Hurst: Adeyemi Will Have to Grit his Teeth and Get on With It
Thursday, 26th Jul 2018 16:30

Blues boss Paul Hurst says midfielder Tom Adeyemi will have to “grit his teeth” and get back to training as he believes the 26-year-old is in danger of having another injury-hit campaign.

Adeyemi, who joined the Blues last summer after being released by Cardiff following a successful season on loan at Rotherham, made only four starts and one sub appearance last season with illness and injury hampering him in pre-season and at the start of a campaign before a recurring hamstring problem saw his 2017/18 end in October.

The former Norwich youngster was back in training at the start of pre-season and played in the friendly against Kilmarnock in Spain but hasn't featured since.

“It’s an achilles,” Hurst said, explaining that the current injury isn’t related to last year’s long-term problem.

“Tom, because I think he’s had so many injuries, he finds it difficult to get back out there and as far as I’m concerned it’s getting to a point where he’s going to have to grit his teeth and get on with it.

“As harsh as that may sound, he’s at risk of just having another season already of not playing enough football and he’s missed far too much already. Hopefully we can get him back out there and he can stay fit.”

Does he believe the injuries have made Adeyemi over-cautious and wary of returning to training too quickly and exacerbating the problem? “There’s obviously something there, but at the end of the day there’s another player in the squad that’s got something very similar who has trained every day, so I want him to get out there.

“We all have different pain thresholds, I understand that, but I’m wanting people that I can rely on, that we’re going to go to war with.

“When he first dropped out my understanding was that he was just going to miss a couple of days but I haven’t seen him back out on the training pitch yet. I’m wanting to get him back out there if he’s going to be part of the plans.”

Asked whether the physios have said Adeyemi’s all right to get back out there, Hurst added: “Almost, but like I say it’s difficult because they’re not feeling that pain. But, at the same time, like I say, we’ve got a player with a very similar issue and hasn’t missed a day’s training.”

loving this new approach kick up the bum type attitude, one or 2 others are the same ,is it the attitude of the player, or just bad luck? notice young dozzell is on the mend, how come bishop/adeye huws etc are such long termers.

Totally agree with PH - Adeyemi needs to have a long hard look in the mirror, then grow a pair and get out on the training field - instead of taking the fans hard earned money whilst staying on the treatment table!

Don't know whether anyone else remembers this but we had a manager some odd years ago with a penchant for publicly airing grievances with players and laying into the club's previous management team. His name was Roy Keane and that all ended FABULOUSLY.

I,m assuming the other player out every day training while not 100% is probably Teddy whom everybody would love to see alongside Andre

This is just the sort of soundbite fans love to hear but it's dubious management at any level or profession. I'm sorry but this stuff stays inhouse. This needs to be a serious and frank two way discussion with the player. Adeyemi, as frustrating as the injuries have been, seems an honest lad and i wouldnt be too pleased with my manager treating a friend and colleague like that in public. It puts pressure on everyone and if we start slow this kind of thing would backfire very very fast in the dressing room. Small thing and on the whole Hurst has gone about things great and been harsh but fair. This is a bit Roy Keane though.

Terry Nutkins Hurst is basically trying to get a player who has played 5 games since joining to grow a pair.

He's not doing a Roy Keane who basically said the whole team was rubbish.

Adeyemi needs to grow a pair.

Could this be the David McGoldrick replacement we've been waiting for?

Well in the Physio's room anyway!

Talbs i understand that and i'm not saying he is wrong in terms of his thoughts. But it is face to face with the player not in public. Its browny points with fans but Adeyemi is his staff member and you treat your staff better than that. I dont think its a massive thing but its one of the few poor things he's said.

Terry Nutkins I hear what your saying and may have a point but perhaps Hurst thinks Adeyemi needs a bit of a push whereas others wouldn't react positively if challenged the same way?

Hurst seems to be a manager that regularly challenges his players whereas McCarthy would defend them whatever the result which I think grinded on people. It certainly did me after watching what I did last season.

I think he's desperate to get some of these long term injuries back which is understandable with the squad so threadbare. Some of them hardly kicked a ball for a year must be frustrating.

When Adeyemi was initially linked to us a lot of people pointed out that his injury record was deeply concerning....the club went ahead and signed him anyway which was a gamble on the part of the club...a gamble that hasn't paid off.

I do feel for Adeyemi...at the end of the day it's hard to control injury in the same way that it's hard to control illness. But should we ever really have signed him?

PH may be new to Ipswich but not to management. Has shown excellent man management at his previous clubs so why doubt his approach. And anyway, there had to be something not right with the lad for Cardiff to let him go as he certainly doesn't lack ability. Though ability alone won't get you in any team

Cynical of me but I wonder how “injured” some players would be if it was pay as you play?

100% behind Hurst here.

Another strange and not required comment for me by a junior man manager who is in danger of creating serious early unrest within his team. Be careful Mr Hurst this is not the best direction to take so openly slating the very players that week in and week out are going to get in the trenches for you?

Wooly, what are you talking about 'the very players that week in week out get in the trenches for you'? We're talking about Tom Adeyemi, who hasn't been anywhere near the trenches since he signed a year ago! He's still picking the same pay as the others who have tho. That would annoy me if I was a first team regular.
