Town Targeting Walters Loan Return
Wednesday, 29th Aug 2018 15:24

TWTD understands Town are targeting the return of former skipper Jon Walters on loan from Burnley.

We understand discussions regarding the move are ongoing with the deal expected to be completed ahead of Friday's loan deadline.

The 34-year-old has been largely out of the first-team picture at Turf Moor since joining them from Stoke City last summer and has been made available for loan.

Republic of Ireland international Walters joined the Blues from Chester City in January 2007 and made 132 starts and 14 sub appearances, scoring 31 goals before moving on to Stoke for £2.75 million in August 2010 after falling out with then-manager Roy Keane.

Manager Paul Hurst has been looking for another striker ahead of the deadline at 5pm on Friday and confirmed at his press conference that he had made an enquiry regarding Derby’s former Norwich striker Cameron Jerome.

“He was one that we enquired about, certainly,” Hurst confirmed with Jerome, who is set to join Goztepe in Turkey, reportedly not interested in a move to the Blues due to his Canaries connections.

Asked what type of striker he is after, the Blues manager added: “We’re looking at someone who has got a physical presence, certainly. And if possible the experience alongside that.

“But at the same time, what you want in an ideal world and what you can actually get don’t always come together, so we’ll see if we can make a deal like that happen.”

I'd settle for that.A great deal of experience and would help to bring the young strikers on.Go for it.
It would only be for the season so we have nothing to loose.👍

Well he'd certainly put himself about a bit up top & will do a job this season if he's fit.

As regards the other end of the pitch,it's almost September and we've brought in precisely 1 central defender during this transfer window.

Has CCV gone to Swansea or is he still available?..crazy how we've wasted so much time on Tilt.

If Jonny Walters is coming back I hope the town has moved nearer to the North West than it was when he was homesick back in 2010.......

This is great news. He won;t be able to play 90 mins twice a week, but his presence will make a difference and it will spur on the three we have for competition. I would still like to Sears start, alongside Walters, with Jackson or Harriosn to come on when the oppo defence is tiring!

Played 3 leagues games last season, none this.

6 months younger than Murph.

Desperation.

...... it's a YES from me - right now.
Walters has what we need short term anyway, would bring an awful lot of experience with him - sadly lacking at this moment.

Not like we are being linked with any other strikers now is it..?

Sounds like a handy addition.

Can't believe we fannied around and missed out on Tilt. Annoyed about that.

Difficult to knock this if true. What we need, beyond anything else at the moment, is experience, especially up front. He may not play every game, but he would take some pressure off our current young strikers and pass on plenty of knowledge. I guess much depends on how committed Walters would be to the cause, but he is a player that has always worked very hard. Let's just hope he doesn't have to photograph his sick in the toilet this time around!!

Wonder if he will call in sick at all? Still, good to see we are going to replace a 31yo player who we had under contract and scored 10 goals last year with a loan player 3 years older who didnt score any.

Jon Walters was a good servant to our club and it annoys me to see him being knocked by our supporters. He didn't get on with Keane which is why he left or so my understanding is that was the reason rather than being sick or homesick. I would welcome this but only as a short term measure. He's just the man to help settle in the lower league players we have signed!! Let's face it he knows about our local Derbies with Norwich and that is a plus, those we have signed recently haven't a clue about what they entail.

Tractorboybig, you are doing it again! Silly boy!!

Walters is a big yes from me. Jackson and Harrison would learn so much from Walters being around the club

If this is accurate, then looks like a decision taken in desperation. Yes, we need an experienced attacking player with goal-scoring ability. But Walters has no pace. He had no pace even when playing for us all those years ago. Hurst is looking for pace and high energy pressing. What is the incentive for Walters at this late stage in his career to come back to ITFC and play with a bunch of youngsters ? Is he up for it ? His style is "all-in" commitment which is to be commended, but why would he make this move ? don't see it as the right move either for him, or Hurst.

Would be a good signing at the moment. Proven goalscorer for this level. Will score this season more than Harrison and Jackson combined. Unfortunately.
