Town Targeting Walters Loan Return
Wednesday, 29th Aug 2018 15:24

TWTD understands Town are targeting the return of former skipper Jon Walters on loan from Burnley.

We understand discussions regarding the move are ongoing with the deal expected to be completed ahead of Friday's loan deadline.

The 34-year-old has been largely out of the first-team picture at Turf Moor since joining them from Stoke City last summer and has been made available for loan.

Republic of Ireland international Walters joined the Blues from Chester City in January 2007 and made 132 starts and 14 sub appearances, scoring 31 goals before moving on to Stoke for £2.75 million in August 2010 after falling out with then-manager Roy Keane.

Manager Paul Hurst has been looking for another striker ahead of the deadline at 5pm on Friday and confirmed at his press conference that he had made an enquiry regarding Derby’s former Norwich striker Cameron Jerome.

“He was one that we enquired about, certainly,” Hurst confirmed with Jerome, who is set to join Goztepe in Turkey, reportedly not interested in a move to the Blues due to his Canaries connections.

Asked what type of striker he is after, the Blues manager added: “We’re looking at someone who has got a physical presence, certainly. And if possible the experience alongside that.

“But at the same time, what you want in an ideal world and what you can actually get don’t always come together, so we’ll see if we can make a deal like that happen.”

I think the people and that includes myself who have committed about the Keane and sickness bug which led to Walters leaving were only saying it out of jest. I agree that he was fantastic for the club and he was in his day one of the best players in the championship at the time. Proof is in the pudding about his quality that he played a significant number of games and seasons with stoke in the premiership. As said I appreciate what he was as a player.
You also must consider that he must appreciate what we did for him as a player when we signed him from Chester city.
All said and done I'd like him back

I think that Jon Walters has been (so far!) our most gifted striker post-Marcus Stewart - whom I recall, incidentally, giving Town fans at Exeter (2010, 2-3) a truly classy acknowledgement after the game (Walters was sick and missed the game - also, to put it kindly, he and the dark lord were having problems). It's hard to see how we could meet possible wage demands. But he would surely be a good addition to a team of our profile, and must be well worth a punt, at least for this season. Assuming he is fit, my only doubt would be that given our (excellent) commitment to a high pressing game he would surely need to play as a second striker, which PH has so far been reluctant to deploy.

I think for one season and one season only he may be the answer to our prayers. I have always admired him no matter who he was playing for, great servant for Stoke, get it done please.

Young but inexperienced. Passed it but with experience. There must be something in between!

There is! But we can't afford it.

Has anyone thought JW might fancy a return here for a few months?
Gets him out on the park playing, appreciative crowd, I think he quite fancies it.
Can't do any harm for either of us.

If he is fully fit and ready to go and IF he plays up front to help out are inexperienced lads this will be a great move.

Get him and win the appeal and will be a good day and set us up nicely for Sunday

this would be good.

shame about Jerome. Yes, an ex canarie but I remember him causing us a few problems whenever we played them. was physical and fast and found the net well.

Let's hope Walters is fit, a raring to go.... if we sign him.
