Trialist Dawkins in U23s Facing Bristol City
Monday, 7th Jan 2019 11:25

Trialist Simon Dawkins is set to play for Town’s table-topping U23s in this afternoon’s game against Bristol City at Playford Road (KO 1pm), while Tristan Nydam and Ben Morris, who are back with the Blues following their loans at St Johnstone and Forest Green Rovers, are also set to feature along with Barry Cotter.

TWTD recently revealed that Dawkins, 31, had been at Playford Road for a couple of weeks, manager Paul Lambert subsequently confirming that he was with the club.

“He's just training,” Lambert said last Monday. “Somebody I knew asked if he could come in and train. He's getting fitter and better, Simon.

“He had a massive season at Derby a few years ago when they were going for promotion. It was no problem for me. I'll just have a look at him and see how he does."

Asked what he likes about the former Tottenham academy youngster, he added: “I just think he's effective. He can make things happen at the top end of the pitch, I think that's important.

“He's a little bit down on fitness levels - that's normal - but the way he is with the ball, he's very good.”

Dawkins, who left the San Jose Earthquakes in February, had spells on loan with Leyton Orient, an earlier stint in the MLS with the Earthquakes, Aston Villa - where he was managed by Lambert - and Derby while a young player at White Hart Lane.

In January 2014 the Edgeware-born left-sided wideman was sold to Derby for £500,000 without having broken into the Spurs first team. "
The 19-times-capped Jamaica international moved back to the Earthquakes in January 2016.

Following his Earthquakes departure, Dawkins came close to joining Minnesota United and then spent time on trial with League One sides Charlton and Luton in the summer but wasn’t offered terms by either club.

Gerard Nash and Chris Hogg’s U23s go into today’s game top of the Professional Development Two South table with Bristol City in fifth. The game between the sides in the West Country ended 2-0 to the Blues.

U23s: Wright, Cotter, Clements, Ndaba, Marshall, McGavin, Nydam, McKendry, Dawkins, Morris, Folami. Subs: Ware, Drinan, Dobra, El Mizouni, Webber.

Really hope he can re create some of those clips for us. Can't get the PJ quote re J.E.T out of my head, world beater one minute and panel beater the next! Fingers crossed, worth a punt I reckon.

I watched Shrewsbury v Stoke City on Saturday. No Charlie Adam and Crouch on the bench. Saw Adam preseason v Walsall. Brilliant in front of the back four and the "go to" guy. Always available to help others out of trouble. Even at his age and if we could afford him he would be a huge asset to Town. Crouch came off the bench and did what Crouch does - became a "pest" to the Shrewsbury defence and scored! Not sure we could afford them but if we could.....

graham, you probably didn't hear Adam's aggy comments about PL's playing style in the summer- I don't imagine the two will want to meet again

More of the flotsam & jetsam which have drifted through Portman Road in recent years. Perhaps an unfit 31 year old could be our saviour but somehow I doubt it.

Is it true that Dawkins scored all four goals today?

4-2 with Morris and Folami in score sheet

Irony of our demise with first team is we have some of the most exciting young players in years across the pitch and a very good young coach and set up

For past 2 years only I put money into sponsoring the academy and glad the returns are there !!! If only we could find some senior players with same desire and passion and ABILITY !!! Well done to lads

Missed it lonely blue. I guess that's Charlie Adam out of the equation. Pound to a pinch of snuff Crouchie is a no goer too. Oh well, back to the drawing board!!
