McAuley Could Join Walters in Returning to Town
Thursday, 30th Aug 2018 13:15

Central defender Gareth McAuley could be the second former Town skipper to return to Portman Road this week with the Blues eyeing a move for 38-year-old.

According to Football Insider, Town are leading the chase for McAuley, a free agent having left West Brom at the end of last season, ahead of Rangers.

TWTD understands that McAuley is indeed among the central defenders the Blues are looking at signing but with other candidates also still under consideration ahead of Friday's 5pm deadline.

Manager Paul Hurst said yesterday that Blackpool’s Curtis Tilt is now “very unlikely” to join Town but AFC Wimbledon skipper Deji Oshilaja is understood to remain a target.

Northern Ireland international McAuley made 126 starts and one sub appearance for the Blues between June 2008 and May 2011.

The Larne-born defender joined the Blues from Leicester for £1.1 million and moved on to West Brom having turned down a new Town contract.

Would be a good experienced head around the place and has a goal in him. Just need David Norris and Pablo to complete the set now.

I think Hurst has realised his recruitment has been poor so far with no players with championship experience and now is relying on the older and experienced lads to come in and help the lower league players we have bought in, personally don't think it should have gotten to this stage as we've sold a couple of our top players for a fair but tbof money it just hasn't been spent well and now we're relying on the loan players again

Haynes Ambrose and Westlake coming back too.

Well, we certainly cannot play MacAuley with Chambers. Would get roasted alive for pace.

Is there any ex town player who hasn't been slated by a section of the home 'support' ?

I'm sorry, although signing 34 year old Walters seems like a good addition - if he stays fit. But a 38 year old? Seriously? Probably not had any type of pre season. Match fit?

I am not obsessed about age..but 38 is a considerable age for a professional footballer..Not sure about this one.

No wonder this site is not popular down at Portman rd! We sign Good hungry lower league players & the moaners say (No Championship experience) we have signed too many! Now Walters plus maybe McAuley & they're too old: Hurst & Evans can't win! Bring back going to football before social media it's making management impossible!

Another older player, but another quality option. Remember Mogga's crucial input in our promotion season? Could be great influence on younger defenders. Get him in as a short term fix.

Stuart Pearce was 40 when he left Man City in June 2002 after joining the year earlier. Teddy Sherringham finished playing for West Ham and joined Colchester at 41 & left at 42. Not saying its right in McAuleys case but can be done.

With all the young lads with lower level experience having been brought in, some are showing that given time, they will develop into players good enough to hold their own at Championship level, if not higher. If we add our own academy recruits who have broken through we have a squad with potential but lacking experience. In this league we do not have the luxury of development time and if we get sucked in to a relegation dog fight will they be able to cope with the mental demands that go with a backs to the wall situation?
The loan signings of Walters and McAuley, should they happen, will give these boys excellent mentoring with their wealth of Championship, Premier League and International experience as well as talking them through games both in defence and attack. This may only be for a few months or the rest of the season but their input could be invaluable. As mentioned in earlier posts, many players have gone on to produce the goods well into their late 30s and 40s - does age really matter if they have kept their physical fitness?
Really, what is there not to like about these potential signings?

This was probably not part of Hurst's plan but as others have said, both McAuley and Walters could have a very valuable role to play while the new arrivals find their feet. McAuley excelled in the PL way beyond my expectations so even at 38 he has something to give and could go on to be a decent coach. It is likely that Hurst is discovering the reality of life at Ipswich so he needs some wise older heads around him.

I have felt this season experience has been lacking, you know Walters and McAuley I'd go for that and it's certainly better than no additions. I'm happy, remember what a star Mogga was for us at the back.
