knowledge of lower league players. Something I've advocated, combined with the development our youth, as the way forward for our club.

Time will tell if we have the right manager to take us positively forward, what I will say is, Hurst is definitely his 'own man', and to date, his recruitment 'policy' has been far uplifting compared to anything witnessed at Portman Rd for over three years or more!

Wishing all Hurst's 'hungry young guns' all the best going forward with Ipswich Town Football Club !

Maybe we can get around the same figure for Garner and won't need to lose Waghorn.

The England team under a young manager, bringing in his own, disregarding the old, unless they were good enough, did us proud in the World Cup.
A young Ipswich Town Manager doing the same, knows what he likes, keeps what he wants and go after what players he knows that are needed for the Club.
Could be a learning curve for us all, but let's just support the new horizon?

People say we beat Blackburn to this guy. I haven't heard they even made a bid, so cant see we beat them to anything. How about some defenders now Hurst?

Exciting signing, well done to all.
Still would like to see some proven Championship level or higher players join us for a bit of experience. Slightly concerned we're building too much of a budget team and taking a little too many gambles on lower leaguers without the experience, however driven and hungry they might be. I guess now's their chance to get that experience and see how they hold up. I expect one or two to fall by the wayside, but if one or two become gems, then its all worth it. Magical Vegas is not the only gambling going on at the club.
Exciting times!
