Town Targeting Walters Loan Return
Wednesday, 29th Aug 2018 15:24

TWTD understands Town are targeting the return of former skipper Jon Walters on loan from Burnley.

We understand discussions regarding the move are ongoing with the deal expected to be completed ahead of Friday's loan deadline.

The 34-year-old has been largely out of the first-team picture at Turf Moor since joining them from Stoke City last summer and has been made available for loan.

Republic of Ireland international Walters joined the Blues from Chester City in January 2007 and made 132 starts and 14 sub appearances, scoring 31 goals before moving on to Stoke for £2.75 million in August 2010 after falling out with then-manager Roy Keane.

Manager Paul Hurst has been looking for another striker ahead of the deadline at 5pm on Friday and confirmed at his press conference that he had made an enquiry regarding Derby’s former Norwich striker Cameron Jerome.

“He was one that we enquired about, certainly,” Hurst confirmed with Jerome, who is set to join Goztepe in Turkey, reportedly not interested in a move to the Blues due to his Canaries connections.

Asked what type of striker he is after, the Blues manager added: “We’re looking at someone who has got a physical presence, certainly. And if possible the experience alongside that.

“But at the same time, what you want in an ideal world and what you can actually get don’t always come together, so we’ll see if we can make a deal like that happen.”

Yes please. Just what the team needs and with an ITFC connection too. I'm sure he's still got a lot to offer so I'm overjoyed. This is just about the best signing in that position we could have hoped for and made. Well done to everyone who was involved in making this happen. And with Tilt coming too and Huws back we will be stronger through the spine of the whole team. Quite frankly we will be a different proposition than the team we've been putting out in the last few weeks. Expect results to improve rapidly.

I'm so excited a little bit of wee just came out!

I'd have Walters in over Jerome, far more of a work ethic about his play and as we know can knock in the odd goal, and would be good for some of the youngsters to learn from him.

Not a lot to lose at all ; this man dwarfs RK in terms of integrity ,so do not blame him for what occurred , remember RK was even recorded for Radio Suffolk. confirming JW was to,play that Saturday but reneged ; who on earth ever trusted RK with ITFC must have realised it was a mistake / gross error .
JW may have lost a little in pace but his enthusiasm , commitment ,knowledge and experience can bring loads of benefits to a side sadly lacking in nouse all over the place .PH must ,however ,be prepared for JW to have firm opinions which he'll want to exptess (but in our situation any contribution such as this must be beneficial )
Get him in !
Up the Blues

The rumour in the North was Walters was on £50k per week with Stoke.Accepting he'll take a pay cut,be surprised to see this happen unless Burnley continue to pay the salary.

In my opinion we never saw the best of Walters at Ipswich because of a dodgy manager. At Stoke he always impressed me with his runs, positioning and team play. He may be 34 and possibly on wages that Burnley would have to contribute to but if he wants to come he would give us what we lack right now until our newbies start to click.

As a Town fan from the lotteries Stoke still have Crouch who does a job at 37!
Jon is 34 he is not a carthorse and would do us a good job while the younger lads get used to the championship

Providing Jon still has the legs I'd take him all day. Exactly the striker we need to kick on.

Get him in, ready for Sunday. Please!

Swn98 ...... just thought you may need a reminder that you do not have to like the poster - to agree with a post.... !! Equally it's not obligatory to down vote the poster each time, for the same reason.

You've obviously not ‘cottoned on' to that - so just saying .... !!!!!! - or is there something more seriously wrong .... ??

Can't believe it's eight years ago he left the club! Feels like yesterday he was with Town.
Exactly the sort of player we need at this moment in time. Please make it happen!

Would be delighted if this happened! He was my favourite Town player when he was here. And he knows where the net is.... fingers crossed he signs.

Think either him or Jerome will be good additions. Are both proven Championship goal scorers thst can put themselves about and also hold the ball up. Don't forget this season we do not seem to ever keep position very well in the oppositions half or hold it up there. Can only be a bonus on either account.

wasn't on my radar,,but yes get him in ,Always rated him highly and feel sure he would make a positive impact, wouldnt expect a cart load of goals from him now but im sure he could get his share. As for Swn98 , his comment sums him up , only posts ''sniping comments '' nothing remotely constructive, probably had to google to get Ray Crawford, ,shame he had to refer to another Ipswich Legend in a sneering way , but what do you expect from someone who brags about going to Spain , jeeeeeeez how sad . Scummer troll.

Great news if we can finalise a deal.
Was always a favourite of mine and he always put in the proverbial shift.
I can remember with great fondness when he took Bristol City apart at Portman Road. I believe we got six that day and Walters was a major contributor.
PS age does not matter. Kevin Phillips was still knocking the goals in with ease when he was 39!

It's a yes to Mr Walters from me...make it so.

If it's for one season it would be a good move. A player who probably has never quite got the recognision he's deserved. Not too bothered about the age, obviously not a long term plan! As has been pointed out above, Peter Crouch isn't exactly a spring chicken and he's kept going, whilst the likes of Andrea Pirlo was 38 and still one of the worlds best midfielders, when making his last career move over to New York. Add on to that the things the younger guys can learn from listening and playing with him, should benefit the team.
